I often think about living in different countries around the world (after having visited a decent amount, not just on a whim xP) and it seems like so much fun. I mean, I know every country has their problems (being from the US, I fully understand it, lol) and that there's a lot of things both legally and culturally I'd have to get used to, but it is, at the least, very nice to dream about living somewhere else on this planet of ours.

What about you guys?
Where would you live if another country if you could, and why?

I've always wanted to go to Greece since I learned about greek mythology as a kid. I thought it was a magical/ancient place... but yeah. Ain't gonna live there when it's broke

I think it would be fun to live in a country for a few years, but I think I'd ultimately want to live in the US for most of my life and just travel instead. But I have thought about maybe living in Korea for a couple of years if I ever learn Korean and being a translator or english teacher over there :3

I've always wanted to live in the UK somewhere, but of course in a perfect world, I'd always be traveling and never be home anyway, so I guess it wouldn't matter... xD
And learning to drive on the opposite side of the road would be a pain, so it's probably never going to happen anyway. haha

I'm from the US, and I've lived in both Japan and Germany. Both experiences were great, and I would love to live in Japan again for a year or two, but I couldn't ever settle down there. I could totally see myself living in Germany, though, if only for the kinds of benefits workers get over there! Other than that, I think I'd love to live just about anywhere for a year at a time. Over the summer I'm going to start learning Korean, and then I might live in Korea for a little while. And right now I'm seriously considering going to grad school in Germany.

Yeah, I think I'd like living in other countries, for a while, anyway. Over time, things would bother me though, like continental climates, longer work hours, laws I don't agree with, etc.. Plus you're just not on the same level of understanding as with someone from your own culture - I've offended many a foreigner by 'insulting' them, when it was only banter lol.

I've not exactly has much experience of living abroad - the only other country I've ever lived in is Ireland, and it's so similar to England it's not worth mentioning.

I'd love to travel around the world, but I can't imagine ever living in another country. Many of my friends seem to think that living in Finland is like living in a small cottage somewhere far from civilization, but I think living here is great. Sure we have some problems too, but overall everything's pretty good here. [:

Some tropical island like Fiji. I'm sure there's atleast one hospital on the island that I could work for as a RN and I'd be living in paradise.

Well idk if I'd want to live there permanently or anything, but I think the UK is so beautiful. I think seeing all the castles and the beautiful scenery would be really interesting. Even though it apparently rains a lot I don't think I'd really mind it that much. Also I really appreciate how less absorbed the people in the UK are when it comes to popular culture. It just seems like there's less obsession with personal popular culture(like what a celebrity ate for lunch..) and more to do with the celebrity's work than in America, which is how I think it should be. Plus London is one(if not the most prominent) of the fashion capitals so I'm sure that'd be fun to visit.

When I went to the UK, I really loved it. But @Follywood made a good point. Since I'm American, most countries would hate me. And even then I'm really bad at making friends, let alone ones who hate me because of my heritage.

But on the upside, my obsession with Doctor Who wouldn't be so weird there.

@Memory I lived in Canada for two years. The whole needing your birth certificate thing to get any kind of official anything is a pretty big pain. Expensive school sucks. Getting a work permit is complicated.

Living in a place for under 6 months or studying abroad with a school who can answer all of your immigration questions would probably be fun, but trying to up and move to a new country permanently is much more involved.

If myself or my husband were offered a job abroad then I might take it, depending on the country. But I will likely never voluntarily do it again.

The laughter had not quite died from his face.

I don't think I'd want to live in any other country. Finland is a great place - of course it has it's own faults, but generally speaking things are alright here. I love the nature here, and the seasons (though a six month winter sucks a bit), and also the fact that I can do my own thing without being harassed by the police or something.

I'd love to spend some time in Norway and New Zealand, though.

And I have a thing for New Orleans. If I didn't live in this country, I'd definitely live in New Orleans.

Well, I lived in Taiwan for three months( I'm from the US) but I speak semi-fluent mandarin and pretty much all my relatives are in Taiwan so it wasn't really a stretch since I could usually ask them for help and conversing wise had no issues.

I have always wanted to live in Europe and my second language in high school was French so I can still read a bit of French now, but the one thing I discovered when I went to Europe for vacation back in 2009 was that my French ability was actually pretty paltry. I could figure out signs and kind of do simple stuff, but that was pretty much it and part of the reason I went to Europe in the first place was to see if I could get into a French university for graduate school, but that wasn't really feasible. The main reason being that most of them required linguistic ability in French and while I can kind of read French, my actual ability is nowhere near fluent or even semi-fluent, more like broken, limping.. can barely piece together sentences...

