A girl's body is NOT ready for childbirth at that early an age. They're lucky to have survived labor and delivery without any complications, both the young mothers and their children. Hooooly crap. I just.... IDK. |

 But... but they are still children at 11, 12, 13!!! Some preteens don't even develop breasts that early! Some haven't even started their period(obviously these girls did though)... And even if they have begun to develop, they certainly aren't anywhere close to fully developed at that age nor are they through growing. I think it is really a failing of evolution that we hit puberty before our brains fully develop. I think it would be nice if girls couldn't get pregnant until about age 18. And also that it was harder to conceive, but easier to give birth, like Alan Davies said on QI. And for my third wish I'd like the power of flight please. Also, I'm kind of disturbed with all the comments saying "we have no right to judge because it's their culture." Human rights span cultures. crap like stoning women in the street isn't okay just because it's done halfway across the world. I'm an anthro major and they have specifically told us in classes that intervention is always justified, and even necessary, when human rights are at stake. Last Edit by:

She had to have been pregnant before she got married or had a pre-term baby because she had the baby just 6 months after marriage so I'm going to assume she had been having sex for a while now. I also wish that we didn't hit puberty before our brains are fully developed, but that wouldn't stop children from having sex. They would do it either way, happy they couldn't get pregnant. I know a male child who engaged in sexual acts with a female child long before he hit puberty. In this case, I blame the mother. Had she really wanted a different life for her daughter as she claims, she would have found a way to make that happen. At age 11, for the most part, children don't seem to think differently from what they've been told because they haven't had a chance to experience life. She saw what was going on in her life and followed what she believed to be proper.

@Hermes You can't stop female castration. Imagine what their society thinks of it, a female who has not gone through the process will probably never find a husband and is considered a loose woman in their society. If you were a girls mother would you do the same procedure? You can't stop these things, so why not give them the tools and sanitary conditions to do it right? Pigheadedness in thinking that you're always right and these things are not okay is NOT the way to go about things. Maybe you should study a little Anthropology and Culture before you try to force yours on someone else and tell them what to do.

I think the words "planned, willing, and wanted childbirth" are maybe a little touchy here. At age 11, I don't think the girl had a full grasp of what it would mean to get pregnant and have a child. Brain development has to be considered as well, because 11-year-olds think very differently from teenagers and adults. The frontal cortex, which deals with decision-making, isn't even fully developed until about age 22, I think. (sorry if you already knew all this, just stuck it in to back up my statement). We also don't know if she had been previously sexually abused by family members or other older men, which is a cynical assumption to make but sadly does seem to happen a lot in cultures which marry girls off at young ages ... if she had, it could have affected her decision to have children so early. Another problem with her having children so young is that while her body was technically ready because she had started puberty, it wasn't developed enough to make childbirth safe for either her or the baby, and her baby was most likely premature or at a dangerously low birth rate. It's lucky they didn't both die of complications; having children that young just isn't safe. I don't want to start a flat-out fight because I think the way you worded your argument was very eloquent and tactful, but I do think that 11-year-olds getting pregnant is a valid thing to be worried about, as is castration. |

@Hermes Ok first, they're not doing it -just because-. Female castration was invented to prevent their girls from sleeping around, and it also prevents attack as well. If you want to call a practice bullcrap then do some research on it first. They're not treating their daughters like trash. Also, I'm not saying that what they're doing is right. I'm saying that forcing them to stop is not right. Second, why can't culture be an excuse? Culture is who we are. Culture is what makes us human beings. Understand it, THEN talk crap about it. You really think that people haven't been trying to get them to stop? If you don't care about learning about them then why the hell should they care about what you think?
