So my coworker called me last week and asked if I would take a few days for her next week. I grimaced when I heard who was on the phone. And then as she was talking, I was trying to think up a viable excuse as to why I couldn't do it. And then she drops the bombshell. She doesn't want me to take one day, or two days, oh no...she wants me to take Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings for her. The shift starts at 6AM which means I have to get up by 4:30AM. And that Friday? I already told another co-worker I'd take his evening shift. This means on Friday I'll be working from 6-11 in the morning and then 6-12 at night. And I am terrible at falling asleep and sleeping for a decent amount of time when I know I have to be somewhere the next morning. I always wake up every hour or so. This also means that I'll have to shut my cats out of my bedroom which makes me feel bad because they're my babies and we always sleep in a pile which sometimes wakes me up when they move around, but it normally doesn't matter because I don't normally work during the day. I also feel awful because I'm going to have to drink coffee again on those mornings just to stay alive and be able to drive safely...but I gave coffee up for Lent and I feel really bad going back on my word. Oh, and not only do I have to work those mornings, but I also have two important choir practices Wednesday and Thursday nights. I'm horrible at taking naps too so that's never any help. I'm probably going to have to skip the gym all this week for the second week in a row. I skipped this week to help my neighbors paint their house pretty much every day and I was too tired to work out after. And all this lack of sleep, the migraine I'm almost certain of getting, all of this would be a lot better if I knew my coworker would be grateful I said yes...but no, she's never grateful for anything. She's an awful dog and has basically hated me since the day I started here. Why couldn't I have just said no to my stupid coworker?! Oh, that's right...I'm so hopelessly in debt I can't turn down a single offer of extra days at work, especially because I normally only work on Saturday nights. FML

tl;dr: I have to get up @ 4:30AM four days in a row next week to take shifts for my ungrateful dog of a coworker.

Any tips on falling asleep faster? Staying asleep all night? Caffeine I can have that's not coffee and readily available somewhere like McDonalds? Are those 5 hour energy shots safe?

Edit:

There's a silver lining in everything I guess. Dancing is going quite fast this time of the morning when pretty much no one else in the area is online. XD

You do have the right to say no and live your own life. Did she explain why she had to give up so many shifts so suddenly? And if there are days you have prior plans work can't make you come in to fulfill another person's shift. Hell even IF you're at work already and someone calls out for the evening, work still can't make you stay past the time you're scheduled unless they ask you and you're ok with it.

Now as for caffeine coffee really is the best bet but can you stand any energy drinks? Redbull on ice with like a shot of some kind of berry (huckleberry, blackberry, blueberry ect ect) flavor is good. Some people like rockstar and monsters... but whatever you do DON'T mix redbull and airborne you'll have so munch energy that even a half hour rest will be impossible lol

I personally stay away from those energy shots I have a friend who took half of one before work and it landed her in the hospital.

She's going on vacation. And I know they can't make me take the shifts, but I feel like I have to anyways because I need the money so badly. I guess I'll live through it...it's just going to suck. I think I'll stay away from the energy shots too. I also can't have anything like Monster or Red Bull...I had the Mountain Dew version once and holy crap, I was up for almost two days straight and then I crashed hard. So none of that.

@ixtab
I didn't say no because I really need the money. I feel like I have to grab at every opportunity to make money or my parents will guilt trip me for it because I'm still living under their roof.

have you tried the energy drinks in half amounts? or maybe less? I personally find redbull to be less of a crash and the flavor shot of a berry type syrup helps take some edge off for me.

But I hear ya at chances to make cash. I just feel she did this half assed honestly. Many places require you to let them know about two weeks before you take even a weekend vacation so they can schedule people to cover things.

I think it was only half the can I drank that time. I don't care to chance it again. If I fall asleep at my desk, they're just going to have to wake me up, lol. I work at a local newspaper at the photo desk. All of us photo techs sort of police ourselves when it comes to taking days off and getting people to cover. There's only myself, the girl I'm covering for, and another guy that do this job though. One or two of our photographers may be able to cover in an emergency, but it's pretty much just the three of us. Although the dog I'm covering for, I've been told by the other guy to never rely on her taking a day - she won't help anyone. Next time, excuse or no, I'm not helping her out either. I don't care if that makers me a dog or poorer...she can go screw herself.

Ah ok it was just an idea I had lol well there's also chocolate covered coffee/espresso beans that might help for the energy? It might count to pass around your giving up coffee for lent thing as I'm assuming you meant the drinks not the beans it comes from?
