Okay. So for ages I've been mistyping myself as either an INFP or an ISFP because I was going by just the letters. As it turns out, cognitive functions are the important thing. The letters tell you almost nothing and are terribly misleading; the functions are much more accurate and in-depth. FUNCTIONS FUNCTIONS FUNCTIONS.

I found this guy's youtube channel and it blew my mind. I'd looked up the functions before, but I hadn't realised how important they are, and how confusing it is to try to type yourself just by the letters.
(I also love his straight-talking style)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSNTdSSLauQ&feature=relmfu
(about why the letters are misleading)

Here's the video that convinced me about my own type:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wAlL99vDn4&feature=relmfu
(differences between INFP and INFJ ... turns out that while they're one letter apart, they use a completely different stack of functions)

So CC: Do you know what your type is? Have you been mistyped for ages and are you now trying to figure out what you really are? Post your types and we'll ramble on about them!
(wikipedia lists the function stacks of each type if you don't know yours yet ... just search google for "wiki [type]")

P.S. I'm an INFJ. I know this post probably doesn't make me sound like one, but I'm really excited about this and it's really late at night. Chalk it up to mimicking other types.

P.P.S. I'm sorry if this sounds like an aggressive self-help seminar!! I don't mean it that way at all. I mean it as "hey I found some interesting stuff that I found helpful, come check it out if you want to."

I'm an ENFP
I haven't watched the videos you posted yet but I've done the online test and the personality info seems to match

@Expert_Fieldmouse
I've taken those online tests for fun a few times. I pretty much always get something different other than the Introverted part. I watched a few of those videos and that just made it even more confusing for me. Lol. I think the last time I took one I was INFJ or INFP. Not sure which.

Introvert(56%) Sensing(12%) Thinking(25%) Perceiving(22%)

But honestly I just took it for fun, I don't really give a damn about these kind of things xD

I'm ISFJ, well at least that's what I have bookmarked hah. In some ways it sounds like me, but in others not so much.

@Gravity
Yeah, it is all very confusing =/ I hope they come up with a more streamlined system, or at least clearer explanations of this one.

@Anasazi
I think the best way is to learn the different functions. Unfortunately there aren't very many concise explanations out there =/
Another way is to just read descriptions for each type. One thing that can be helpful is to look up MBTI charts of characters from movies, shows, books, etc. There's an MLP one, haha. >link<

@Pixiel
I wish I could be like you. I can't stand not knowing x__x And even though INFJ seems to fit, I still have nagging doubts, haha. Basically I want to understand this whole theory inside and out, and it's not as easy as I had hoped it would be.

idk, the personality type tests are horrible to do. they kind of bore me
but I've had to take some for school and I did the online one, and each time I have been INFJ I think. I have no idea if I've been miss-typed, but the description fits me pretty well.

I always test as an INTJ and I think it suits me quite well. I like these sorts of tests; you get to know yourself a little bit better whenever you take them.

Well I always test as INTP, and even after comparing/contrasting similar types and reading up on functions (now and in the past), I have to say it's the best fit. Anyway, useful post for those interested in MBTI.

I'm glad the tests work for most of you guys! I dunno, I've always found them very frustrating and misleading. Basically, everyone uses thinking and feeling, intuition and sensing, but in different ways. The tests almost make it sound like you have to choose one or the other, and they don't explain how thinking, for example, can be used differently by different "thinking types."

@mangoes
INFJ is:
Dominant introverted intuition (Ni)
Auxiliary extraverted feeling (Fe)
Tertiary introverted thinking (Ti)
Inferior extraverted sensing (Se)

Here's a summary of the stuff I've been learning about this type and my understanding so far:

Basically INFJs like to see patterns and metaphors, and they look for the truth; the Ni means that they practice convergent thinking (taking a bunch of ideas and information and condensing them it into one idea). Intuiting, as I understand it, is mostly about looking for patterns; Ni looks for patterns amongst the thoughts already in your head,anylooks for patterns in the things you're seeing around you in the present.anythoughts are more likely to start in one place and then jump all over to a completely unrelated place, and Ni thoughts are more likely to stay on one specific track (for a while. I get bored easily, I'm sure you do too).
The Fe means that you like connecting emotionally with other people, and you tend to soak up their emotions. If your friend is sad, you become sad. If your friend is sad, you will become sad by association, and you will be more likely to try to cheer them up (partly so you won't be sad anymore). Fi users tend to go inside and gauge their own feelings more often, and they tend to be less affected by someone else's mood.
Ti means that you tend to go inside yourself to think; you need quiet to remember things (think of Sherlock yelling "everybody shut up, I'm trying to think") and you tend to want to be precise when you voice your thoughts. When Ti users talk, they tend to pause often, going inside their heads to retrieve the information and then making sure they voice it precisely. Te users tend to form their thoughts aloud as they go.
Se is one of the most confusing things for me because I still don't fully understand Si x_x Se basically pays attention to the outside world and reacts quickly to it. Si is more about remembering past experiences and judging current situations based on them, so Si users are usually less open to new experiences and more comfortable with tradition and rules in general. As the video mentions, Se users are more likely to be well coordinated and to enjoy living in the moment. That's not to say that INFJs aren't very spacey (which we certainly can be), because Se is our weakest function. We can be very present and aware of our surroundings, but we have to focus on doing that. Living in our heads, both in intuiting and thinking modes, comes more naturally.

