#midnight

The summer this year was sweltering, the sweat was starting to form on Alaeza's forehead. The sun was setting on the western horizon, twilight was filling the valley and the mountains across Meneb. The view was astonishing from the balconies at the Manor.
It was another thing though that she silently cursed. That once more, she was back in Meneb, being their Queen. It was beginning to feel as if this country couldn't function without her. She wiped the sweat from along her brow and took a deep breath, "I guess this is it." She didn't know if anyone that was on the balcony with her was listening but she kept talking anyways, hoping that Ren would answer, since she was going to be asking for his advice.

Never in her life did Alaeza think she'd look to a 16 year old for guidance, but the boy was forced into his position, just as she was. "Ren, do you think I should send out a message to all of the crew? Or do you think that it's pointless? There are so many different adventures out there, just waiting for us," for the first time in over six months, Alaeza's eyes showed a glimmer of hope, she turned to face Ren and Hrothgar. The two wolves that she took in, well, the one she took in and the one that brought her back.

The images were still running through her head. A year and a half had gone by since numerous events started unfolding with the crew. Part of her mind went along for that journey. It still felt like yesterday that she was waking up with her eyes still pitch black and low growls coming from her lips as she traversed the wilderness and she found something growling back at her, Hrothgar. His eyes were fierce in his wolf form, but when he shifted, she recognized him, slightly. Something triggered in her mind at least, she didn't know what though. He knew her scent because she still smelled like other wolves, wolves that he knew. His voice was more of snarl than anything else, accusing her of being reckless and what sounded to her like a challenge, but being caught wasn't something that she wanted. Alaeza darted off, thinking he wouldn't be able to catch her. A scream of surprise came from her mouth though when a snout grabbed her leg, pulling it out from under her but not injuring her. "You're going back to where you belong," the voice said before her eyes adjusted.
If only it was known that she didn't want to go back. Fighting tooth and nail for freedom was the only thing that was going through her mind, she was going at him. Once more, something clicking in her for how to attack. It wasn't easy though. When they weren't in motion, he kept her tied up so she couldn't escape. The journey back to the Arctic would take a few days, Alaeza had traveled far into the forests, to where most humans wouldn't travel. Hrothgar could tell she didn't want to go after the first twelve hours traveling. He found it was easier to keep her wrists bound and he guided her. If he took wolf form, he knew she would run.
After two and a half days, he saw the cottage that had the scent of a wolf coming from it. He banged on the door of the cottage and Ren was the one who answered it, "You lost this," the words were out of his mouth and pushing Alaeza towards Ren before she could protest. She looked rather bewildered. There were leaves and twigs stuck in her hair, and most of it was gone. One of the first things she had done was cut most of it off with a pocket knife, before she lost it. One eye was pitch black and the other was turquoise rimmed with gold.

A tear slid down her cheek but she didn't want to worry the boys right now. She changed the look on her face to something that looked slightly less grim. "I just don't know if we should... Shall we instead go eat?"

The sixteen year old remained by the balcony's doorway as the Queen seemed to stare out at the horizon. He was crouched down on the ground, silent and attentive. His green eyes just looking at her back, wondering what she was thinking. He was glad he wasn't in his wolf form as the climate of Darkside's summer would be torture. It was nothing like the cool Arctic at all and he was not fond of it at all. He was not fond of any of this really. Ryder's death had played a big part in the direction that Ren's life took. He wasn't the same obnoxious kid he use to be. He had matured a bit, or at least, he'd like to think so. He was still a troublemaker, but he knew when to be serious when he had to be.

After Ryder's death, Ren had returned to the Arctic from Atebus to be with his pack mates. However, that didn't last long as the teenager grew tired to being treated as an omega, a weakling. So he left the pack. For a teenager, surviving on his own was difficult. It wasn't any easier being a lone wolf. He was still young and the older members still hadn't taught Ren everything there was to hunting and surviving. And he refused to return to either of his parents as one parents was cold, and distant like a stranger while the other was strict and controlling. While Ren enjoyed his newfound freedom, even that couldn't last long. And it didn't. He remembered the day Hrothgar brought Alaeza to him. The boy had been living alone, using Ryder's old cottage as his temporary shelter. One day, there had been a knock on the door. The boy opened the door, surprised to see a familiar face. Before he could really say anything however, the Ji-Meneb was shoved through his door. The teen was confused as he looked onto the woman and then to the other wolf. "Capt'n Alae!," he exclaimed as he examined her. He could smell the scent of the forest on her as well as see the leaves and twigs stuck to her hair. He stared at the coloration of her eyes and then to Hrothgar, waiting for an explanation.

Ren snapped out of his memories and back to reality as Captain Alae finally spoke. Even though she was a Queen, he just kept calling her Captain Alae. The sixteen year old, who had been crouching, rised up as she addressed him. "Please do," the teenager almost immediately answered with excitement. "I'm bored. This place would be a whole lot more entertaining with the rest of the pack...I mean, crew," he corrected himself. He had came to see Alae as his new Alpha figure. Like Ryder had before, she had taken him in. While he appreciated it, this wasn't the kind of life he really wanted. It was something that had been forced upon him the day Hrothgar brought her to him.

"I think you should. I so miss Jack," he said with a hungry grin. "And yes! I'm starved," the boy patted his stomach at the mention of eating. He was a male teenager, and a wolf. He was always hungry.

Grish had spent all morning chasing Kalo around the manor for grooming. She was happy to go anywhere Alaeza and the crew went and settled down in Meneb for the time being. Managing to get a well-paying job working with big cats in a zoo, she was a lot more financially stable. Kalo also gained his weight back and managed to befriend Grish again a short while back.
"Kalo! I swear, if you don't come here for your bath, you won't get to play around with Aidan the next time!" Grish shouted down the hall. Kalo took surprisingly well to Aidan, and though Grish was happy he found a new friend, they were terribly destructive when unsupervised.

Bathing was a lot messier than cleaner, and after Grish tidied up, she decided to go to Brice's restaurant for dinner. It was nice to go see him every once in a while at work, especially if he was on break. Grish strode up to the counter with Kalo by her side, oblivious to the customers since her mind was thinking of a way to tell the news to Brice.

It had been quite a busy year and a half for Brice. He had grown bored in the Arctic. Having asked Alaza for a loan, he enrolled into Culinary school in Veta Lake. From relearning the basics to how to make the perfect chocolate souffle, he excelled at everything they threw at him. During that time he had also begun to date Grish, though the dates where few and far between he had been very happy with their relationship.

Now he stood in what only five months ago was an empty building. With another loan from his Captain, Brice had opened his own restaurant, naming it The Lions Den. Though business was steady he still couldn't afford more than a handful of staff.

This particular night was busy, he stood in the kitchen whisking an orange glaze for a customers meal. His Sous chef quickly took over and he moved on to plating the next thing as the waitress took it out. For now, every cog in this kitchen was turning nicely and he had a small break. He quickly stepped out the back door, taking the cigarette from his pocket and lighting it.

Alaeza smiled softly, "Then, for food shall we go see Brice at his restaurant or should we find something here to eat?" She was toying with the response that Ren had given about calling back the rest of the crew, "No eating the kitty cat. You know better." She tsked at him a bit, wagging a finger, but showing she wasn't upset.

As she walked inside, she heard something in her head but was trying to ignore it, so long she had gone without hearing voices in her head. Maybe they were finally going away, but apparently not, this voice sounded familiar though. They were asking Alaeza to help and that their parents needed her. All she could send back right now was, "Tell them to come to the manor. If you must, make it seem like a surprise." ((@Frieda)) At the same time she was pulling out her communicator, she headed towards her room, "I'll be out shortly. Decide what you boys want to do for dinner."

Alaeza heard Grish fussing at Kalo somewhere down below and she chuckled a bit, that lion was always going to be difficult for Grish to handle, but Alaeza found it entertaining because of how much love Grish contained for Kalo. Once in her room, she sat down on the edge of one of her steamer trunks and started writing out the message to the crew.

"It's been quite some time since several of us have gone off on to our own journeys. I feel though that the time has been too long. Currently, the ships are docked here in Meneb. If you want to travel once more, find missing things, or anything of that nature, please return. I miss the faces and friends and good times we have had as a crew. Also, for several of you, I have a job offer. With love, Alaeza." She sent it off once it was finished, hoping it found everyone easier than she could.

There were members of the crew that she was worried about and was hoping they would show, just to give her the feeling of ease to know they are still alive. She shook her head, trying to shake that feeling from her mind. She stood up and went into her wardrobe, finding something to change in to. As much as the summer was insanely hot, the temperature dropped 20-30 degrees once night fell, colds were something she caught easier since she went feral. She also knew the whispers that went through Meneb about it. The people were now finally starting to seem happier though. Meneb is getting better, the changes are all for the benefit of the country.

After changing into something warmer, she headed out of her room and down the stairs, looking to see where everyone in the manor had scampered off to.

Everybody knew Grish at the restaurant, so when the hostess came out to welcome her, she told her that she'd find Brice at the back. Grish thanked her and rushed out of the front entrance and around the building a second later. "Brice!" she shouted out to him and nearly tripped over several items carelessly thrown around the dumpster in the alley, but made it to him in one piece and gave him a hug. "Have you eaten yet? I'm starving; I came for dinner," she told him after greeting him, "Do you think you can spare a couple of minutes? I have something to tell you, too."

Brice happily hugged Grish, it had been a long day for him and seeing her smiling face made him feel better. "Yeah, lets get somethin real quick. It's been super busy tonight." He quickly put out his cigarette and kissed her forehead. Taking hold of her hand he headed back into the kitchen.

It had been a long and hard time for Moon. Though the first few months were spectacular, spending her time with Jai and being scouted for modeling. For a small moment she thought her life had reached a little bit of perfection. But, like it had before something had gone wrong. She had chose to stay by him when he attacked the crew. When Jai had fallen into his coma she spent her waking moments talking with him, waiting for his eyes to open.

It had been months now that she had been on her own searching for Jai. Her tireless efforts bringing her no closer than she had been before. She was sitting in a forest near Veta Lake, covered in mud and moss. The night before she had to leave her backpack, running from a bear she didn't feel like fighting. Moons golden eyes were surrounded by dark circles and her cheek bones where sunken in from lack of proper food. She was exhausted and hungry, but she would never give up her search for her beloved.

She had closed her eyes, sniffing the air, trying to find the scent she knew wouldn't be there. Something in her pocket vibrated, it was the message from Alae. She raised her mud caked fingers and rubbed her forehead. Seeing no other options she stood and messed with her teleporter. With a pop she was no longer in the deserted forest, standing now in front of Alaeza's Manor. She breathed in the familiar air with a sigh. "A shower and a proper nights rest won't be so bad...I can start again the morning." With another sigh she pushed open the front door.

So give me something to believe

'Cause I am living just to breathe

Ari had finished packing up her dorm two weeks ago, and had spent her time since then working high-end jobs for Saggitarius. She had to replenish her funds somehow after so long without working. And the cost of tuition last year. Eesh. She was just explaining for the hundredth time that Aidan was not for sale after delivering a terrarium full of gem-coated geckos (between her new knowledge of rare species and her previous work for him, she was his new black-market animal courier) when a strange device at her wrist began chiming. She broke off mid-sentence and held a finger up to the spoiled aristocrat, and he was so stunned that he actually stood there speechless while she read the message that scrolled across the small screen.

Looking up with a grin, she told him, "Something's come up. I'll contact you when I'm free to do some more work." And she turned and left, ignoring his indignant exclamations that he was the employer, not her, and she would never find work in Centropolis again, because how dare she treat him with such disrespect, etc. etc. She knew it was all hot-air, and he knew that she knew. She was too good at finding him whatever he could want, and at a good price. Right now, she had much more important things to think about. Like getting to the Darkside as fast as possible to see her friends.

Within the hour she had packed up some boxes and would come back for them once she knew where she'd be staying. Cuddling Aidan to her chest, she told him, "You'll get to see your Uncle Kalo soon. Aren't you excited?" He chirped his approval at this idea. Ari smiled as she put in some coordinates she'd looked up online. Suddenly they stood just outside Alaeza's mansion of a house. She set Aidan down and went and knocked on the front door. Aidan, who had gone from the size of a kitten to that of a grown cat in a year and a half, followed.

Grish sat by the wall away from the other customers so she nor Kalo would bother them. She munched away at her meal and ordered a rare steak for Kalo. "Did you notice how well groomed Kalo is tonight? He's got a big meeting tomorrow with some specialists," she mumbled through the food and fed Kalo a piece of that steak, "That's what I've been wanting to tell you. The people at the zoo were always so awed how well-trained Kalo is. He's almost like a house cat. At least, to me he is. These specialists are coming tomorrow to see it for themselves, so I gave Kalo his long overdue bath." Grish made a face at Kalo as she ate, "You're horrible when it comes to bathing."

She set down the money for the bill and tip on the table. "I don't know how long this meeting will take, but I hope it doesn't mess up my schedule too much. I don't know, maybe studying Kalo with me will help them in their research or something," she said brightly.

Brice sipped on water as Grish talked about Kalo, "Well he is a special cat, though I don't know how much they'd learn from him. I mean, yea I don't know many lions but, I don't think they all act that way." He pushed her money back at her, "sweetie, how many times do we have to do this, you don't have to pay." He twirled some spaghetti around on his fork before taking a bite. "I'm happy for ya, I'm sure Kalo wouldn't mind some new friends. Where was this zoo again?"

Lady Frieda Von Steuben

Lieutenant Colonel Weldon George (Ret.)

Aya adjusted the goggles on over her eyes, scrutinized at the device in her paw,and hesitated briefly before she pushed the 'Engage' key. "Aunti Alaeza, I'm a little nervous, I have never 'jumped' before. Don't be mad if Mommy and Daddy don't come right away. Anyway, I'm on my way, alone...here goes!" She pressed the key and cold enveloped her for only a fraction of a second. But in that time, she was suddenly aware of her whole timeline, though she couldn't make out any of the details. She was reminded of being in a clock shop at the strike of midday. When she poofed, she was pleased to see that she had arrived safely, just as Alaeza had come down to see where the rest of the crew had run off to, precisely at the bottom of the stairs of the great manor, looking up into the eyes of Queen Alaeza. Aya shook excitedly, bowed low to her knee as she had been taught and spoke haltingly and thickly, "My Queen." That was all she uttered verbally, she had practiced saying it over and over so that she wouldn't stumble on the words and embarrass herself. She knew she had to acknowledge Alaeza's royalty verbally, because she herself was of royal lineage, and if the legend became truth, and her mother exhaulted to her rightful place in their culture, then she, 'Lady Aya' would also be heir to a throne. And so, Aya knew that protocol demanded these introductory displays of pomp, but inside of her young mind she bubbled out, "Auntie! I made it!

"Darn," Ren replied with a smile, snapping his fingers. The idea of eating Jack was entertaining, but of course, Ren would never really do it. For starters, that would be gross. Cats weren't exactly part of a werewolf's diet. They were far too small and there weren't a lot of them just running around in the Arctic. Secondly, Jack was a familiar. Ren didn't know a whole lot about the world of magic, but surely eating something magical would have repercussions. As the Queen disappeared, he looked to Hrothgar, his smile having now disappeared. "She'll be alright, right?," Ren asked, looking for reassurance. Though she had given him a soft smile, he knew she was unhappy. She wasn't a werewolf, but she was like him. Inside of her was something feral and could not be tamed. Being here was like being trapped in a cage.

The teenager sighed before turning away from the older werewolf and walking to the edge of the balcony. The young man then leaped over the railing, allowing himself to fall down to the ground below. He landed on his hands and feet, of course. He dusted off his hands when he stood up. He then turned to make his way to the front entrance where he saw someone at the door. With her was a small gryphon. "Ari," the boy greeted the woman from behind as he watched her knock on the door. "You're here! Captain Alae will be thrilled," he said and ran to open the door for her knowing it was not locked. He held the door open for her to let her and Aidan in. Ren was enthusiastic at the sight of new company. Plus, he would now have Aidan to prey upon play with. Overall, more people equal less boredom. "You came in time. We were about to go get something to eat at Brice's." His head then turned as he finally noticed that he and Ari weren't the only one there. For a werewolf, Ren was still a bit untrained in using his senses to their potential.

Ari jumped when she heard her name called from behind her. She turned and saw Ren, the young werewolf that now stayed with Alaeza. She grinned and laughed as he opened the door, teasing, "Geez, have you gotten taller?" Food sounded good, doubly so if it was from The Lion's Den. Then she looked around. It looked like she wasn't the first one here, though she hadn't expected to be. Alaeza stood over by the stair, facing a weasel. Not Freddie, but one of her pups maybe? it was strange to think that they would be all grown up already. And just inside the door stood a bedragled figure that Ari didn't recognize, though there was something about them that she couldn't put her finger on.

Aidan, for his part, looked around as soon as the door was open. And when he saw the bedraggled figure standing right by the door, he bolted for it with a happy chirp. Moon still smelled like Moon, if a little worse for wear. He started weaving in and out of her legs, purring.

Ari saw this, thinking about who all it might be for Aidan to react quite this happily. She stepped forward hesitantly, with an incredulous look on her face. "...Moon?"

Grish picked up a portion of the money on the table but left the rest, "For the waitress, then," she said stubbornly. Grish handed Kalo the last piece of steak and watched him happily. "I know he's special, and that's probably why they want to study him. Scientists like unusual things," she giggled. "They're coming by to the one here in Meneb where I work. Boy, that's going to feel weird having people watch me."

Moon looked down as the gryphon encircled her feet, bending over she scooped up the animal and kissed his beak. "Nice to see you too sweetie, you've gotten bigger." She blinked when her name was called, "Yeah, Hi Ari...Ren." Her voice was strained and tired. "How have you been?" She stepped over and joined the small group.

Brice laughed, "Lydia will be happy then." He waved at a customer who was a regular, "You tell me if they do anything weird or mean to him. Kalo's had a tough life...he needs some easy livin." He laughed, "Grish, sweetie, people always look at you...specially when you do your derpy things."

"Oh, Moon! You look like you've been through hell and back... Which now that I think about it, I bet you have." She smiled a little awkwardly, not really knowing what to say in a situation like this. She did reach up and start grooming her friend, pulling leaves and sticks out of her hair and trying to rub the dirt from her face. Just a small effort to show how much she cared and wanted to help. Aidan picked up on Ari's anxiety and Moon's weariness. He tilted his head and chirped questioningly. What was wrong? Why did Auntie Moon seem so sad?

Moon laughed at Ari's comment, "It's not so bad, just need a shower." She smiled at Ari as she fussed over her. "So what have you two been up to? Your both looking well, this lil fella's gotten much bigger." She nuzzled Aiden, getting some dirt on him. "Whoops, sorry sweetie." She tried dusting off the dirt.

"School's been good. It's nice to know what I want to do with my life. It just took twenty-five years. Aidan loves all the attention the professors and other students give him, of course." She giggled to see Moon worry about a little dirt on Aidan considering the state she was in. "Don't worry about him, he could use a bath anyway." Aidan let out a "squaw" of despair at this, and wriggled out of Moon's arms to run and find someplace to hide. "Oh shoot, now I won't be able to find him until he gets hungry. Me and my big mouth." Ari said with a facepalm. "Oh well. Wanna go see what Alae has planned for us?"

Moon laughed, "Thats good, I'm nearly 700 and I still..." She cleared her throat, "Of course he would, such a darling." She watched as he skittered away, "You can always bathe him after he is fed. Yeah, lets go up and see what she wants. Looks like someone is with her, let's see whats up." She managed a small smile and headed towards the stairs.

The temperature of Meneb was finally dropping as the sun started to disappear over the horizon. But if the drastic change in temperature meant anything to the cloaked traveler, they did not show it.

"I don't like this." A male voice came from under the cloak. "It's too close to Shadowglen."

"It isn't." A female voice said from under the same cloak. "Besides, they wouldn't dare cause trouble here."

