@darg It is definitely terrific at times, but also definitely not-so-terrific at times, aha. This is my fourth year of studying Chinese, but my school has both regular and international departments. I was in the International department for the first three months, then was switched to regular, though no one can understand what's going on really now haha our Chinese isn't good enough.

I only reached a communicative level in English after 6 or 7 years of learning - and now after 10 years I'm still no good

Haha I can use English here a lot though. I'm good enough at Chinese to communicate my basic needs, but I can't really have a normal conversation with anyone.
And hey, I couldn't tell English wasn't your first language, so that's good, right? (:
