|| Introduction ||

The view outside your window is gorgeous.

The hotel's grounds sprawl out in front of you, lush and green. There is a fountain in the distance, and you can barely make out that it is in the shape of a leaping fish. A flying fish, you think, since this is after all the Flying Fish Inn. You've come here for respite, and because your friends who've been have all come back changed- relaxed, open, not at all the way you remembered them. It must be a nice place, you thought, so why not go there?

You didn't pay much attention to the fact that the inn was one you hadn't heard of, even in passing, until about a month ago. If it occurred to you that this was strange, you cast those thoughts aside in favor of enjoying your vacation. You're about to head downstairs to enjoy breakfast.

But as you enter the elevator, you meet someone you weren't expecting. Someone who doesn't look like they're from your world at all.

|| Plot ||

You have just checked in at the Flying Fish Inn, a lovely little hotel with vast grounds and, at their center, a giant fountain. Everything seems to be in order for your vacation, one that you think will refresh you and help you to begin life anew. However, you soon find out that there isn't just one Flying Fish Inn. It's a network of inns scattered throughout various worlds, all of them connected to the place you are now. And the other guests are not all from your own place of origin.

You are able to explore the inn, interact with the staff, and learn more about this strange place. But when it comes to checking out, you haven't been given a distinct date for your departure. You figure that's okay- you'll figure it out when you get the chance.

|| NPCs ||

There are several staff members whom you may interact with. If you run into any staff members during your stay, they may be able to answer your questions. As more staff members appear, they will be added to this list.

Character name: Baron Darkstar
Age: 50
Physical description: The Baron is a tall, imposing man, with a big belly and a head full of unruly gray hair. He is unusually spritely for his age and size, moving at a speed that seems almost unreal. He may look intimidating, but he's always available to make sure his guests are happy. If you run into him, he'll likely ask you if you're enjoying your stay in his gruff, deep voice.
Character inventory: The Baron doesn't live at the Inn, and since he isn't a guest, he didn't bring anything with him. If you were to visit his cottage in the hills surrounding the Inn, you'd find hunting and fishing supplies, a pair of snowshoes for when the weather gets cold, and his mastiff, Max.
Brief summary of their background: The Baron opened the Flying Fish Inn when he was only twenty. This inn is his passion, and making sure that everyone who visits has a great experience is a huge part of his life. Not much is known about the Baron other than that- he generally keeps to himself when he isn't working in the inn.

Character name: Holly Warren
Age: 12
Physical description: Scrawny, with messy blonde hair. It's hard to believe that she's the Baron's granddaughter, but that's what he tells anyone who will listen. It's possible that she's adopted.
Character inventory: Holly drags around a stuffed bunny named Bear. She may be twelve, but she still won't let go of this childhood toy. She tells anyone who asks that she's just keeping it around because the Baron gave it to her, and he doesn't want to believe she's growing up, but this is probably a lie. It's best to humor her if she tells you this, though, because she can be rather nasty to deal with if she decides she doesn't like you.
Brief summary of their background: Holly doesn't seem to have parents, or if she does, they aren't a huge part of her life. She lives with the Baron in his cottage, and sometimes she can be seen wandering the halls of the inn. She's definitely up to something, though it may be nothing more sinister than stealing your bath towels and soaps.

Character name: Daniel, last name unknown. It might be Callahan, considering he works for Callahan Floors and Windows.
Age: early 20s
Physical description: He looks to be fairly strong. He has dark hair and a scar across his upper lip.
Character inventory: Various tools.
Brief summary of their background: Little is known about Daniel. He's a quiet sort of man, just here to put down some floors. Though perhaps if you get to talking to him, he may give you more information about the Inn, maybe even more than you care to know.

Casey Monroe stood by his window, staring out at the hotel grounds. Having grown up in a city of steel and bullets, he'd never really appreciated green the way most people did; if he wasn't choking on smog and pollution, he wasn't quite sure if he could breathe properly. But others he knew that felt the same, people he knew had never set foot outside of the Stilwater city limits, had told him this place was divine. He was inclined to believe them.

With his suitcase sitting half unpacked on his luxurious bed-- the deluxe room paid for in full by their last shipment of Johnny Gat bobbleheads-- Casey could feel his stomach growling. Travel of any kind always made him nauseous and he hadn't wanted to take the chance that he might throw up because of motion sickness in public, so he hadn't eaten since long before he'd left. Although he'd never really had the most accurate internal clock, 'day' and 'night' being completely arbitrary when you could just snap your fingers and get whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted it, he knew it was around breakfast time-- or at least what normal people with a definite sleep schedule would consider breakfast time. When he'd booked his room, it hadn't specified if meals were included, but it didn't particularly matter anyway as he'd remembered to bring his wallet either way.

