Soooo, I thought I would post this since I realize that college is starting left in right. I figure we need a college slacker thread. Maybe to encourage each other to get some homework and studying done. Or even just to take a much needed break from the craziness that is college life!

Started classes last week. At this point in time, I need to read a chapter in A&P and 3 chapters for my Tech writing class. And I have to make an outline for my first paper in Tech writing. I also have a homework assignment in my Human Sexuality class, but it's not due until next week, so I'm not too worried about it.

I'm a first year student, starting up on September 8th. I'm terrified actually, haha. Back in high school, good grades were just too easy for me. Everything was done the night before and I'd pull off an easy 90%, and it's taught me horrible study habits. Not only that, but I'm pretty bad for procrastinating so I need to get my ass in gear for university.

The only thing I have ready for school is my laptop. I don't know where my classes are yet, I don't have my books, or any school supplies (binders, pens, whatever). I'd also love to get a hair cut and some new clothes right before school starts, but I'm jobless right now.

To all of those who have gone into university before- what supplies did you guys bring to class? I'm really unsure if I should be loading up with binders, notebooks, laptop, etc. Any help would be super appreciated. What about a backpack? I never had one for high school, but since I'm going to be carrying around so many things, I think a backpack would help.
If it's any help, I'm taking five classes and have quite a lot of books to carry around.

I got your back Jack, doges be crazy.

@SING - I'm not exactly sure how your college is or how the load for your major is...
My tip to you though is - don't buy anything until you hear exactly what your professors want you to have.
Basically, don't carry an office around with you. :p Carry only what you need.

As for myself I carry only one notebook that I use for all of my classes. Sometimes it's a one subject notebook, if I have more lecture classes in a semester I get a 3-5 subject one. And as for a bag, I have been using large purse/bags for all my things (they are magical holes to an alternative dimension that hold everything for me).
BUT, you have a ton of books, and if you don't have a way to drop off and pick up some during the day, go with a backpack.
I only use one folder for papers, but if you prefer to organize more, get a folder for each subject.
Pens, pencils (and a little sharpener for those pencils just in case).

--

Tomorrow I am starting my senior year, I'm a graphic design major going for a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
And, the first time that I will taking classes and also working. The procrastination can get ugly under these new conditions! XD

@SING
Are you going to a community college or university?
I am in a community college right now (as it's the closest school that has my classes I need for my vet tech degree.) and on the first day, I carried one notebook for all of my classes and just wrote down what was needed for each class.
I would suggest getting a backpack. I got one not long after my semester started because it was soooo much easier than carrying around my books. (and cause I'm lazy.)

On the other hand, I should be studying for my Cells, Tissues, and Organs quiz tomorrow. First quiz of the semester and I'm already procrastinating. 8D All of my classes are online (I'm taking three tech classes.), so I study/do my work when I can/feel like it. I am not too worried about it yet. I think I remember a lot of the information from my Biology/Anatomy classes in high school and my Biology class in college.

I told myself I'd take a year off before going to college/university after finishing high school...

Yeah, I graduated 5 years ago. =/

Had I actually GONE to college/university, either right after HS or a year later like I said I would, I'd be done by now.

But nope, I'm still working for minimum wage.

I'm going to university (not community college) and I'm majoring in psychology. Thanks though guys, I think I'm going to settle for a notebook instead of a binder. Easier to carry around, haha. I've been looking into backpacks, and they're all so freaking expensive. One with a nice laptop compartment is like 70 dollars. Boo.

I got a very nice under armor backpack for a good price last year right around when school started. I think I got it at Academy/Hibbetts Sporting Goods store. I forget which one, but it's definitely the best one I've ever bought. Maybe you might want to look into getting one of those. This one didn't tear or rip like my others.

I started two weeks ago at the community college, and last week at the university.

I haven't done any of my homework yet. love music theory. lol

But I'll probably start the Latin American Music homework today. It's due tomorrow night, and I was out of town almost all weekend. I don't even know if I'll still be in this class. I have a class conflict with the ensemble I auditioned for and I'm 150% sure I made it in. (only 2 bassoons auditioned, and he tends to take two bassoons. So I made it. I don't even have to look at the chair placement list. I just... know. XD )

Part of my problem is I have to get up insanely early just to get a parking spot at the community college. at around 6:30 it gets crazy. Thankfully it's not so bad after next week. Did I mention that this class meets at 9:30? loveing ridiculous. Luckily it's just one class. But still. It takes forever to get out of there. Holy crap.

Peace. Love. Avenged Sevenfold.

I need to stop sleeping in for class! I have used up all my "sick" days for laboratory attendance already for this semester and it's only 4th week in! Not that this is new, I did the same thing last semester, the one before that, the one before... I was actually sick the past few weeks, though, but maaaan I am going to be screwed if I come down with anything again!

Epidemiology and Public Health Microbio tomorrow at 9. Need to catch up on this subject, the co-ordinator is naaasty with his selection on what goes into the quizzes.

@SING, regarding laptops... everyone studies differently, but personally, I'm not one to take my laptop unless I have a huge break where I will really use it, and even then I am prone to just popping onto a uni computers (slow and crap though they may be!)

