Hm...January? This semester is Hell Incarnate for me and next semester will probably only be a little bit better but that means I'll have Christmas Break.

I already have a pretty good idea in my head what I'd like to do so...sure, why not, I'll consider this.

I have a question though - I've no way to make the image have a transparent background as I do trad art - but do you know what you want for the profile? The image I have in my head is a full-blown picture like it was ripped from a fairytale book with a background and everything. It'll take forever to do probably XD But it's kind of foresty; I'll be drawing from Celtic fairy paintings and such for specific details on drawing it. This is mind, does it still frustrate your plans if you were to use it for the background of the profile?

Slow response is slow.

I've edited two things in the rules:
1. Human art now also includes faeries, anthros and the like, just to clarify

2. (@ Answering your question) To preserve some uniformity, I've also edited the rules regarding the "no fixed shape" thing;
- no mythological creatures please (dragon, chimaera, griffin etc.)
- real animals are fine
- non-real animals are fine, as long as it's not a mash of animals from a completely different family of animals (e.g. a six-legged cat is off, crossing a bird with a dog is off, but a four-legged creature that cannot be distinguished as either feline or canine would be fine)
Er... I hope this makes sense? XD I suck at making clear rules, methinks.

Has anyone already started work on a creature that doesn't fit into the new rules?

@ Hmm, actually I'd prefer digital for the profile background; digital art is just much smoother in its overall finish (oil paintings and stuff excepted of course). I'd hate for you to have spend massive amounts of time on something that in the end isn't likely to be used, sorry :/

@ Are you asking whether you should or shouldn't include ogham? You really don't have to, unless you yourself think it would fit in with your idea. As to 'large size'; standard screen resolution is 1024 x 768, so I figure it should fill at least a quarter of that to be considered large. Smaller images are fine and can of course compete, but if it's tiny it has less chance of being incorporated into the profile background.

@ I won't forbid you from trying, but as mentioned, I'd prefer digital art for the entire profile, which means you're at a serious disadvantage against everyone with Photoshop/Gimp/whatever :/
Plus, a prefab profile would mean I'm not free to fiddle around with the layout and move things around whenever I change my mind (I'm hoping to make the profile myself, even though I'm horribly inexperienced with that kind of work).

This sounds pretty interesting! Creature design is one of my specialties. Just one question concerning creature crossings: Is it O.K. to merge any mammal with any mammal, or must the species be, say, both ungulates or both carnivores? Also, I know you said unrealistic numbers of appendages is out, but is it alright to improvise and/or exaggerate features?

@ I actually had to Google what ungulate means XD (not a native speaker)
But yeah, crossing any mammal with any other mammal is off; species should be somewhat alike. E.g. an antilope with a tiger is off, but crossing a deer with a goat would be fine. Exaggerating features is fine; improvising is fine as long as it doesn't involve sprouting extra limbs and stuff

I actually came across this board when you made it, and absent mindedly doodling away the other day it came back to me, so I tried something out of boredom.
Say, if I did decide to officially have a go at this contest, would anything like THIS be anything along the lines of what you're looking for?(but with, you know more detail and stuff x3)
I've never entered a contest before x3 I usually just hand out freebies to I can practice. That's only the second fully digital piece of work I've ever done

@ You may certainly compete with traditional art! Only thing is that it can't win the first prize; I've reserved the first prize for the art that will be used in the profile background and it would need a transparent background for that. All other prizes are for all sorts of art.

As a newbie, I'm a bit of a wildcard here... but would you mind if I enter? I've been more into humans lately, but creating fantastical creatures has been something of a forte of mine, since I've been mostly a fantasy artist.

For the species, does it have to be recognizable, like a hybrid? I tend to just go with whatever comes to mind, so the design may incorporate more than just a hybrid would.. though if you just want something like cat/dog, gazelle/antelope, etc, i can stick to that.

Also, is it alright if I incorporate Ogham into his design? I figure that would be a cute way to make him a little celtic.

I'd prefer him to be, well, somewhat recognizable as something that could walk on this planet XD Or at least in his animal forms; a walking tree naturally isn't something you'd be likely to see walking by

I'm having a hard time finding a balance between factual history and his fictional story, and I feel art depicting him as a dragon or other would push the total of story, profile and art too much into the realms of fantasy.
And yes, you're free to incorporate ogham into the design!

I have here a concept wip, but not entirely sure this goes well with all rules and not being native speaker.
So before I could go on, can I get approval/disapproval of the direction I am heading to? At this stage change parts is easy, later stage is harder and double work so I thought I ask. )

@ That looks really good!

I'd class this as tree-elemental, which means you won't have to worry about whether or not it looks like an existing animal or not. The only thing I'd change would be removing the gold crown/tiara/thing (not a native speaker either XD) on top of his head.

@ Both digital and traditional are free compete, but for the first prize I'm looking for digital art with a transparent background. 2nd, 3rd and other prizes are open to anything, regardless of medium, regardless of whether the background is transparent.
As to my personal preference, I don't really have any, sorry XD I don't want to use traditional art for the profile, but I wouldn't mind it at all in the art section.

And my sincere apologies to you both for the late reply, it seems I missed your pings among the pings for my forum groups and deleted them >.< *headdesk*
