It all depends on the artist actually, well depends on the artist, the type of art, ect.
Most artists will ask you pay them in sP (they will have a junk item in trades or their shop you'll end up purchasing after they finish, or before they start the piece you've requested)
OR they will ask for items, which will result in a junk trade being set up, you paying using those items when or before the piece is started or finished.
Then there's paying with real money... you'd have to use paypal for that and I'm not familiar with that so someone else might have to explain.
