"This world was never about truth and lies, there are only hard facts. Despite that, everyone who exists in this world mistakenly believes that only facts that are favorable to them are truths."

I watched an episode of bleach and this quote came out of there. To me this seems to be true in my opinion, but what do you guys think of it? True or not?

it is a fact that i will die one day.
this fact is not favorable to me.
does that make it a non-truth?

It's a new dawn It's a new day It's a new life

@shatzy
I don't think the statement was quite meant as an absolute truth or rule; more as a philosophical comment on human tendency.

It's commonplace for people to deny fact if it challenges their beliefs, or makes them uncomfortable, even if those facts are...just that. Raw truth.

When my grandfather was dying of dementia, no one disputed the fact that the illness was terminal; that he was dying. However, even though he was not at fault for his actions, or the "crazy" things he would say or belief, my grandmother refused to accept that he wasn't in control. She would scream at him and tantrum any time he said something "incorrect". She refused to believe, despite accepting the existence of his illness, that he was slipping like he was. It made her uncomfortable; it meant she'd be alone, and would have to take care of herself.
It didn't change the fact that it was true--but denying it gave her fleeting comfort until after the fact.

@Ayeaka

i get the internal point of the question. i'm just attempting to dispel it's blanketed validity. if we want to take the quote and take from it our own meaning (like most mythical texts), then what is there to really debate?

Aizen was talking about the shinigami, the elite of the world, only wanting to believe truths because without doing so, they would go crazy. He went on to say that the commoners generally only believe facts that are against them.

I think it's fair to say that a lot of people typically don't believe when things are too perfect, which is where the expression "too good to be true" came from. Nevertheless, we all usually do experience incredible luck and maybe things bordering on miracles at least once in our lives.

I wouldn't take anime philosophies so seriously, mainly since the people who write the lines are professional writers and typically not professional philosophers.

Well, anime isn't exactly the best place to get an inspirational quote from. I just can't take a quote seriously if it's from anime, because the whole principle behind it is to try and be as seriously epic and epically serious as possible while being completely ridiculous at the same time.

I'm with shatzy. I know that people have the tendency to want to believe things they enjoy more than things they don't, but most people are reasonable and logical and don't blatantly ignore facts that cannot be dispelled. There's a lot of things I don't like in the world, but I know they're true and therefore I have to accept they're fact. Santa doesn't leave me presents under the Christmas tree, my dog Charlie is never coming back, this grapple really doesn't taste like a grape apple, etc.

Fair enough.
Though, I suppose that's where the importance of defining the specific limits of what one means in a debate comes in.

We could debate "equality" for instance, though that's rather vague and broad. If we specified "equality as described by Kant," however, it's easier to have a specific debate.

That is why I defined my particular understanding of what was said--though, it would help if they defined what they meant beyond simply quoting the anime, and...true to what others have said, anime isn't exactly the best place for inspirational quotes, haha.

Richard Rorty is a famous philosopher who tackled this issue; what is truth? is there an absolute truth, or is truth only what is most useful to human beings? Rorty argued that it was useless to try to find any absolute truth, but advocated a certain pragmatism in the sense that what we can use to further ourselves as a human race is the truth.

It could be, but is it?
In my opinion, there is no such things of what we believe.
Our eyes and mind are deceiving, because of all of the other people's thoughts.

@shatzy
It just means that the things that we believe don't actually exists, but it's merely a puzzle.

@LionMaster

if the things we believe don't really exist, how can we possibly communicate about anything?

Maybe nothing is right.
Maybe humans just created an illusion to themselves that make them think there is right and wrong.
Who knows?
Maybe there isn't any.