Paper and pen is MUCH more effective for taking notes, and getting information to sink in- there have been studies that prove people are more effective with paper-pen than a laptop. Of course, as I said, everyone has a different method, but play with your options. If you don't need to be carrying around expensive, heavy, fragile machinery... don't bother!

Reading this thread is making me feel like a good student.
I'm always on time for class and I'm doing my homework everyday.
Seriously, I've learned not to love it up. The hard way. DON'T GET BEHIND.
if you do, you're done for.

It'll get more difficult for me once team practice starts. And work.
Right now my only responsibility, other than my classes, is to go muck out my horse's stall in the evening. And the barn is on campus here.
Easy enough.

buuuut.
I should actually be tackling my astronomy reading right now.
I just did most of my French and needed a break.

A sporting goods store, I honestly wouldn't have ever thought of that. So smart. I've looked around at like Staples, Wal Mart, etc, and I feel that every bag is either super expensive or super crap quality. I'll take a look at some in my area, even though I honestly have no idea where some are. Thanks though!

@temporaryplaceholder
I'm really unsure what I'm going to do with my laptop. All my friends are just going into university this year too and pretty much the only thing anyone is bringing is a laptop. I think I may have a major problem with slacking off if I have it with me- the temptation will always be there. Haha. I think I'm just going to bring it along for the first few weeks and see if it's something I really am going to use for every class. A big problem with writing things for me is that I have really bad penmanship. We'll see though.

@FILM
Don't worry about if you have no idea what to do, because a lot of high school seniors have no idea. Thankfully during senior year, a lot of universities come and do presentations at high schools (may be different where you're at, but I see no reason why). A lot of school counsellors are willing to help, but they can only do too much. Are you wanting to move out of your home? Because I looked at the local school (where thankfully I ended up going) before anything else. If you have a general idea on what you want to study, look into that program at different schools. I did a lot of online research on schools that I could potentially go to. It's a little overwhelming, so maybe keep a list of schools you like and why. Make sure you do research on living costs if it's places that are far away from home. If possible, make an appointment to go to the school and talk to a counsellor there.

My biggest advice to you is not to panic! Senior year is great, and sadly I know a lot of people who wasted it because they were too worried about how they didn't know what to do after grad.

I got your back Jack, doges be crazy.

@FILM, if you have no idea what to do, make sure your high school electives are broadly applicable to the areas you're looking at! I made the mistake of thinking "meh, maths... I'll take the easy one." Or "meh, science. I'll take bio and ignore chem and physics."

Then I find myself looking into computer science (high maths), nanotechnology (high maths/physics) and ultimately dropping to biomedical science (high chemistry.) I'm happy with my choice now, and catching up with the chemistry... wouldn't change back for the world, but things would have been easier if I paid a bit more attention to the "pre-requisite" knowledge instead of being such a lazy ass in high school.

As for actually picking something after high school, if you're still not sure, look for flexible degree options. For example, at my uni, people can go into science without picking a major, and then they only have to specialise into what they like the best after second year (environmental, medical, forensics, etc.) That way you get to head yourself into a broad direction, and really see what the kind of things your course demand before you finally pick what you want to do.

So I started classes today! Well, only one of them, the others are on other days. Anyway, my sociology professor looks awesome, she's really upbeat, lol. After a long boring summer, I'm glad I finally have something to do already (homework, yeah). Also waiting for an answer back to my work-study application, here's hoping I get the job.

@SING If it helps at all: my laptop has helped me tremendously in college. I can type crap on my laptop then I save stuff on my flash drive and go to the campus computer labs to print it out. I don't bring it with me very often to class though, I just find it easier to do/type essays and other work on my own machine rather than going to the labs to do so. Plus I also usually have at least one online course or lots of stuff to do online required by my professors.

I don't start university till the 4th October, and that's just Freshers Week - I don't start learning until the 11th.

I'm going to have so much work though. I never did anything for college and somehow got away with it, I don't think that will work for uni. I'll probably have to actually do the work set before me, or God forbid...revise. D;

So in my first day of biology 1010, my professor didn't show up because he was sick, so some other lady came in to tell us what we needed and blah blah blah. There is a second and third edition of the book needed. She told my class to get the third edition because, "IT IS JUST SO MUCH DIFFERENT AND BETTER THAN THE SECOND EDITION." Being that it was too late for me to return the second edition for full used price, and I would have had to buy the third edition new, I just figured that I could just borrow my roommate's book. I went to class today and lo and behold the professor was there. He went in front of the class and told us that we would be wasting our money if we bought the third edition. Almost everyone had already bought the third edition, so I quietly exclaimed, "lol sucks for you guys!"

THOSE BLASTED TEXTBOOK EDITIONS, FFFFFFF.
Thank goodness I got all the correct books this semester. And I was freaking out too, because at the bookstore there was a new girl working there and she looked a bit confused when she was looking for my books. xD I was worried that she might have gotten the wrong ones, being new and all. @Eros
I knew what books to get because there is a link that leads me to the book list whenever I print out a schedule. P:The list said that the second edition would be an acceptable substitution for the third edition, and it's $80 cheaper.
