Ehehe, I would really like some help with getting used to this program. I'm reading a bunch of tutorials and watching videos and whatnot, but I think getting first hand advice from the people on Subeta will help me more. My main issue right now... is just getting used to it, I guess. If you can post good tutorials for beginners, that would be lovely! Also I think personal tips and stories would be nice. ♥ Last Edit by:

 @virgo The line and curve tools only appear when you're working on a Linework Layer, rather than a normal Layer. You can create a Linework Layer by going to Layer > New Linework Layer at the top of the screen, or by using the New Linework Layer button in the layer panel. c:

 @virgoIt's confusing at first, but it's not that hard of a program to get used to. c: And I second what Kailetti said, pretty much. (Though mine is called a vector layer in my program, for whatever reason. Both are the same thing lol.) I've never used the curve tool or anything, SAI makes such pretty lines naturally... and it's not that hard to practice and get used to lining things yourself. Though if you want to use the curve tool, no worries! Just thought I'd mention that SAI already makes such natural pretty lines, even with freehand.

Ah, thank you! n_n Although it says vector layer on mine. Are those the same thing or...? @Slytherin Mine is called a vector layer, too.  SAI does make very pretty lines - that's the main reason I love it. The problem is, I don't make pretty lines. xD I can't make a line to save my life, so I need this tool. @virgoAhh. c: I sucked at lines too for the longest time, but I think SAI really helps if you ever want to improve them. But the curve tool is awesome!

@virgoI have a super old CI tutorial I did with SAI. xD I pretty much use the same tools/do the same thing, just improved on shading and what not; but here you go! [ click ] I might make more in the future whenever I have the time, if you want. ♥

ahahaha, I love SAI to death. It's the only program I use now to do all my art. it's really just a dumb down version of corel painter, but it's very versatile. if you used other art programs before (photoshop, painter, open canvas, etc.) you should have now problem adjusting in a few days of using sai. i love it for linearting because the pressure sensitivity. unlike photoshop, the lines are very nice and crisp, even when you're using a 2px brush. i recommend just keep practicing with it and you'll get the hand of it C8 here's a tutorial i really like. It's pretty simple and easy to follow. [part one] - sai basics [part two] - coloring technique here are another few that might help too ^^ x - basics + other tips x - tool explanations x - advance coloring techniques x - coloring + blinking tutorial i hope those help. as you can tell, i got these off of DA. there are a bunch more you can find on DA xD

Painting with SAI is very easy. Cel-shading, on the other hand, can be more difficult. Which are you looking more into?

I'm slowly getting used to cel-shading in SAI, but it's easier for me in PS, considering that the selection tool isn't as nice in SAI. Maybe it's personal preference, though. @virgo Well, cel-shading in SAI is harder than cel-shading in PS or GIMP, because from my experience, the selection tool isn't as easy to work with. But I've seen some tutorials that are for Photoshop, but can be used for SAI, based on cel-shading. I could also do a mini-tutorial as to how I cel-shade in SAI, since I'm bad at explaining things, if you want.

ah! i see. i NEVER use selection tool, other than flat colors. I pretty much do everything else by hand. selection isn't accurate enough for me.

 Can i just say a massive thankyou to @Slytherin and @radiocannibal for those tutorials you linked! Your CI tut is really helpful, Slyth And that tutorial from Sakimichan is amazingly helpful, Cannibal. I've recently started dabbling into CI's and painting so both of those are just 8D I can't wait to try them out. So yeah Thank you so much for posting those!♥

If you wish to freehand, put your stabiliser value high. I think the default is 3, but if you set it to a higher value, your lines come out straighter and less wobbly! :O
