BROTHERS 'TIL THE END.

I have until July 27th, so it's not like I'm wanting to be super buff in a week's time.
I just need to get ready for a white water rafting trip. I've been twice before, but we stepped up the level this time and my friend told me that if I was worried about not feeling prepared enough, then I should try and get in better shape.
I definitely have been needing to step it up and get a little healthier. I'm only a little over average weight for my size, but it still bothers me.
As far as a few steps I've taken since I was told, I've started drinking lots of water and taking vitamins, but I haven't been very consistent with dieting or exercises.
x:

So, any help that you can provide, I would appreciate a ton.

Well, I can not promise you anything. But I can tell you how I exercise. I like to walk thirty minutes, lift weights a little bit until my arms are tired, and I do about a hundred crunches. I do it every other day. It sounds like a lot but after a while it does not seem like it. I hope I helped.

@SIMPLICIALITY

I don't know much about losing weight but what my mom did was she started eating in correct quantities. Like food pyramid quantities. To fill yourself you'll want to use a smaller plate. It really tricks your brain! c: Or you can just watch your calorie intake and whatnot. Drinks LOTS of water as well. Orange juice and just plain regular (preferably organic) juice would do as well if you don't like water (I know my mom doesn't).

For a workout. My mom walked for about an hour around her whole work building on her lunch break. To kill the time she had her iPod with her. Be sure you dress comfortably when you work out and well... right for the weather if you are going to walk outside. When we go to the gym, we usually walk on the treadmill for an hour. She also has 7lb weights in the house that she lifts until her arms are tired twice a day. She also does as many crunches as she can handle. She counts as she does them too. I swear she was up to 500 at some point before she stopped because of surgery.

I usually like to tone up the little belly fat girls have at the bottom of their stomachs (that's completely normal, it's used for pregnancy). But since I'm young and I don't need to fatten up for children. I usually do yoga. Yoga is really good for tightening up places. Zumba on the other hand, will keep you in shape. It's REALLY fun. It's basically dancing. There are probably places that do Zumba around where you live, if not you can probably pick up some tapes for it or get something on Youtube.

Lastly, get someone to do it with you or at least to motivate you. I was a partner for my mom because I pushed her to do her best and I still do! Hopefully someone will support you in what you're trying to do because I think it's great and it'll make you feel better about yourself. Believe it or not, the more healthy you are, the happier you are. You'll look great, trust me. I believe you can do it. c:

And July 27th is my birthday, ironic right? Haha.

Wow. That sounds so boss. (:
Thank you for the advice. I will definitely start walking and lifting weights probably crunches too.

@Opalia
Oh man, I didn't know Orange juice also worked. Or that the little "pudge" at the bottom of my belly is supposed to be for pregnancy. That's awesome. xD Your mom sounds really epic and determined.
Zumba looks like so much fun. *o*
I don't think we have classes around here but that would be so cool!
And @Epinephrine should totes be my exercise buddy c:

Like others have said, water is amazing. It flushes you out. You'll notice you'll have less break-outs, your skin will feel better, it's all-around good for you. Tea, as well. I eat vegetables with dinner every night. Bananas or granola bars for breakfast.
Get rid of soda and sugar. People don't realize how bad sugar really is. I'm not saying you have to give them up forever and ever...it's pretty impossible for a lot of people, but keep in mind everything in moderation.
Walking and bike riding are two of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to lose some weight. Go out with a friend, and it will seem less like work and more like just hanging out
Hope this helps, at least a little bit

Hello! I'm quite a fitness/health enthusiast, so I may be able to help. For exercise I would do 30 minutes of cardio a day, mainly because that's what is recommended for everyone to stay nice and healthy. Then, on top of that, have a weight lifting regimen. I prefer using Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred (I skip the cardio parts). I know Blogilates on Youtube has some workouts you can do, and of course searching around Youtube for at home strength training should yield good results.

For diet, I know someone suggested juice. Please, please, please, make sure you check the nutrition label of your juice. Some fruit juices contain more sugar than soda! Since I don't drink juice, I can't give you the stats on how many grams of sugar should be in there, but (I found this off of the Dr. Pepper website) in 20 ounces of Dr. Pepper there is 64g of sugar. Roughly 26 grams of sugar per 8 ounces (the general serving size of fruit juices.) Please make sure your juice is not around that in terms of sugar. You don't want to give up sodas for something just as sinister in terms of sugar.

If you don't like water, but love orange juice, instead of getting orange juice why not just chop up a couple of oranges, put them and water in a pitcher and let it "soak" for a while. You'll have naturally orange flavored water. Much better for you than Minute Maid.

And of course, load up on lean proteins (turkey, chicken fish, beans, whey protein isolate), veggies and fruits. And, of course, treat yourself to that chocolate every now and then. You're getting in shape, not dead. c: Enjoy it while you can.

Well you do need some consistency in your diet and exercise. I'm not a huge morning food person, but I am against vitamin pills. So I drink kefir yogurt and an organic fruit and veg drink called Green Goodness. They supply me with a good nutritional start to the day, plus my stomach feels full.

@SIMPLICIALITY Hello! ^^ I just can tell you what I did. and I lost 22lbs from January until now. Without hard exercise.
The trick is to let go of food with too much fat. Or things with too many calories.
I made a mix out of eating the half (really hard the first Month and added drinking more water, healthy stuff.)

For example: I ate mortadella, fat cheese and noodles with lot of fat in the sauce. Drank cappuchino (sometimes with cocoa). And sweets.

I left all the stuff alone from one day to another. Stopped smoking afterwards and stopped drinking real coke and eating too many sweets (and ice cream).
If I'm hungry for sweet things I eat Apples or drink diet coke (not often). Or drink normal coffee with a bit sugar.

The trick is: You may eat what you like (not everything of course XD), but not too much. And you have to look on the calories/fat on the package.
I do not count calories but by reducing fat and eating, living healthier it's okay.
Oh and walking instead of driving or riding bike.

What I did in the beginning had been that I ate at weekend what I wanted, Ice cream or one piece of cake. It's important so that your body doesn't get the jojo!
You habve to eat in order to loose weight.

One thing you can't handle with this is belly fat (sadly) there you have to make sit ups (which I am too lazy for as well but I need to do it, too. XD)

This should function I guess. Every body is different, so you have to try, but this is a healthy way doing it. ^^

@Stephanieli4
Oh man, this blog is helping a ton. I opened it up on a picture that listed the main exercises to work different parts of the body. I tried the Bird Dog position and it really worked my back and abs. Thank you so much!

@tiffany
I've been drinking tons of water. I think keeping a bottle of water always around me helps a ton.
And speaking of bike riding, a local charity is having this thing where if you donate $50 or more, you can get a nice bike. It's a pretty sweet deal. I actually did that today and got a nice orange one.
Thank you!

@Epinephrine
Nu.
How much is it?
o:

@Imsya
Yes, my friend Christina told me I should try looking up exercise videos on youtube. I was trying to get a copy of P90X from a diff friend, but I think they forgot. :c
Oh, I'll be sure to check the Nutrition Facts on the juices. I like to drink "Naked" juice. c:
You said Whey works? I've been wondering this for a while. My brother used to use it back when he was trying to slim up, but he also added on a rigorous exercise with it and some kind of dieting pill so I wasn't sure if it worked or if it was all the exercise. I've got some he left me.
Thank you!

@Faruzah
That's a pretty good idea. If you don't mind me asking though, why are you opposed to vitamins? o:

@ArcadiasDreams
Congratulations!
That sounds like a really good plan with rewarding yourself on the weekend, I might try that. (:
Thank you!

Personally, they either make me vomit or give me nose bleeds. And generally the human body absorbs nutrients far better from the food we eat rather than in pill form.

Whey Protein is pretty must just straight protein, so you don't get all the fats from meat and stuff. It's good if you drink it within an hour of finishing your weight training. Pretty much drinking it after weight training helps recovery time, and gives muscles their building blocks so you won't be so sore, or not as as sore for a shorter amount of time. It doesn't really matter if you're taking a diet pill or on a rigorous exercise regimen. But I would recommend only drinking it if you're weight training, otherwise it won't do much. I hope this helps! Good luck on your river rafting. I wish I could go. :c

Oh wow. Whenever I first started to try and take them, I would get really sick and sometimes vomit afterward too, that was with "One a Day: Teen Advantage". So, I quit until recently. I bought a different brand, hoping it would be different and it worked! (:

@Imsya
Well then I'll definitely start mixing it in. (: I mean, I'm doing a little weight training so. Thank you! You should sometimes, it's a really good and fun workout. It's also super affordable if you get a fairly large group of friends to all chip in. For us though, since we only have four people, it wound up being kind of high. We each payed $210. But it's still fairly cheap considering that we're getting a cabin for 4 days and booking the rafting part.

Hey. c:

Don't know if you still want tips, but I thought I'd add some anyway. c:

Smaller portions really help. Most restaurants I've been to, and even just dinner at home, often have larger portion sizes than necessary. Portion control is a big factor that can really help in losing weight if you don't eat as much. You still need enough though!

You should ensure you get all nutrients you need, so do refer to food pyramids to see how much of something you need, like protein or fibre. You shouldn't completely abandon fats, just cut a lot of carbs out. When you're hungry, try snacking on nuts; they fill you up quickly and are often a good source of magnesium. Almonds are good for lowering your cholesterol level.

Cardio exercise is good for losing weight. Crunches are popular as you can do them at home easily, and there're different kinds for different parts of your waist. Swimming is also a super good exercise as you're using all of your muscles.

I think a lot of other stuff has been mentioned. Just stay healthy and don't go overboard with a diet. It should be a healthy lifestyle change, nothing drastic. Good luck!

I never really did things the way that anyone else who gave you advice did (I actually have a high-carb, high-fat diet due to my regimen), but I'll give you some advice based on what worked for me. c':

Like I said, I'm on a high-fat, high-carb diet; I've come to learn that it doesn't matter how much you're eating, as long as you're eating the right foods. Preservatives and excess sodium can pretty much put a big, fat (no pun intended) wedge in even the best exercise plan. You'll want to limit your grains (health freaks tell you to eat arseloads of them, but the truth is that they're just as bad as preservatives) and sugars, and replace them with vegetables and meats. Personally, I don't really eat meat other than chicken and fish because I have a digestive problem, but you can literally eat whatever, as long as it's prepared well. (: Water really is your saviour - it helps ward off cravings for junk foods throughout the week, and keeps you healthy. I'm a firm believer in the 'cheat day' - taking one day out of the week to eat whatever the hell you want, and as much of it as you can handle. It's proven to help ward off cravings for the rest of the week, because you're telling yourself 'hey, it's okay to eat poorly' for one day a week. Just don't turn it into a 'cheat weekend', or it can become a problem! It also doesn't matter if you don't count calories, since your body will let you know if you need to eat a little more - listen to it, but eat the right foods.

If you're looking to tone up quick without crazy commitment, I'd recommend a 'short and fast' routine; several short but very intense workouts, four or five days a week. I'm talking like 45 minutes, tops. If you do a bit of cardio (running, skipping, biking...) to warm up, then immediately get into high-impact workouts (I'm also a diehard fan of Jillian's 30 Day Shred), you'll see results sooner, and more effectively.

If you're into strength-building (not just toning), the key is to push your body. If you can comfortably lift 10lbs but struggle a little to lift 20 - do it anyways. Pick up those 20s and work your butt off. Just... don't try to jump from 10 to 50. Ouch. ): If you make tiny steps up (5lbs > 10lbs > 15lbs...) you aren't really working the muscle. You're just keeping it moving. You're not really getting any benefit.
If you're more inclined to do cardio, then faster and harder is the way to go. Push yourself. Run twice as fast as you normally do for about 10minutes. Skip rope with ankle weights attached. Bike up steep hills. You have to really work a muscle to get it to respond.

Here's the important part: if you don't want to do the exercise, simply don't do it. If lifting weights doesn't interest you, don't do it. If you don't want to run on a treadmill, don't do it. Find alternatives. But it's important to keep pushing yourself. (:

This is what I've been doing for two months, and I've lost about 30lbs in fat. Another thing is to not get hung up on numbers on a scale. While you're losing fat, you're gaining muscle. Being obsessed with a number just sabotages your fitness plan. The important thing is to gauge everything according to how you feel about yourself! If you feel good, and like what's happening, then keep on it! ♥

TL;DR Eat 'real' foods, have short & intense workouts, and reward yourself once a week!

Drinking lots of water is a good start, drinking 64 oz a day helps kick start fat burning and muscle building. c:
You'll probably need a mix of cardio and muscle strength to do rafting, so i'd think yoga or weight lifting, and running would do the trick! If you're not the running type, there's a horrible thing called a Tabata that should help you with both muscle strength and cardio.
TABATA TABATA TABATA

And as for dieting, you don't really need to go extreme to lose weight and get fit. A HUGE help is not drinking things with sugar, and i know water gets boring, so i usually add Crystal Light Pure, because i don't like aspertame either. X)
Stay away from high fat, and overly processed food, and not eating red meat usually helps too. If you eat meat, try to stick with lean meats, like chicken or turkey. That's pretty much all i can think of, if i didn't explain something very well and you didn't understand it, just ping me.

Have you ever looked into a high-intensity program like the Insanity workout series? A strong cardio/interval plan sounds like it might be just what you need if you want to get in shape quickly!

