Hi! I'm Pete and I'm considering making a web site. However, I need advice as to who I should book a domain with.

I've been using Freewebs for years but I don't know if I should use them for a professional site. I also Googled web domains and the first site that appeared, Domain Registration Services (Australia), looks okay to me but I don't even know what okay is for this sort of thing.

I'm a fish out of water and need some of your website experience! Thanks Subeta. ♥

@Peet What kind of website are you making?

Also just to make sure that you know, you need both a domain AND hosting for a website? The domain is the actual URL that your site has, whereas the hosting is where all of those site files and content are stored. Generally when you buy web hosting it will come with a free domain anyway, so I wouldn't worry about buying them separately.

If you want something free, http://www.000webhost.com/ is a really good free host. You don't get your own domain, but you'd have a yourname.000webhost.com address (or whatever it is).

If you DO want a .com domain, some of the free hosts I've heard about are:
-GoDaddy (kind of crappy but cheap)
-HostCherry (I've never used this one but someone else on Subeta recommended it and they are INSANELY CHEAP!)
-HostGator
-Super Green / JustHost

I personally use Super Green because the first time you sign up is so cheap, and they have unlimited EVERYTHING... but renewing was a big pain in the butt.

@Sammii What kind of pain in the butt was it? I'm looking to make a personal site that advertises my musical career and such, namely to attach to the bottom of a resume. (Which is why I want a .com to make it look professional.) I'm looking at paying around $10 a month max? Or less? I'm just a little nervous about the whole thing because it's something I've never done before and because I live in Australia, I don't want to run into issues where I have to call them and complain. (I don't know what I'd do if they ripped me off and wouldn't give my money back...)

I have to say this is the most helpful forum I've posted on yet, though.

@Peet Well, for my first renewal I paid the same price as when I signed up (which was a really good deal). But then this month when my second renewal came up, they suddenly tried to charge me their "regular price" which was 2.5 times what I had been paying. It was really frustrating because their "regular prices" are not shown ANYWHERE on their website and I had to specifically email them to get that info. But I doged so much that they offered me a 20% discount so meh.

Those HostCherry guys are super cheap but it seems a bit sketchy that I can't find a review of their site anywhere... I would go with SuperGreen; their sign-up offer is a bit cheaper than HostGator and you get your domain free. Just keep in mind that these are their regular prices after 1-2 renewals:

36 month plan $6.95 per month ($250.20 total)
24 month plan $7.95 per month ($190.80 total)
12 month plan $8.95 per month ($107.40 total)

Let me know if you decide to go with them cause I think I get money for referring people. XD

I've just started my 2nd year with Dreamhost, the first of which was for free since I registered during their superbowl promotion - basically it cost me 9$ for a domain and unlimited hosting for the first year!

This year I had to pay for but it was only about 119$ for a full year, unlimited everything, and I now have 2 domains hosted under them. I have not had a single problem with them thus far :3

@Peet

Edit: I'm also in Australia too :3 Australian services seem to be overpriced in comparison to others, just keep that in mind

Not many people seem to have heard of it, but just gonna throw it out here. I have a website with HostPolar (hostpolar.com).

I've had it for a year now and had no problems! Customer service is great. The main reason I chose them though is because it's only 6 dollars a month, and it's really easy to find a 50% off coupon if you know where to look, so I only pay 3 dollars a month. Great if you're on a tight budget like me. :p