He stepped out of his room, remembering at the last moment to lock it behind him and tucking the key into a secondary pocket on his trusty thigh holster. It sat beside his gun, something he never went anywhere without, mostly because it acted as a security blanket for him. When you had people out to kill you on a daily basis because of your position as leader of the most well-known gang in North America, a gun was always a lovely thing to have. After jiggling the door knob to ensure it was in fact locked, he strode down the hall towards the elevator. The five-inch heels of his boots clicked against the immaculate tile as he walked, sounding almost like a warning; everyone back home knew to get out of the way when they heard that sound.

He hit the call button for the elevator and stood back, one hand on his hip in an overly dramatic pose as he waited. Casey was hardly what you would call patient.

Holly tiptoed to the elevator, dragging Bear behind her. She was humming a tune to herself, periodically interrupting her song to yawn and scratch at a small pink sore on her forehead. The pockets of her nightgown were heavy with treasures- shower caps, bottles of shampoo, and even a little sewing kit that she'd nicked from the maid's cart. It had been easy- Holly was so tiny that most people barely noticed her, and those who did generally were sweet to her because she was the baron's granddaughter.

She pressed the elevator button and waited, rocking back and forth on her new pink slippers. At last the elevator doors opened, and she rode to another floor that she'd chosen at random. She waited for the doors to open again, hoping that maybe she'd run into someone interesting. She was looking down as the elevator doors opened, and the first thing she saw was a pair of high heeled boots.

"Oooh," she gasped. She could see her reflection in them, and she made a face at herself. "Those are some snazzy shoes," she said, looking up at the person wearing them. He looked somewhat annoyed, maybe because the elevator had taken a while to reach him. "I wasn't playing in the elevator," she mumbled, "just so you know." She crossed her fingers behind her back- it was a pretty blatant lie.

Yorda stared out through the window, palms pressed against the glass as she studied the grounds outside the room. The... sky- sky, was it?- was so bright blue and pretty. Green grass waved gently in the breeze, and water gurgled in a big funny-shaped fountain in the center. She was tempted to run straight back outside and just lie out there, enjoying the sun. But Ico had been quite clear (to the extent that he could be clear, given that they didn't even speak the same language) that he wanted her to be here, for whatever reason. As much as she disliked being inside a moment longer than necessary, she trusted him. Besides, this was actually a nice place. No scary things lurking in shadows anywhere.

She looked back around the half-empty room, filled with only a few pieces of furniture that she didn't recognize the use for. Her lack of belongings to fill it with made it seem so bare, probably more than it really was. Having never thought about such a thing before, this didn't really bother her. Turning away from the window, she padded out of the room, trailing her fingers across everything in reach as she passed by. By instinct, she glanced around the hallway for dark portals, or anything else that might suggest ghosts or shadow creatures, but it was empty and quiet.

So distracted by her surroundings as she was, she didn't notice the man standing there until she'd nearly bumped into him. With a soft gasp of surprise, she skittered backwards, eyes wide as she stared at the stranger, a hand over her open mouth. Another person, a real one like Ico? But he looked so different, and nearly as tall as her mother had been! After several seconds of just staring, Yorda cautiously inched closer and reached out with her other hand to touch him on the shoulder- then yelped in shock as the wall in front of them slid open and a small girl about her own age stepped out, clutching a fluffy creature of some kind. Magic! This place really was like home, she knew it!

Casey looked down at the small, jumpy girl who had bumped into him, raising an immaculate eyebrow. She seemed in equal parts panicked and fascinated, and there was something altogether off about her-- she didn't seem to be quite all there, like she was somehow between realities. She was pretty, he supposed, but despite his fashion sense he hardly considered himself an excellent judge of feminine beauty.

As the elevator doors slid open, he looked to the little girl standing inside, chuckling at her comment about his shoes. "Thanks," he said with a little laugh. Children tended to think he was weird for the way he dressed, not that he cared; most of the children he encountered in his life were generally afraid of him anyway, taught by their parents to think of him as some sort of bogeyman because of his choice of profession. He looked to the small girl who had collided with him, then pointed to the inside of the elevator. "You getting on?" he asked as he took the first step into the contraption.

He was starting to realize that something strange was going on here, but he just shrugged it off; nothing much in life really threw Casey Monroe for a loop anymore, after all of the zombies and human cloning and teleporting strippers he had seen in his life. If there was something strange going on, it really wasn't any of his business; he was there for vacation and nothing else.