My boyfriend and I plan on doing it, the program costs $100 though. BUT we managed to find and download it (illegally) online for free. I'm not sure what the link is since he found it, but it is do-able. Either that or Youtube the Insanity workout and perhaps there will be episodes or excerpts from there. I've seen some of the before-and-afters from Insanity and they look CRAZY. Not sure if it's really effective or not since I have yet to try it, but a similar high-intensity daily program seems like it would be great for you (:

That and if you have a local gym see if they offer Zumba or Spin (biking) classes. They're about an hour-long and said to burn 500+ calories. Plus with Spin you're mostly using your legs and keeping your heart rate up so it's amazing cardio while working out your legs.

I find kick boxing to be a good method for exercising.
If there's a local gym around that provides a kick boxing class, sign up and give it a try.
I also recommend eating smaller portions and taking out all the unhealthy foods out of your fridge and replacing them with healthier choices (fruits, vegetables, fish, etc.).
I hope this helps, and good luck!

Hello everyone! I know I haven't posted on here in quite some time, but I had one last question..
How do you fit a workout into a busy schedule? Like if you're working a fulltime job every day, do you wake up early in the morning and do it then or after you get off of work?

I prefer to do my workout later in the evening (about an hour or so after dinner - you can have a snack after your workout if you feel you're hungry before bed!) - and because I typically only work out for 30-45min, it leaves me plenty of time to putter around afterwards if I'm not ready for bed (:

If you're more interested in jogging/predominately cardio, you could also do it first thing in the morning before work - heavier stuff like lifting/kickboxing/etc will likely leave you feeling noodley... c':

MORNING! Always in the morning. In my experience, after a long day of school/work I am in NO mood to workout in the afternoon and just want to eat, get into pajamas, and rest. You're more likely to use the "I'm tired" excuse at night or find ways to get out of it if you're dreading it all day. If you do it right when you wake up then you can go the whole day knowing that you already had a workout and you can just relax after work (:

If you're worried about showering in the morning taking too much time just put your hair in a bun or high ponytail when you shower so you don't have to worry about taking the time to wash/fix your hair before work, then just wash it later. It's proven that working out gives you an energy boost (plus a metabolism boost!) so you'll feel more productive and refreshed all day. So... tl;dr morning all the way, lol.

Thank you so much guys! I've actually started doing it in the morning, just waking up an hour earlier and starting as soon as I'm up. I've found that it not only helps me wake up a bit, but it also has allowed me to relax after work and still feel good about myself, as Blir suggested.

hey there, popping in this thread

I've been out of shape a lot lately and trying to do a little with what little energy and time I have
cardio/running-jogging is always good, but if you don't have a ton of time on your hands (like me) or you'd like to add more varied toning exercises, blogilates on youtube is a pretty good source, more than just stuff you can find on like about.com--exercise. She adds some funner stuff too c:

I also track the exercise tag on tumblr and I'll glance at stuff people have occasionally

I'm pretty busy myself, trying to juggle school, work, and my SO.
I like to go exercise after work, because i am completely not motivated to get up early and do it. c:
Adding it on after work a set few days a week can help work it into your routine, so you might not dread it so much.

This is definitely way after July 27th, but here you go:

I work out 5-6 days a week. I lift weights, I do cardio. I eat every 2-3 hours. I eat a large breakfast. I drink nothing but water (no soda, alcohol, etc.). I listen to my body and I take breaks if I am injured. I get plenty of sleep. I don't restrict myself from unhealthy food, I only let myself have it in moderation. If I screw up and eat a lot of unhealthy food or I decide to skip a workout, who cares. Life moves on, there's always tomorrow, and there's no room for guilt.

That's it. That's all it takes. No pills, no gimmicks, no magic, nothing. Just discipline, self control, and consistency.

I found it's way easier to stick to exercising if you take exercise classes. I scheduled it this semester so I have one every weekday. It's way more fun with a group of people, imo. I used to hate working out with other people around me, but now I hate working out by myself.

Also, don't workout and eat healthy just so you look good. Do it for your health. Do it so you aren't immobilized and paying out the butt for prescription meds when you're 50. Eat and drink healthy so your organs aren't toxic and worthless by the time you're 40. Lift weights to strengthen your bones, tendons, muscles, etc. Do cardio to strengthen your heart, lungs, muscles, and mind.

You only have one body and it's built to move and strengthen and to be pushed. Don't treat it as if it's disposable.

If you want more help with nutrition and exercise, take classes for it!! If you want to learn to appreciate your body and learn about all its functions, take an anatomy and physiology class.