I would love to move to New Zealand, and visit all of Scandinavia for at least 1 month each.

I fell in love with New Zealand and it's beautiful landscapes from Lord of the Rings, and I think it would be a grand place to live!

To be honest, I can't see myself settling anywhere but the west coast of the United States. I'd probably want to travel to Australia, New Zealand, and possibly northern Europe and the UK at one point, but after a while of travelling, I just want to crawl back into my own bed, in a culture I've grown up in, and have full access to my favorite foods.

I want to live in Ireland so bad it's not funny. It is ridiculously hard to get a job there if you're not from there though. T_T I would do anything. Absolutely anything. I don't care if it's menial labor or whatever. I don't care if I have to live in a box. I just want to be in Ireland. Forever.

I'm probably always going to be a U.S. girl, but I seriously wouldn't mind getting a job and living in Iceland or Sweden. I lived in Iceland for two years (military parents) and it was GREAT. I've never been to Sweden, but I've researched it a bit and the country is beautiful and the culture is pretty cool. c:

Preferably a slightly warmer country, maybe somewhere in East Asia or the US.

Australia and New Zealand look amazing too! Both warm and beautiful

There are loads of other places I want to visit, like Japan, but I think it would be really difficult to learn a whole new language

I lived in Italy for a couple of months, and I did enjoy it, but I missed home, and it was always planned as a temporary thing. I'd love to try the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, but at this stage of my life that would involve giving up my career, and I'm not ready to do that yet. Plus there's the financial aspect of uprooting and visiting/moving to another country. I'd definitely like to one day though

I am lucky enough to live in Norway, and I do believe it is one of the best places in the world to live. The downside is that the winters are long, cold and dark.
If I could live here for six months of the year and go somewhere else for the other six, I'd be happy. France, UK or Portugal would be nice.

@Memory

I am abroad now. I am from the US, but I have lived in Austria for the last three years. It was great the first few years, but I have to admit that I am missing home now and am doing a lot of back and forth debating with myself if I want to come home at the end of this year or still stay here longer. I think it's worth it to live somewhere else for a while though. It's good to get a different perspective than your own.

There are some programs like Fulbright that can give you the chance to leave the country for a while. That's how I ended up here was working in schools teaching English, but now I go to university like a regular Austrian student. If you do want to study abroad without the help of a US university study abroad program it can be hard. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get to stay here this year and someone above mentioned that you do have to have the test to prove you can speak the language. I also had to take a test proving my German was above a certain level. Going through a program like Fulbright or a University study abroad program makes it much simpler though. It doesn't have to be so hard...usually just if you go it alone.

From what I have heard from my friends there are also a lot of opportunities in places like South Korea to work as language assistants in schools. I thought about looking into it more, but if I don't spend the rest of my life living in Austria I will probably move back to the US. I have had enough of moving around and only having a job for a year or two, I am in more of a settle down mode these days, though I will always love to travel and the places I would like to go next are Scotland and Portugal and also see some more of the states.

I would like to live in Germany because I lived there as a child and can still speak some of the language. I would also like to live in Russia because I love the cold, but to be honest I have no idea what is going on in Russia currently so I will have to do my research before I even consider living there.

Me and my philosophically identical friend from Norway are sort of planning to move to some other country together. Personally, I'd be fine with just moving to Norway, but he hates his country for it's climate. We were thinking about France or maybe Japan. I'd prefer Japan, to be honest. I love France for it's spirit and artists, but social-wise it's kinda unsuitable for me.

As a Russian citizen, I wouldn't recommend moving to this country at least until Putin retires. And if it's just for cold, maybe you would consider Scandinavia instead?

I've lived in both China and the UK, but been to plenty other places in the world - would like to spend a few years in NY/San Francisco, Italy, Japan, Salzburg, Paris... I've uprooted plenty of times and have a cross-cultural background so making friends and being a cultural chameleon in an unfamiliar culture is fine with me. In a sense, CCKs like me belong everywhere but nowhere. We're never part of a singular culture but we have the opportunity and open-mindedness to accept and incorporate aspects of every other culture, and that's the magical thing about globalisation!

I'm from Hungary, and I had the chance to live in the US for a year. It was such a life-changing experience that I can't even put it in to words. I know that the US has it's problems as well, but compared to the Hungarians everyone was so happy and easygoing and friendly. That's what I miss the most in my country, because people are quite reserved and they tend to live in the past instead of the present.
So I'M either thinking of moving to the US, or maybe The Netherlands, or Switzerland! But we will have to see.