"Yet you still don't dare ride your broom."

The figure threw back the hood of the cloak, revealing a rather pretty young woman with blue hair and a black cat lounging on her shoulders. "Unnecessary attention Jack, the last thing we need. They might not come here, but word would certainly spread." She looked at the broom she had slung over her shoulder. It would be nice to feel the wind again.

"We should have come sooner." Jack said, his eyes scanning the Shadowglen landscape.

Jypsie just snorted. It had taken the pair a long time to get to Meneb. Much longer than necessary, but all the technology she had acquired over the years had been stripped of her by the coven. She had at least managed to hid her broom and spellbook before they got her, they would have been burned along with the rest.

No, it was no use thinking back on that. She was stronger now, more powerful. Before this would have been the fullest eclipse of her magic, when she would have shut herself out from the world due to fatigue and depression. But her magic hummed within her as strong as midwinter. She still had much to learn of course, but she was no longer helpless due to the summer heat.

"I think I might be close enough now." She said as she smoothly slid down an embankment. She closed her eyes to concentrate on a magic she was not well practiced with. Telepathy was not taught by the coven after all.

Alae? Are you there? It's Jypsie.

And Jack too!

Hush! Alae. We are in Meneb, we were hoping to come see you. We...
She struggled to find the right words to explain their situation. Don't have any other form of contact right now. She really hoped she was doing this right and that their old friend would be willing to shelter them for a little while.

"Trust me, I'm not going to let Kalo out of my sight," she said while scratching Kalo behind one ear. "A-and I'm not that derpy!" Grish shouted back while trying to hide her blushing, and then mumbling quietly, "... most of the time."

Aya felt eyes on her and the presence of her other 'auntie' and she smiled shyly, "Hello Auntie Moon, remember me, it's Aya! Mommy and Daddy didn't come with me, I came all by myself! I thought it was time I had an adventure!" She glanced over at Ari, blushed, smiled, and bowed, "Hello." she paused for a moment and spoke in her mind, "I am Aya Von Steuben, my Mommy is Lady Frieda and my Father is Lieutenant Colonel Weldon George. Do you know them? What is your name? I am mostly all grown up. I'm almost two years old!"

So give me something to believe

'Cause I am living just to breathe

Ari followed Moon to the base of the stairs where she stood a little awkwardly, not knowing what to do. When the weasel girl spoke, she smiled and bowed her head in return. "Hello." She was just thinking what a sweet little thing she was, when words started sounding in Ari's head. They were in the weasel girl's voice, but clearer, somehow. She was surprised, but not terribly. Freddie was bound to have special and talented pups. With a grin, she waited for Aya to finish and answered, "A pleasure to meet you Aya. I know your parents a little; more so your mom. My name's Ari."

And I need something more to keep on breathing for

Aya beamed and opened her mouth, but no words came out. She blushed again, stuck out her paw to Ari and smiled sheepishly, "I am so glad to meet you, Ari. Please forgive me for startling you. I will think quieter. You are very pretty! What is the creature I smell? Does it eat weasel-girls?" She blinked heavily as a strand of hair fell into her eyes. "Maybe I should also find out where the food is, "

Ari took Aya's paw and squeezed it gently. "No need, I was just not expecting you to be telepathic." She blushed herself at being called pretty. Her instinct was to argue, but she'd learned years ago that denying compliments was a wasted effort. Eager to change the subject, she explained, "You must mean Aidan. He's a gryphon I'm taking care of. He's still just a little tyke, you see. And don't worry, he only eats fish and grains. As for food, I believe Ren mentioned getting dinner at Brice's restaurant."

