Why do we have a religion? Why do we have so many gods? Which one is the "true" god to believe in?

@Ipsi
It starts when one thinks there is a superior entity. For example I have so much bad luck today I'm sure someone is after me. And when several people think the same thing, and are under oppression, they can tell themselves stories to feel better, transmit them etc.
There are so many gods because there are so many societies, cultures and contexts.
The true god to believe in is the one you believe in, whether that be the pink invisible unicorn, the flying spaghetti monster, the aliens, Râ, God, Loki or the Internet.

The origin of theism came before recorded knowledge--even cave drawings--tens-hundreds of thousands of years ago when fire was first being domesticated. The human brain hasn't evolved since that time, which means that humans then were just as curious, just as clever, and just as capable of creating wildly fantastic solutions to exotic problems as we are today. I like Carl Sagan's vision of the early human sitting around a fire, looking up at the stars and wondering what they were... perhaps they were faraway campfires of some other wandering people. But then, why weren't strange tribes falling from the sky? How do those strange beings stay 'up'? They must be very powerful.

I'm something of an agnostic, myself. I believe "If god were small enough to be understood, He would not be big enough to be worshiped."-Evelyn Underhill

In my opinion if God exists, it doesn't exist in some emotional human-like form waiting to punish or reward us for our actions. God exists in the laws of nature it created, and through these laws, namely cause and effect, humans punish and reward themselves. Studying nature and human society has led me to the belief that there is no divine intervention. If a Grand Creator exists, he cares for humans no more than for a mouse or mosquito or for one of the hundreds of billions of living bacteria that reside in your stomach. My divine duty, as I see it, is to be true to my own morality, to follow what I have individually identified as the right path. Things like "the golden rule"--I believe in that, not because it's written in some ancient book. I don't believe in things just because they're old, that's dumb. Really, it's inconceivably stupid to believe something just because it's the oldest written opinion on the subject. I believe in it because it makes sense, because it seems like that is the best way to ensure the biggest number of people have the best experience possible in this life.

It's not morality, it's common sense. I want to enjoy life. If I help others enjoy life, I will enjoy being around them more. I should help others enjoy life. So basically what I'm trying to say is that I am my own God, coming to terms with himself. Something like how every human is made up of the pieces of old exploded stars and therefore we are the universe, trying to know itself. The stars, exploring the machinations of the stars.(More Carl Sagan for ya')

Another idea that has romanced me over the years is that the universe /is/ God. That by creating the universe, God effectively did away with himself, assuring that there is no God to know, other than the Cosmos of which we are a part.

"That which is now called natural philosophy, embracing the whole circle of science, of which astronomy occupies the chief place, is the study of the works of God, and of the power and wisdom of God in his works, and is the true theology."--Thomas Paine

tl;dr science and logical thinking ftw.

I like this a lot and it is very close to what I believe actually. Not the physical universe though as I don't believe G-d is physical but I think everything is literally an extension from the Eyn Sof/G-d. My Rabbi once told me that "we in a way are G-d looking for Himself". Yeah sorry...got carried away there

I think we have so many deities all over the world due to humanity itself; cultural differences etc. I still think we all worship the same Thing in the end though. I dislike using the term "true" G-d for that reason. It reeks of elitism or "we are saved and you are not" idiocy.
It's like all the names we have for G-d; it's so alien to us we cannot really grasp It so we make up all these funky names and metaphors.

God and gods have been around for countless years, just as @Dacrygelosis has mentioned.

A lot of religions are very similar. In Hindu, they have a Jesus although he looks different than the standard blue-eyed white-skinned Christian version.

God and religion fills a HUGE void in every human's life. And that void is knowledge. Since we don't know everything, we have believed in an entity to explain the things we don't know, and to explain the happenings of the world.

Personally, I believe God does exist and constantly gives us the choice to do good or evil or neither. I believe in evil entities, I believe in good ones. And I also believe science one day will be able to explain these more.

I agree! A lot of people whether religious or not, always think their ideas are better than someone else's. And when it comes to something as strong, and as long-lived as religion, this is why there have been so many wars.

I thought Dacrygelosis summed it up very well.

I see the creation of gods and goddesses as rationale to explain the universe around us. As far as if there is a 'true god' to believe in, it depends entirely on your perspective. Personally, I don't believe in any divine entities.

I think aids is bad. What do you think about it?

If you are going to start a debate topic, explain why you feel that way and give reasons.

As it stands now, this is not a debate.