Yorda stared at the two strangers in the small room, eyes slightly narrowed in focus. There was nothing inside that she could see, which made its purpose a bit questionable. She'd seen machines that could move around, taking the people inside with them, but they all looked like machines, not doors. It didn't glow or do anything particularly interesting, which made her doubt her original guess of magic.

Whatever it was, she was reasonably sure that it was safe. People wouldn't be around here if it was dangerous, after all. Further encouraged by the man's question and gesture- though she didn't understand a word- she trotted after him into the elevator. With a serene smile, she reached out and grabbed onto the hand he'd been pointing with.
"Who are you? I am Yorda", she greeted him, clearly finding nothing odd about what she was doing. She looked around the little room again, immediately focusing on the columns of glowing circles on the wall next to the door. Without even thinking about it, she walked towards the wall (still holding onto the man's hand) and reached out to touch one of the buttons.

Casey looked down at the hand the strange, small girl was holding on to. She spoke to him in some strange language that he couldn't understand as he shook his head, pursing his lips and sighing. He didn't try to pull his hand away; he was used to being manhandled in far less innocent ways and she seemed content. Instead he just reached across the elevator and hit the button for the ground floor, still feeling his stomach rumble with hunger.

As the elevator jerked to life, he looked at the other girl on the elevator; she was dressed in nightclothes and her pockets were filled to the point of sagging with the sort of complimentary gifts one expected to find in a hotel room, like little bottles of shampoo. He couldn't help but let slip a little smile and a chuckle; she was pretty young, and to most families that sort of mischief would be considered either normal mischief or misbehavior; the gang leader fondly remembered his early adolescent misdeeds, like his first convenience store holdup and his first joy ride, both at age eleven.

Good times, he thought, wondering why the elevator was so bloody slow.

Holly was confused. The man who'd gotten on the elevator seemed nice enough, if a little out of place, but the girl, who looked to be about her age, was speaking a language she didn't understand. It seemed to be a greeting, so she said, "I'm Holly," quietly, and not to anyone in particular, even though it was the girl's comment that prompted her to answer.

She was silent for the rest of the elevator ride. As the doors slid open, a large man with messy gray hair appeared. He grunted Holly's name.

"Grandpa!" she shouted, then said, a little more quietly, "Is everything all right?" Holly knew the Baron didn't come up to the hotel too often, unless something had gone wrong.

He shook his head. "There's been an accident, Holly. But don't get too worried. It wasn't a major one," he said in what was meant to be a reassuring tone. "I don't want you wandering the hotel alone, though. Also," he said to the other two in the elevator, "I'd advise that you watch your step. This is an old inn, and there are some loose floorboards that could trip you. It's a nice place, and I want to make sure you enjoy your stay thoroughly. So be careful."

Holly frowned. "Another person tripped?"

The Baron nodded. "We're going to have to replace the floors soon."

The gang leader gave a cautious look to the older man outside of the elevator. In his twenty-something, almost thirty-something years of life, he had only met two kinds of business proprietors; the kind that could be bribed to at least a reasonable capacity, and the kind that had an agenda of their own. His keen instincts told him that this fellow certainly wasn't the former variety.

"I'll try to stick to the areas that aren't falling apart, then," he said, narrowing his eyes a little. "Old floors are a dog in heels."

With his street-born, full-blown paranoia making alarm bells go off in his head around the older man, he looked down at the girl who was still clinging to his hand. He nodded out of the doors. "You getting off here?" he asked, although he wasn't sure she could understand him-- she didn't seem to speak English. She hadn't hit any other buttons, so she assumed this was where she wanted to be-- then again, she'd seemed pretty surprised by the elevator in the first place, so he wasn't sure she was even fully aware of the purpose of the machine. Maybe she was some kind of recluse-- the kind of person who just spent their entire lives away from human society.

It was hard not to laugh at that thought, although it wasn't particularly funny. Casey knew his life was kind of like a television show or a particularly juicy novel sometimes, and it was difficult to remember that the entire world wasn't like that, too.

Judging by their expressions, neither of the others in the elevator had understood Yorda any more than she'd understood them. It was disappointing, but not much of a surprise. She frowned in thought, mentally sifting through her rather scanty knowledge of the other language, which consisted mainly of variations on the themes of "Come, follow me", "Run away!", and... that was it, more or less.

Giving up on making a proper introduction to the other girl, she returned to studying her surroundings with a distant, slightly sleepy expression, nodding vaguely to the newcomer as he boarded the elevator and spoke to them. It was actually rather uninteresting in here, and the elevator’s movements didn’t even surprise her very much. She’d been inside similar machines several times before, though they’d lacked such minor details as having walls to keep people from falling out and plummeting off a cliff to their doom. Thankfully, that didn't seem like such a problem around here.