A loud rumble emanated from Aya's abdomen and Aya put her paw to her mouth with a look of surprise. The sweetest, most musical giggle bubbled out, "Tummy talk...." she giggled again, "Aiden, a gryphon? We have no such creatures on Terra. I'm sure there are many different creatures on this world, that's part of the reason I wanted to come here. I will not be afraid of Aiden then." She cocked her head and opened her mouth to ask a question, but when no word came out, she smiled and her eyes glistened up, "Telepathic? I don't understand the word, but I will try to learn what that means. There are not that many who can hear me other then my family and my godmothers. Many folk on Terra called me 'Lady Frieda's little mute one.' Master Healer, Harriet the Wise, called me 'The Littlest One' but nobody called me 'Telepathic.' When I passed by Grade II Healer's challenge, folk then called me 'Healer Aya.' Daddy calls me 'Freddie Jr.' Oops, I cry..." Mentioning her father, whom she adored, caused her to suddenly realize what she had embarked upon. She was 'lightyears' away from her home world, out on her own for the first time, and suddenly homesick. She burst silently into tears, buried her face in her paws and shook with intense mute sobs. As her tears poured out and wet her paws, she felt a strength flow through her arms and shoulders, into her chest and bosom, filling her lungs, abdomen, lower body and head. "Cry...good....Yeah, maybe I should eat something. Ari, sorry about that little display, I guess I already miss my parents. I'm hoping that they arrive soon, but that's part of the adventure and I don't want to give away all my secrets just yet."

She turned to Moon and Alaeza, "Me eat? Auntie Moon, Aunti Alaeza, Ari tells me that Mr. Brice has an Inn, may I go there? I do not know the way and I don't want to get lost, but the 'jump' appears to have made me quite hungry and tired and I request your permission to go there, that is if somebody can show me where to go." She blinked as she smiled up at all three ladies, the strength of her tears giving her a glowing feeling of goodwill, peace and joy, despite her tummy's bickering complaints of starvation and restless agitation. She wondered who Ren and Brice were. She had heard her mother and father mention Brice's name before, but not Ren. She wanted to ask, but no sounds came out, so she closed her mouth, smiled and waited.

With Moon being the least telepathic, she heard nothing the young weasel girl was saying to her. With her best smile and greeted the young girl. "Well hello there, you must be one of Freddies children. You look just like her...hopefully you don't have her streak for mischief." She laughed.

She was greatly confused when the Aya started crying. "That confirms it, you are most definitively Freddie's little girl. Whatever is the matter sweetie, it'll be alright." She tried her best reassuring smile.

While the older females got reacquainted with one another as well greet the strange new weasel girl, Ren had taken a seat down on the stairs, listening to the conversation silently. Of course, he felt like he kept missing part of the conversation and the stranger who had introduced herself as Aya didn't seem to say much. His eyes then wandered to Moon as he inspected her from afar. She looked like she had been rolling around in mud. If she had, he was a little disappointed he hadn't been invited. He knew, however, she had been looking for Jairen. The boy sighed quietly to himself from where he sat. He was thinking about Ryder and how much the Alpha use to love Moon. He remembered once the man had told them that despite the different course their life had taken, he had still loved her. He turned away and stared at the front door.

Ren leaned his head against the stair's balusters with a bored expression on his face. It was accompanied by one of hunger.

Aya nodded her head up and down vigorously but she recognized immediately that her Aunti Moon didn't hear her. "I write...Moon..." She held up a digit to signify 'hold on for just a second', set down her bag, and retrieved from her breast pocket a pad of paper and a well-worn pencil attached by a string. She quickly wrote in a strong paw neatly printed letters....

I am Aya, Frieda's child. It's been a long time. I'm OK, just missed Daddy a little. No mischief, I promise.

She turned the pad for Moon to read and sensed the other creature by the stairs and sensed his mood. She turned to look at him and shuddered a little before gathering up her courage. She pointed to her chest to signify herself, "No...eat. K? Because I am skinny and taste bad." She smiled, he intrigued her. She didn't know what kind he was, but he smelled like wolf and she realized that her adventure indeed had begun.

"If one of you nice ladies would show me where the restaurant is, I can pay for a meal for you all, I have a white card. At least I hope it still works. Mommy hasn't used if for a couple of years now. If not, I have coin."

