Welcome to Girls Gone Streaking, a tutorial on using Nathaniel's Hair Salon by Luxe and Nyx. This is going to be long, but hopefully we can help you make some sense out of it, and give you some nice palettes to try as well!

Before we start, we need to give you a glossary of terms we will be using in this tutorial.
    GLOSSARY
  • base color: This is the color that will be most prominent on your avatar.
  • base low color: Think of this as your shading; it will always be darker than your base color. You can leave this black or you can tint this to a color that better compliments your base color. High contrasts work best.
  • base high color: If the base low is your shading, the base high is your highlighting. Try to keep this lighter than your base. This tone is more useful on some styles than others. Highlight #1 may also serve this purpose.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE. For the sake of this tutorial, ''highlights'' refer to the natural reflection of light on your hair. We use the term ''streaks'' to refer to the areas of color you can add to your hair.

So, now we can get started! I'm going to try a nice blonde for my first example. So far, I've just chosen my base color and made all my streaks match. At this point I'm not interested in laying down any special colors. I want to make sure the base looks nice first. This is usually where good hairstyles can go really bad.

Notice how the shading is rather gray? This is where the base high and base low are going to come in handy. I think I'm going to change my base low and base high to warmer tones, so it will look more natural.

Ah, that's better. The brown and pink really made a nice improvement. There's still a bit of gray and that's coming from our streaks. We should change them to something now. I might do some lowlights and go for a deep copper.

Voila! I think that is done! These techniques should work on any hairstyle, but obviously, palette colors may have to be rearranged to make a more pleasant arrangement on your avatar. Don't be afraid to color drop from photographs, wigs, NPCs, anything! Just like with dressing your avatar successfully, the key is balancing the color. If you choose pleasing color palettes and distribute the color evenly, you're sure to make winners every time!

Speaking of color palettes, here are a few that Nyx and I have found particularly successful!

Thank you, Luxe!

And hello, everyone!

I suppose you're here because you don't feel like spending hours at the Hair Salon with Nathaniel, agonizing over different shades and wondering why your hair looks like something a Spectrum pet might have regurgitated? Don't worry, I totally sympathize. You know how long it took me to get the hang of this? A good long while, that's how long, mostly just staring, slack-jawed, at the screen.
And there may have even been tears.

BUT, Luxe and I are hoping to spare you that agony, and hopefully get you a cool hairstyle in the process. Now, Luxe has already introduced you to how the Salon works, so I am going to show you some palettes that you can use! Before I do, though, I just want to point out a few things:

  • Not all hairstyles are compatible with all palettes. Though I have checked to make sure these palettes work for more than one hairstyle, they might not look right on the one you want. For the most part, this can be fixed by rearranging the streaks, but it's possible that some just won't look good no matter what you try.

  • Be careful with dark colors. As you look at some of the Black palettes below, you'll notice that the highlights and streaks are dark; barely even lighter than the black base. You don't want to go very light at all on dark hair like that, because it'll end up looking greasy. So, stick to the palette! It may not look light enough at first, but trust me, it is.

  • Write your hex codes down. I made a nice hairstyle the other day, but I didn't write the hex codes down and I deleted my avatar. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE. Even though the palettes will be here for your reference anytime, you may come up with your own cool hairstyle. If it's really cool, you could send it to us or post it here for other people to use, but don't let it get erased without writing it down!

Now, let's get to the hair!

Natural Styles

Streaks are a pretty cool new addition, wouldn't you agree? Now you can have black hair with neon streaks, or maybe a rich brown with blonde highlights. But, do you know you don't have to make your streaks contrasting colors? In fact, you can even make your streaks enhance your base color.

Here, I've got natural-colored palettes, using streaks that give the hair dimension.

Platinum Blonde -- Golden Blonde -- Strawberry Blonde

Black with Gray -- Black with Blue -- Black with Brown

Fiery Red -- Ginger -- Auburn

Brunette -- Eggplant -- Chestnut

That should cover all the real-world hair colors. Go make some pretty hair!

If you liked any of the base colors of these palettes and just wanted to change the streaks? Keep in mind that Highlight #1 isn't a streak, but the natural reflection of light on the hair. Only Highlights #2-6 should be changed if you want to keep the base.

Now, here's a couple of hairstyles I personally quite like.

Emerald -- Magenta -- Sapphire

Painted -- Borealis -- Confection

Streaks!

