Oh my god, that was absolutely nuts!

I honestly don't think the police were in the wrong.
Like, if a kid came at me with a sharpened stick and crap, i'd pepper spray them. haha.

Pepper spray can be really painful and it really sucks if you breath it in.

I wouldn't have pepper sprayed an eight year old o.0 that seems like a kitty move to me.
Police have bullet proof vests, training, and more power than a second grader.
IMO - it was excessive.

On another note, WTF is wrong with that poor kid? =(

I think pepper spray was a good idea, honestly. Would the mother have preferred they tackled him to the ground? XD
And the kid is seriously psycho if he's dropping the F-Bomb and fashioning a deadly weapon and planning to stab his teachers with it o___o

The police would have likely received just as much criticism if they had laid a finger on the boy. For those very reasons you stated actually.

I want to know how bad of a temper tantrum this kid was throwing that the teachers were actually so scared that they were barricading themselves and calling police.

I found another article on it here and this quotation sums it up for me:

Quote:
The biggest problem here isn't Aidan, but the teachers. They're so pathetically weak that even kids don't respect them. Lacking the spine to handle their own jobs, they resort to calling in the armed (and routinely violent) police, who pepper-sprayed a small, 80-pound child because like, you know, they might get a splinter from the kid's stick.

Although I would also say I think lack of discipline at home is probably playing a factor as well.

Well my Dad is a police officer and when he has had to deal with unruly children he just bear hugs 'em.
It pins their arms down so all they can really do is kick him which isn't a big deal.
Police are always called out for how they handle situations, but I think that was a pretty stupid decision.

I don't think pepper spray is a great idea where children are concerned, but I honestly don't know what else they could have done because the kid had a weapon.

Lol at calling it a "great choice".

You can stand behind your staff (though I question if I would in that situation, but I wasn't there, maybe that stick was really, really sharp /sarc) without cheering them on for having an eight-year-old arrested.

Woah. Crazy kid. I feel bad for him though, because Im sure there is something go on that is making him act that way!
I think they could have used something else to try and subdue...there was no need for pepper spray. Second graders are like....50-60 pounds. I think a group of cops could overpower him without using pepper spray.

I am sort of neutral on both sides of this story.

My nephew has ADHD and is bipolar and was a HANDFUL. Even at 2 years old. He was frightening. (he later burned down a house and killed a dog, mind you..) I agree that the pepper spray was a 'cop out' and shouldn't have been used on a small child, but if you are a grown man, and the kid has a stick, bear hug the little loveer. You wear gloves, have vests on.. You won't get hurt. Maybe a splinter.

If the teachers were so scared of the kid, I don't blame them. There are kids out there who think deadly force is the way to go. You can train, raise, whatever, them the way you want, it's a chemical imbalance in their brain. They will do what they need to do.

Obviously, this kid felt "Whacking them" was a good idea.

Oh, that's terrible! And if I was attacked and had no pepper spray at all, I'd use some graound pepper instead. It's more eco-friendly.

Well, seriously, I guess the policeman was right to pepper spray the child, because he was about to do something really, really bad and that could send him to Hell when he dies. Some people may say it's abusive, but not if the child, despite being so small, is so bloody dangerous.

OTOH, I guess it reminds me of my childhood. My difficult, traumatic childhood. I've got Asperger's syndrome, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and when I was a child, I was really terrible. Thank God, I've changed a lot thanks to my parents and the psycholigists who treated me. Still, I sometimes suffer a chemical imbalance in my brain and am unable to control myself.

I saw this on the Today show and think the mom needs to be tasered. She was all yeah my child has special needs and has anger issues and should have been treated differently. blah blah rhetoric. It seemed to me that the mom does not want to take any responsibility for her childs actions. Although with a name like Aiden, that probably speaks loads about the mother in itself.

Oh and they asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up and was like A MARINE. and I LOL'D at that.

I teach in schools where kids have histories of violent outbursts like this. I'm surprised they had to call the police, however according to the code of conduct in my district, it clearly states if there is an active threat to teachers and other students (as this child obviously was) then the appropriate measures must be taken, even if it's the police.

They did what they had to do. I am quiet; I am strong.

Wow, that kid has some problems. :/
Honestly I don't think that what the police did was that wrong. If they'd used a different kind of physical force, they'd likely be called out on it just as bad. =/ And the kid obviously doesn't get much discipline at home -- maybe he'll at least learn from this...

I feel bad for the teachers. They can't discipline the kid even when he apparently wants to kill them... Wtf.

imo, the mom would've said it was excessive no matter what they did. I'm sure even if they managed to walk up and take the stick away, she would've been upset.

The police were going to get doged at no matter what choice they made. If they had manhandled the weapon away from the kid(who clearly intended to do bodily harm to anyone who got in his way) there would have been outrage, if they let the kid hurt somebody there would have been outrage, if they locked the kid in the room alone until he calmed down there would have been outrage.

