I'm curious as to what you guys think, honestly. I just recently dreaded my hair after letting it finally grow out. So far I haven't really had any comments because they are quite far from being mature. They hardly even look like dreadlocks and I have to wear them up for work and whatnot so they're even more disguised.

My mother says they're disgusting, embarrassing, dirty, etc.
I obviously don't agree.

I think people just aren't educated enough on dreadlocks and believe all of the stereotypes and myths of dreadlocks.

Yes, you *can* wash them, no you *don't* have to cut them out if you want to get rid of them.

So, what do you guys think?
Sorry if this is already a thread, I didn't see one out there but I didn't look too hard.

@Tofu

I know that, once someone has them for a while, they can get really dirty if you don't clean them properly. However, I wouldn't consider dreads to be a 'work of art'.

If you want to have them, go ahead, your hair after all. I personally wouldn't get them, but then I won't tell people their dreadlocks are 'disgusting'. That's just rude, in my opinion.

I don't think dreadlocks are disgusting, and it's awfully rude for other people to make such mean comments about your hair. ;-; It's just another form of expression. They require a certain amount of maintenance, more so than most hairstyles. If they're clean, I think they're beautiful. They suit some folks better than others, though!

I would never waste my time or anyone else's by going up to them and rudely commenting on their appearance. But since you're asking for feedback: they're hideous and I highly associate them with poor personal hygiene.

I don't consider them unhygienic or art... They're just a hairstyle to me. I think they look cool, but only on certain people. I've seen people with dreads that really can't pull them off well.

I don't see them as unhygienic right off the bat because I don't automatically know how the person takes care of them. I know the majority of people think dreadlocks mean that the person doesn't ever wash them. I always try to correct them when they start out by saying the person (or their hair) is dirty.

And I don't see them as an art form exactly because I don't consider the majority of hair styles an art form. I see hair as more of a freedom of expression.

To me it's no better or worse than any other hairstyle with an exorbitant mess of product in it; there's just different means of maintaining the style, and it certainly isn't all unhygienic. Wouldn't personally go for it, and not something I'd sport to an interview, but there's no shame in it.

Not really worth the debate imo.

I think that they are unhygienic. Yes, as you stated you CAN wash them, yet most people I know who have them, don't. I want to dread my hair, or at least some of it...but the dirtyness to me is a big disadvantage.

TBH when White People have that honey/clay/not natural thing going on I judge super hard. Do I go up and say anything? No, because that's rude, but as a Woman of Color I get upset? Jealous? Because White Hair is so acceptable and unless I want to spend what can be exorbitant amounts of money in processing it I have so few natural options.

I have dreads, and people judge me for them, been told all sorts of things, like "They're not professional." or "You look like a radical."

Are mine dirty? No, I wash them on the regular, they locked naturally. And for some Locks are an avenue of self expression, personally mine are about how done I am processing my hair to fit someone else's ideal of me.

They can be either.
At some point during the summer when me and my friend were 9, her hair clumped into a bunch of mats from being dirty and having lice. That was not self expression, it was icky poopoo.
However, I know people who clean their dreads. I know people who intentionally got dreads and remained hygienic in the process. So that's just another hairstyle.

I think they're beautiful.
Find it very rude when people say they are disgusting, they are only disgusting and unhygienic if the person who has them isn't taking good care of them -> Just like ANY other hairstyle.
Race shouldn't matter. anyone should be able to have them. I'm not white but I also find it rude when white people get "crapped" on so much for having them. I'm native american yet people judge less when someone of my race decides to get them.. what a world.
People will do what they want with their hair or body whether or not we agree with it.
We just need to stop worrying about what other people are doing with themselves and worry about ourselves I guess. [:

Having had dreadlocks in the past, I can tell you that they aren't a 'lazy-way-out' sort of thing. I actually had to spend about twice as much time taking care of them as I did with my regular hair. I had to wash them far more often, back-comb them daily, and go through all sorts of trouble just to have them. When taken care of properly, they are often cleaner than normal hair.
I still don't know why I ever thought they were a good idea, though - even properly cleaned ones look, in my opinion, pretty gross. However, there's a difference between looking gross and actually being gross.

I love dreads! They generally seem to me to be a statement by people who have an artistic bent. I've never thought of them as dirty or clean. I guess there's both. just like in the non-dread population.

I don't know how I'd feel if I needed to have an operation and my surgeon rocked up with dreads. Maybe dreads are for the young and non-profession groups.