This is for using the streaks with black hair. If you find that there's too much color, change the Base Low to #00000. I put vibrant colors in the Base Low because I felt it helped the streaks blend a little better(this is especially true of styles where the streaks are a little sharp.)

Red -- Pink -- Orange and Yellow

Green -- Blue -- Purple

And with that, I'm going to turn this back over to Luxe!

I know the first thought I had when Nathaniel opened his salon was, ''I don't have to wear wigs all the time anymore!'' And it's true. If you love a certain wig's color, but you also like a hairstyle, you can imitate those colors in nearly any hair style you want! Below are some of my favorites.

NOTE: If you would like to use these palettes I highly recommend copying and pasting them directly into a program with an eyedropper tool, such as Photoshop. If you don't have one of these programs, I recommend a Firefox addon called ColorZilla. This gives you an eyedropper tool right in your browser window. You can get the hex code of anything on your screen! It's awesome.

Even if you only have MSPaint, you can still get the hex codes using the eyedropper tool in it and Draac's Color Converter. This will take the RGB values that MSPaint gives you and converts it to hex. Pretty neat, huh?

Thanks Andi and Nyx I really like the ginger and the eggplant :p

I have a tip if users want their hair to match their items perfectly, and have issues getting the color palettes to load. You'll need adobe or an eyedrop tool from any art program though xD

If you take a screenshot of the items that you want to use (or a screenshot of your HA wearing the items) you can select the base, shade, and highlight colors right off the items. Then just toss the hex numbers onto the palette... It should allow for perfect hair-wardrobe coordination

^ Really? I'm using opera (firefox broke the last time it updated itself without my permission DX!) =_= Which explains the lameness DX!

SO.. you guys are walking around the site with EYEDROPPERS? So if you see an item with colors you want, out comes the eyedropper and BAM! There's the hex code?! ! Unfair Advantage -lul- xD

Well, I still prefer using Photoshop to get my colors since I'm saving these palettes too, but yes, technically, one could be doing that. XD

lol thanks I was having a hard time understanding what the Base High was for, because I couldn't see a difference when varying the base high color o.o

This is more technical but I have to ask For the Highlights Streaks, to add color to different zones of the hair, does it overlay 5 different images corresponding to each of the Streaks? I think Keith mentioned something like that a while back but I can't remember properly o_O

ColorZilla is AMASING for this. Get it if you can.

Thanks for the guide ladies. It really helps achieve the more natural look...
Any chance of getting one that shows how to do contrasting streaks? Like say, dark black hair with hot pink streaks?

I think Jill still wants to add some of her favorite palettes, and if it doesn't make it too image intensive, I'd love to do some heavily contrasted combinations.

I think eventually, I'd love to take requests for palettes in this thread, even if they don't end up in the first few posts. It would be fun and really good practice. It will also help me to see this feature's weak areas so we can tweak it before it comes out of beta testing.

Request palettes - Considering the amazing ones you've already done I can't wait to see this option for the thread - I've already started playing with the platinum blonde palette you've layed out. Thanks again and great job.

One thing I've noticed with the salon is that Base High Color is only needed for certain hairstyles. It only shows up on:
Droop

Feather

Flash

Flirt

Fluff

All the others ones show no change when I have all colors set to white, and Base High to bright red.

EDIT: For example, this is Braids, Semblance, and Pixie, with all colors white, and Base High at the same bright red:

This is something we're still debating whether or not we will fix. But thank you for making clear screenshots of it, lurk. I'll make sure to show this to the artists so that we can try to make all hair work the same.

Wow! Thanks for the help . A really well written and helpful guide. You might want to add something about matching unusually coloured items e.g. The deep pink rose bouquet. Use colourzilla to pick the two main colours and match with the streaks. I matched it bouquet like that yesterday and it turned out pretty well .
edit: I'm definately going to use that gorgeous platinum blonde sometimes :O.

Copy/pasting our palettes into a program like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or even free ones like GIMP, openCanvas, or SAI would allow you to get the hex codes with an eyedropper tool. I may also add a note to one of the posts about ColorZilla, which makes it so you don't even need an external program. There are plenty of ways to achieve these results without us listing the six-digit hex code as well. You're not on your own.

Thanks for taking the time to make this guide - it must have taken quite a while to get it so clear and concise. I wish I'd found it before I spent the better part of an hour working on my own 'do'

I'll add a thumbs up for ColorZilla too but for those users without Firefox, they can download an eyedropper tool. It's freeware and can be found here