In fact using physical force on an eight year old would probably resulted in MORE damage and outcry than the pepper spray. It's not like dog piling on him would tickle.

It was a no win situation for them, and I think the pepper spray was a perfectly acceptable way to get the kid neutralized without doing permanent harm or letting him rampage and destroy property until he decided to calm down.

To be honest, the kid is probably going to grow up to get pepper sprayed repeatedly in the future with the way he's acting. Might as well get used to it now. :/

Quote:

The boy's mother, Mandy, whose last name was not reported, said police used excessive force on her son. "I'm sure what he was doing wasn't right, but he's eight years old," she said. "They walked in, asked him to drop the stick, and then sprayed him with the spray... I think it's excessive."

dog, if he's already threatening police and calling them loveers at eight years old, you really need to reevaluate the way you raise your child not complain about the people who stop him from hurting himself or others.

I don't think what the police did was excessive. Were there other options? Yes, but I don't find the action the police took to be excessive.

Woaaah yeah... Pretty much what @RedSekhmet said (I usually find myself agreeing with you quite often). Pepper spray was not a freaking tazer, and it wasn't ripping the wood out of the boys hands and tackling him or anything. Seriously, if he really doesn't have a mental illness that's even worse! That must be some pretty crappy parenting if your kid thinks he can get away with that.

...Even if your mind has forgotten.

Unless any of the adults were vampires I don't see why they had to spray him when he had a sharp stick xD. But, yes it was wrong of the kid AND the adults.

edit:

I think it could of been handled in more of a mature matter. Police have guns and the kid has a stick. Just take it away from him.

All this. I completely agree with User not found (1): shinedown.

I wonder if the use for pepper spray has become a fad now for policemen (maybe the not-so-train ones) D;
The policemen men in my high school has used it to break up fights soo many times... They were using such powerful pepper spray too. The whole stank with it Innocent bystanders would get pepper spray too.. and not to mention the food also got a taste of it..

From what I could tell that kid has some real behavioural problems. Trying to stab someone at eight IS NOT normal.

My question to those that think this was a poor choice: What if the kid was ten and threatening to stab people? Twelve? Fourteen? When is it 'okay' to pepper spray someone? How old does someone have to be for it to be 'okay' to be pepper sprayed?

Sounds like Oppositional Defiant Disorder, my cousins (all siblings) have been diagnosed with that.
The oldest of my cousins from that family was kicked out of every daycare program and had thrown a computer chair at a daycare provider when she was 4. I believe it was the same year that she locked her mom out of the house, threw away her moms cellphone and then hid the rest of the house phones and keys.
Kids be crazy these days lol.

I don't know the circumstances, but I'm siding with no one.

No one knows how dangerous this kid was unless they were actually there.
Maybe the wood was really sharp and they couldn't get near him and had to resort to long range. Maybe the police were being unnecessarily violent. Who knows?

If the kid's going after his teachers with the intent to stab them, then it's about time to get him looked at.
Especially if the cops had to spray the kid in the face twice to get it away. o=o When the cops tell you to drop something, you drop it no matter how mad you are, regardless of how old you are.
I just hope that they find out what's making him this angry as a kid and nip it in the bud before he gets older. Imagine the damage he could potentially do if they don't find out why he resorted to violence like that and work on helping him cope with it now that he's subdued and in custody.

Vests don't cover the arms/legs. You can die of blood loss from a blow to either of these, especially if you're getting in close to hug a kid trying to stab you.

^Exactly this. And if I had called cops loveers when I was 8 years old, my parents would have made it so I would never be able to sit down again after I apologized to the entire police department.

On a side note, this totally made me think of the Monty Python skit. "What if he comes at you with a pointed stick?"

On one hand I think the pepper spray was a good idea, but on the other hand I feel like perhaps they should've kept talking to him and tried to calm him down first. But none of us know the full story because we weren't there, so I can't really give a definite answer. Maybe they did try to calm him down.

From what I do know of the situation, if I had been trying to calm him down and it wasn't working I'd definitely use pepper spray or a taser. They both hurt, but it's pretty unlikely that he would die from it. I wouldn't go after a kid that had a foot-long, sharpened stick. I mean a billion different injuries could happen. All in all, I'd go with a taser since some people can be allergic to pepper spray or get chemical burns.

I honestly think that they made the right choice. What else COULD they do? Shoot the kid? Tase him? Try to tackle him and possible injure him or break the kid's bones?

They reacted according to their training; they were threatened, so they reacted in the appropriate manner.

I bet this kid would benefit more from homeschooling than a school for trouble-causing children, at least until he becomes mature enough to deal with uncomfortable feelings in public. Unfortunately, schools are really just glorified day cares here, and the majority of parents are both working all the time just to barely sustain their family and would probably be unable to devote enough time to it.