The first post >here< gives the four different stacks and then lists which types fall into each. It's interesting to see how some types that are one letter apart are completely different in their functions, and others will all different letters share all the same functions.

I'm still not clear on how the functions interact with each other (they apparently follow a specific pattern) ... I need to read a few more articles. (it will be later though ... I'm pretty tired of researching this at the moment) x_x

(I feel like I've just been rambling, I hope this wasn't too confusing)

ISFJ

This seems pretty accurate to me, actually.

Apparently I am:

INTJ
Introvert(11%) iNtuitive(62%) iNtuitive Thinking(62%) Judging(11%)
-You have slight preference of Introversion over Extraversion (11%)
-You have distinctive preference of Intuition over Sensing (62%)
-You have distinctive preference of Thinking over Feeling (62%)
-You have slight preference of Judging over Perceiving (11%)

This was the first time that I had actually taken a personality test, so it was interesting to say the least.

Yeah, it's definitely interesting =) I was going crazy trying to find my type because I thought it might help me choose a field of study (I have literally no idea what I'm going to do when I get out of school), but it sounds like INFJs don't really have any guaranteed careers anyway x) I think it's also important to take it all with a grain of salt, though ... I'm sure any type can go into any career if they really love it.

yeah, it's not like everything's carved to stone just because you're an INFJ. :3 Psychology is one of the fields i'm seriously considering. i still have a couple of years until i have to decide, but it's good to have SOME ideas where to apply next...

Psychology is pretty awesome =) I always found it fascinating but never got great marks in it, mostly because I couldn't memorise all the terms. I had a couple of really good teachers, though. (I wish they had tested more about general theories and the differences between them, I can yammer on about those)

Anyway, good luck!! I hope you have a great time with it C:

I've taken these tests several times and got either ISFP, or INFJ, or INFP.

I have a rather changing personality and I'm often "in the middle" when doing tests so it's not that surprising. I recognize myself in the 3 types according the moment. I don't think one can always be reduced to one type so I would "worry" less if I were you.

As for careers, there are quite a bunch here. Funny thing is that I really don't feel like doing any of the careers from the "disfavored careers" in the 3 types I'm supposed to fit, so I guess that can be of help when choosing what one doesn't want to do XD

@Tilcara
I think that in order for the MBTI system to be considered valid, it is supposed to be able to sort you into one type. Everyone in that type will be slightly different, but if a person was able to hop from one type to another, it would be a failure of the system. (And this is entirely possible! I'm just going from the assumption that the system is valid because it seems to work for so many people, and also because it just makes sense to me. If it's proven to be invalid someday, we'll just have to invent another system).

As for the careers, I agree that the disfavoured column can be helpful =) I definitely couldn't be an accountant.

@Expert_Fieldmouse

I totally agree with you. That's why I don't trust these tests. It should be a bit more complex than that.

edit : I've just redone the test, (which is this one) and I understand where is the problem. Here are my results :

Quote:
Introverted (I) 66.67% Extroverted (E) 33.33%
Sensing (S) 50% Intuitive (N) 50%
Thinking (T) 50% Feeling (F) 50%
Perceiving (P) 50% Judging (J) 50%

Your type is: INFJ

INFJ - "Author". Strong drive and enjoyment to help others. Complex personality. 1.5% of total population.

*If you tied on any of the scales, the current algorithm just breaks the tie randomly so refresh the page to see alternate results

Hence why I have different types. I guess "complex personality" suits me well, with 3 ties XD I guess it's just luck that I got only 3 results at taking 5 times the test.

So, I guess I should have a deeper look at functions. How does one know which is their dominant function ?

I'm INTP. Every test I've taken shows that and the results are accurate. It's hardly the test's fault if the taker doesn't bother looking into the results after. Also, there are variations on the test, and updated versions of the original. Some of the variations are more trustworthy than others.
