"What manner of man is this
that even the wind and the
sea
obey him?"

Is it color scheme and matching? Distribution of the different colors? Or the items used?

In your opinion, what do you consider a good avatar?

For me, it's color distribution and matching, and it helps if the color scheme is a little out there but done well, or if something really pops out at me.

I like ones that are unconventional.
Like using strange items, or items in new ways.

As long as it's unique, and the person who made it likes it, I'd consider it a good avatar. XD.

I like HAs that use under-used items.

And the color distribution. Yep yep.

I like HAs that use unusual colors and items, or use them in a cool and different way. |D
But if the person that made it likes it then that's all that really matters lol.

I like HA that use both limitedly used items and unusual colours schemes. Plus the distribution of colours helps HA out a lot to.

I love avatars that use a variety of items to make someone no one else could have thought of. Layering is what really makes a person's avatar original. You can't just slap items on and expect it to look good.

A good avatar to me consists of creative layering and the flow/matching of colors. =]

Distribution of colors and color schemes is most important imo. Color matching is also helpful, but that doesn't matter as much to me.
Good use of patterns, however, is awesome. Giant chunks of color just aren't my stlye :C

I say layering is a great element. Color too. But it's more how you see your avatar, and if you like your avatar.

I love unconventional avatars, some of my all-time favorite avatars have actually been vanishing cream avatars Whoever can use that item without doing something cliche is a god in my book.
I also like creative layering and color schemes.

I like nicely layered, quite simple or unique HAs.
A good colour scheme always helps, but some I like are quite random, like @Peach s HAs.

I don't like HAs that has too much clutter, or backdrops.
I really dislike backdrops.

I like bright colors, backgrounds and skirts...I also like layering up, especially on the hair. I also despise using an entire set. I may use one or two items from a set but never all of them. To me, that's just no very unusual/unique

I think colors. After all, you see them first, then you focus on the layering and such.

balance.

size, shapes, colors, color distribution

whatever, so long as things are in balance your avatar is perfect.

Creativity.
I prefer HAs that make great use of unconventional items, even if they aren't perfectly colour matched or distributed. I love themed avatars too

Matching a color distribution are big and can make awesome avies.
but...
I really like casual avies that looks like an actual outfit, even if they aren't perfectly matched. As long as they don't have like something earth toned with a random neon blue shorts.

I think color distribution is great to focus on, but it's not everything. Think up a theme and run with it, if you limit yourself to 'fashion' you're not having near as much fun as you could with your ha.

I like combining and layering best but matching and color distribution are in close second. If a person uses an odd color well then that gives them brownie points, in my opinion. I also love using a lot of items, sometimes a few is good enough, but the majority of the time my HA's have a lot of clothing. xP

Erm... personally I think color distribution and layering are quite important in making a good avatar.
I also like it if avatar's have a general 'theme'. (But I'm being a hypocrite xD This doesn't apply most of the time as I have made avvies that consisted of random items put together)
As long as the person if happy with their avatar it's all good =)

Fist of all - correct layering of items. No eyeliner over hair or boots sticking out behind your pants

Then, the style of your avatar and items that go together. You wouldn't use the archduke jabot with something like citrus charms bubblegum leg warmers.

Then colors. What Drayk said. Even if they are balanced and matched and whatever it will look bad if the colors just don't go together. That being said, perfect color balance is not always an imperative. I didn't even match the yellow on mine A lot of avatars I've seen have some items thrown on them just to match, and would look better without them. And some that are unmatched look great, too.

I guess what's important to me is what the avatar looks as a whole and has that little something that just pops.

Edit:
damn I didn't intend to write a novel o.O

besides some of the more obvious things (correct layering, color distribution) I like HAs that really look unique...
what I mean is, if you look at a HA, you wouldn't be able to say, "oh, anyone could have made that." I like ones that really are unique to a person, I mean. like... it's THEIR style.
just because a HA is made "well" doesn't mean it's good...

I actually don't care if the items used are seen very much or not. usually they're not used for a reason, lol.
I do like when people use items that are "over-used" in a new and exciting way.

As long as a HA is layered well, I consider it good. =] I'm not that picky, but then again, I'm not as into fashion. If it looks pretty or creative, then I like it.

all of the above, plus a little wow factor thrown in for good measure...it doesn't matter to me whether it's a fantasy based HA or one based off RL fashion trends, as long as it makes me stop in my tracks and give it a second look...to me a good avatar is one that looks as though someone has actually put some thought and effort into its creation instead of simply grabbing any old item from their wardrobe and throwing it on a base...

Color scheme and matching along with distribution seem to be eyecatchers for me.

Also the style of what the HA is tying to pull off and if it looks good or not.

Basically what Maja saaaid

I don't match with a lot of my HAs.
It's just not how I roll, I do what I like and I like what I do.
But it's got to look decent now. A though a perfect HA to you is definitely different from someone else, so while you're thinkin it's awesome they're like "lol, wtf no"
so yeah. aha.

I like really busy HAs. You can probably tell! I think it has to show a persons artistic flair, and the colours have to work. I like themed HAs too.

I like having lots of color, but nothing too blinding. For me, matching doesn't matter as long as the colors work but personally i like to match colors. Layering and creativity are nice too c:

Hmm, color for one. But I don't think it has to be perfectly matched. Sometimes a color scheme can be effective as well. And form - I like a nice, sleek form. There are, however, a few accessories that are 'off-balance' that I really like. But aside from maybe one occasional unbalanced clothing article or accessory, I like to see a clean form. I hatehatehate when you can see the edge of the shoes behind the leg of the pants, so layering is important. And if it doesn't layer cleanly, I don't wear it. Sheer layering can look amazing, but it can be horribly abused as well. Practice makes perfect XD