Yorda blinked and stared up at the first man as he asked her a question. Without any better ideas in mind, she nodded to him, hoping that it was the correct response to whatever he was saying.

Casey stepped out of the elevator, walking around the older man and young girl. After his comments, he couldn't help but watch his feet as he walked; stilettos and old floors rarely mixed well. As he stepped into the hallway, he kept an eye on the girl-- despite the fact that she'd just sort of appeared, he knew he would feel bad if anything happened to her.

"You hungry?" he asked, not quite sure why he was still talking to her. He looked around the ground floor-- it seemed fairly unremarkable, although it was just as pretty as the rest of the inn. He sniffed the air; he could smell something delicious cooking somewhere nearby, it was just a matter of finding where the smell was coming from. He could always just ask the proprietor where it was, but there was just something about him that unsettled Casey, and he'd gotten where he was by trusting his instincts.

(Of course, those were the same instincts that landed him on a boat that had ended up exploding and landing him in a coma for five years. He tried to forget that fact, though.)

Yorda threw one last curious glance back at the other girl before jogging after Casey. Most people her age probably knew better by now than to walk off with random strangers, especially in an unfamiliar place, but this information had apparently never reached her. To say that hers was a sheltered life was huge and slightly disturbing understatement. Besides, he seemed nice, not that she was much of a judge of that, either. At least, he tolerated having her following him around, which was more than good enough. It was something she was quite used to doing- in fact, she never felt quite safe while by herself.

She quickly became absorbed once again in staring out of one of the several windows in the room, so that she barely even noticed his question.
"The 'sky' is so beautiful, don't you...?", she began softly, before glancing over. With a little shrug, she took one last look before leaving the window and following again, imitating him and sniffing the air. Something smelled good, not too far away from this room.
"What is that?"

Following the scent, the gang leader continued to walk until he reached an immaculate pair of double doors inlaid with a plaque that read 'dining room'. He gave one of the two doors a testing push and, finding it open, stepped inside. He took only a few steps, holding the door open for the girl following him. She seemed to be taking her sweet time lingering by the windows, but soon enough caught up.

The room was a well-decorated, if very traditional sort of dining room; it reminded him of the nicer family restaurants in Stilwater that still managed to stay in business despite the massive number of chain restaurants. On the far end of the room was a series of tables with platters, hot plates and other containers lined up, hosting a variety of traditional breakfast foods as well as things such as sandwiches. Looking at the clock mounted on the wall, Casey guessed it was because it was rather close to lunch time. Navigating around the tables, he walked up to the buffet, giving it an appraising look.

"Not as good as home," he mumbled to himself. "But not bad, not bad at all."

He took one of the plates from the end of the table and started making his way down, adding food to his plate as he went.

Daniel looked up from the plate where he was piling food. "'Scuse me," he said to the strangely dressed man behind him. "You know if the sandwiches are any good?"

Daniel looked at his high heels. He tried not to stare, but the man just seemed out of place. Then again, he thought, chuckling, who at the Inn seemed to fit in? No one, really. He had worked for Callahan Floors and Windows long enough to know that. The Callahans supplied the Flying Fish Inn with new windows and floors whenever they needed them, which was often, as they always seemed to be in need of repair. Daniel knew a good deal about why, but he'd been sworn to secrecy, so he wasn't about to reveal that to just some traveler who was staying there.

Behind the man he saw a young girl. Maybe Holly will have a new friend, he thought, grinning and showing his yellowed teeth. He would always bring a present for the Baron's granddaughter when he came by. Living with the Baron couldn't have been easy, he thought, so why not make the little girl's life happier?

((OOC: @Enamuko @Meek Sorry for the delay! Casey looked up at the other man and gave him something that resembled a cross between a smirk and a genuine smile. "Wouldn't know," he replied. "Just got here myself." He watched the way the man stared a little, and he couldn't blame him; even in a place as crazy as Stilwater or Steelport, he seemed a little out of place. He was used to stares, anyway; ever since he'd discovered his affinity for women's clothing while he was still in his early days of high school, he'd gotten stares everywhere he went. Added to the wow factor was the fact that he was not only a crossdresser, but over six foot, built and bald to boot.

(In short, Casey was generally the most manly looking crossdresser anyone knew. Not that his friends and acquaintances generally knew many other crossdressers.)

"You a guest here?" he asked. His accent-- a Cockney lilt that tended to get thicker and thicker if he was particularly sad, angry, happy or anxious-- was showing through brilliantly at the moment.
