I consider myself atheist, but my boyfriend says that I am not. I would just like to know your opinions.

I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD. PERIOD.
I do however, believe that something does happen after death, it just isn't heaven or hell.

Those are the main points I suppose, if you want more info, just ask!
PING PLEASE!

Atheism is when you don't believe in any deities, it's got nothing to do with your views on what happens after you die. So your boyfriend is, uh... wrong, I guess. xD

Honestly, there are some atheistic religions, such as Buddhism (although not all Buddhists are atheists). XD

Atheism is just not believing in any deities, just as theism is believing in deities.

Religion is a personal thing. You don't have to conform to any standard, mainstream religion. People can't tell you what religion you are. Only you can decide what feels right. At the most, someone may be able to suggest that you have views that are similar to a certain religion, but they can't tell you 'YOU ARE ____'.

Don't feel pressure to 'be' a certain religion. Just believe what you do and let others scramble around with their own lives.

@Magic, I absolutely disagree with everything you have said.

What religion one is, is not defined by what they "feel" like. It is defined by the fundamental beliefs of that religion, and as such, anyone can tell you what religion you are. If one believes in a god but "feels" like an atheist, that feeling is basically irrelevant. If one say, believes in the forgiveness of Christ from a punishment in hell, that makes them a variant of Christianity. It is completely untrue that people cannot identify and explain that and that this person "feeling" like a hindu makes them actually a hindu.

It's not about "conforming to a standard" but more about finding a label for a standard you already have, ie, you wither fit the mold or you don't.

It is quite clear that OP has her beliefs quite sorted and set in stone already, and is not trying to "conform" them to "mainstream", but rather, just describe and define them using common terminology. As such, GalaxiesCollide is an atheist, because she a without (a) belief in gods (theist) and her afterlife ideas are too ambiguous to define at this stage.

This is terribly narrow-minded. I'm not even sure I wish to debate with someone who feels that they HAVE to be a certain religion because someone tells them. Okay, so, I don't believe in murdering people for the fun of it. Does that make me a Catholic, because one of their Commandments is 'Thou shalt not kill'? No, it doesn't. Well, I also don't steal and commit adultery, which is also against the Catholic religion. So...I must be one of them now, right? WRONG. Just because I coincidentally 'follow' (I use that term loosely) a few rules/commandments of any religion, or even believe in some of their teachings DOES NOT MAKE ME X RELIGION. In addition, someone can identify as, say, a Catholic and believe in abortion, even though it's technically not allowed according to the religion.

Their 'feelings' are the basis of who they are as a person. Human emotion ties into all our behaviors and thoughts. It is extremely relevant and important. Also, if someone feels like an Atheist, then they wouldn't believe in a God in the first place, so your example is nonsensical. You may have been trying to get at Agnostic, not Atheist.

Why does someone have to 'fit the mold'? Why can't there be free-thinking in religion? Religion is a set of personal beliefs and ideals that often guides ones' actions. Everyone has different opinions. Everyone thinks differently. Not everyone is going to conform whole-heartedly to the base of any religion. Why should someone be LABELED as ANYTHING if they don't want to be?

So, that's why she was asking about them on an Internet forum? Because she was so sure?

Religion is personal. Not some sort of group, drink-the-Koolaid mindset, or at least it shouldn't be. I feel sad for people who can't think for themselves and 'chose' a religion simply because they were raised X religion or told they should be X religion.

@Magic, you sure can rant about nothing.

Re-read what I said. "It is defined by the fundamental beliefs of that religion." "Don't murder" is not the a fundamental belief of Catholicism, it is one that is common to almost every religion and therefore It cannot narrow it down. When someone says "I don't believe in god" however, that instantly narrows them down to atheist; It's not really ambiguous, and not really arguable. OP is- from the information given- without any doubt an atheist.

My example is non-sensical because it was intended to point out the non-sensicalness actually. It is exactly what your previous ramble is trying to say. Your very own statement "only you can tell what feels right" is saying exactly that; that OP can "feel" like say, a Christian for example. Based on the information we are given, OP is an atheist, regardless of her feelings. To claim that she can feel otherwise IS non-sensical. If you don't believe in god, you are pretty much an atheist.

Because it makes them more easily identified and described to others. This is why OP wants to find her label.

By the looks of it, the following is PRETTY sure;

Quote:
I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD. PERIOD.

PERIOD!

What OP is looking for is how to describe her religion to others in words, ie, find a label. Not to understand and manipulate her own beliefs as they stand.

Alright, first of all, do NOT let other people try and define you. Your religion is your beliefs and YOUR research. Even your boyfriend shouldn't tell you who you are or aren't.
If you really need a label, research spiritualism and see if you match up. I say research because, again, religion should be what YOU'RE in charge of.

Ahhhh, well. What do you believe happens after you die? Maybe you're a Buddhist. Or perhaps a...deist? I dunno. But you don't believe in any god(s) at all, and by definition that makes you an atheist.

Well, if you don't believe in God, then you're an atheist.

What you believe happens after you die is up to you.

No one can tell you what your religious beliefs are. That's something that you should come to realize yourself. It'll take time, and it might be even a little frustrating. Just don't force a religion or belief on yourself because you feel you have to.
