What is the Tier of a pet ... all of mine have one. How do you raise is and what does it do?

Edit:

I saw things about battling considering it ... is there a way to battle lower level creatures all my pets are too week for what I saw was available last time I tried

the easy challengers are designed for you not to need any training or any good weapons really. just buy what you can; all the weapons at tier 1 are cheap anyway. train your pet. stats > weapons