It's a hairstyle. It may or may not be sanitary depending on if you take care of it or not. It's not a work of art anymore than a ponytail is a work of art. this is art. Dreadlocks are dreadlocks.

On that note, I love dreads.

^Second (or would that be third?) this.

And really it just depends on how they're taken care of. If hair is taken properly care of, they can be awesome to look at, and if they are neglected, they're going to look... well, gross. I wouldn't say they're a "work of art" - just another way to express oneself if they so wish, just like any other hairstyle.

I have no idea whether they are clean or not but they look dirty. And when I see someone with dreadlocks, I just imagine hair that hasn't been cleaned well for a long time and it grosses me out. Perhaps I'm a little OCD about clean hair. Whether it's justified or not, this is just my reaction to them. I could never touch them personally.

BUT, I would never show this to anyone that has dreadlocks. Because I realize that it's probably just my perception. And people should wear them if they want to.

Midwest, here with my locks I've been asked if I'm part of the New Black Panther Party.

I've also been told that my hair was unprofessional and childish, when I explained that my natural texture was actually very thick I would just have an afro I was told that was equally unacceptable for most office environments.

Done right and given the proper care, Dreads can look awesome. But it's a commitment. If a person can't dedicate the time to keep them up, then it's just a mess.

Though I would never get them (too lazy to take care of them), I love dreads. Yeah, they can be a right pain to take care of, so I'm told at least, they can look great when done well. Ultimately, though, it's the person's choice whether or not to get them, and take care of them from then.

Quite honestly, I just don't like dreadlocks as a STYLE. Not because I think they're unhygenic or whatever, I just don't like them. But I have seen some people do it right, and people who look great with them, and I have no problem telling them I like their hair the same as I would with any other person/hairstyle.

I personally love well-done dreads. I've seen dreads in professional workplaces as often as I have on the street, and have no problems with that. Properly done, they're as clean as any 'professional' wave, bob, or curl.

I am suspicious of hygiene standards. Many of them have been invented to sell beauty products. Those industries take advantage of and encourage our shallowness and squeamishness. Greasy hair is not a realistic danger compared to, say, choosing not to brush your teeth regularly.

@Miazaki

I know right? We black women have to add chemicals to our hair and process it to make it flat and crap because our natural hair isn't acceptable.

I would love to have an awesome Afro.

I find hair with gobs of product in it to be disgusting. Shellacked hair is not pretty to me. I have dreads. I keep them clean, I keep my scalp clean and I maintain them. I wear them pulled back at work. It's not a big deal until someone else makes a big deal out of it.

What @Lyude said and showed.

Dreadlocks can be great or they can be horrifying...
It comes down to the amount of care, I think.

You should always find out as much as you can about whatever you're about to get yourself into, before getting yourself into it.

I will never comment on anyone's appearance unless asked or unless it threatens me or other people (which is rarely if ever ). That's rude and none of my business.

This isn't a black and white issue. Dreads can be clean enough to lick, and dirty enough to try and escape their owner's head. Just like any other kind of hair.

Dreadlocks are a style, nothing more. How hygienic they are is based purely on how well you care for them. If you're a grubby slob and never shower, shampoo or condition your hair, then of course they're going to become rank and horrible. But if you're, y'know, clean and hygienic with your hair, then your hair will - shocker - be clean and hygienic!

You might not be able to drag a comb through dreadlocks, but you can still keep the damn things clean. They're no different to any other style when it comes to keeping fresh and proper. Simple as that.

I won't call anyone gross over it, but the few times I've ever seen dreads in real life they were matted, and just look gross.
It's an okay hairstyle for whoever wants them, I just would never get them..and I sort of dislike the way they look.

Honestly I think the main thing you're going to have to worry about is whether people claim appropriation and that dreadlocks are a spiritual hairstyle, especially associated with the Rastifari movement

(Me personally I just see it as a hairstyle. I think it's overreaching to put spiritual value on hair. If I offend anyone with that opinion, I'm sorry. But it's my opinion)

I have very little respect for anyone who comes up to strangers and tell them that they're ugly or disgusting based on how they look. I tried that a couple of times when I dyed my hair pink and blue. I was completely fine with the attention (it inevitably comes with the colors) but there are no reasons why people should be nasty towards you just because of that.
IMO as long as the person can keep their dreads clean, they're done properly/naturally done, I think it's a perfectly fine hairstyle. For some people it can even be the best choice if they want to have their hair long. It looks really good on some people actually