He head popped up a little when he saw Aya look in his direction. He scrunched his eyebrows up a bit when she pointed at herself. He smirked when she requested not to be eaten. She had spoken three words and the rest was via telepathy, which didn't surprise him since he was use to thoughts being public domain. When he was in a pack, nothing was private. Ren himself wasn't telepathic, at least, not in the same way this weasel girl was or Alaeza was. He could only communicate with other wolves and other wolves could hear his thoughts. He did wonder, though, why she only said two or three words at a time. However, he didn't inquire about it. Right now, it wasn't his priority. Getting to the Lion's Den and eating was. You should ask Captain Alae about how well I do at doing what I'm told, he grinned. "I'll try not to, but, no promises, especially if I'm being starved like right now," he spoke out loud. The teenager than stood up from where he was. "Let's get the show on the road, I'm so hungry, I could eat an entire Bovyne!" Or weasel girl, he mischievously smirked. He decided to go wait outside and headed for the door.

Aya blinked twice before she realized the male was making jokes, good jokes and they made her laugh at herself. She wrinkled her nose and pointed her paw at him "OK wolf-boy, you win this round, but this weasel-girl has jokes and two can play at this game, that is if you want to play. You...I eat...not." and once again, the most gentle musical giggle escaped her lips as she blushed. She watched the male leave the room and she wanted to follow him badly. But she knew her place and that she had asked Moon and Alaeza permission to go to the restaurant and she knew she had to wait for their reply. It would be a breach in her training, in protocol and disrespectful to her aunties to ask them one thing and then traipse off and do something else. She wasn't about to do anything silly or foolish, she wasn't here to be a problem, she may be here for an adventure, but she was also here to serve and to work at her craft. She just waved briefly as the male headed toward the door.

She subconsciously moved closer to Moon as she watched the male exit. She had suddenly just realized that something different had happened, she had said four words. It was a complete sentence with a subject, a verb and an object. And she has said those four words to a boy! She had never said that much to a boy before, much less a wolf-boy. Her heart beat faster as she pondered the implications of this new event. Would it ever happen again? Would she soon speak five words, six words, whole speeches? Well, not today, she would be content and happy with her four words and she soon forgot all about her tummy's complaining. She would also have to find out the boy-wolf's name...well, one thing at a time for now.

Moon read the note that Aya handed her, "That's what your mom said," she laughed, "We will see." She handed the notebook back. "If we are going to...Brice has a restaurant?" She shook her head, a few leafs fell out of her hair. "Anyway, I should clean up. I'll catch up with you all." She tried a smile again before leaving the group and heading upstairs.

Her room was dark, she didn't bother turning on the over head light. Once shutting the door she walked to her bedside table and turned on the small lamp. Like her, the room was covered in a small layer of filth, another thing she had to clean. Sighing she sat on the side of the bed and removed her boots, tossing them with a puff of dirt on the floor. After removing the rest of her dirt encrusted clothing and walked into her bathroom.

Lady Frieda Von Steuben

Lieutenant Colonel Weldon George (Ret.)

Back home at their compound on Omen, Lady Frieda Von Steuben interrupted her mate, Lieutenant Colonel Weldon George. He placed a bookmark in his book, The Hinge of Fate by Sir Winston Churchill and looked over the top of his spectacles at his mate and smiled at her adoringly, "Yes Freddie, what's wrong?"

Freddie smiled back, Welly always knew when she was upset, nervous or happy. After all, he had known her since the day she was born. She refocused her attention on her reason for coming into his study in the first place, "I can't find my 'lurking device.' Have you seen it?"

Weldon cocked his head thoughtfully, "Weren't they deactivated three years ago?"

Freddie shook her head, "Well, yes and no." She tried to find the precise wording for her explanation, "After the Westley Stickleback incident, Merril deactivated all four 'lurking devices' and replaced their crystals. They all functional again, but they aren't linked anymore and they won't change or hurt anybody. I haven't used mine since then, I keep it in my safe, but now it's not there."

Weldon stroked his chin, "You had it out last week."

"Yes, I took it to Merry to check it's power supply. Merry charged it and then I put it back in it's holder in the safe. That's the last time I saw it. I opened my safe this morning to get those contracts for Agricultura23 and noticed it missing and now I'm starting to panic. I don't want to lose it."

Weldon sat up straight and put down his book with a concerned look on his face. "No! Absolutely not! Not after what happened the last time. Can Merril locate it with a comm-link search?"

Freddie shook her head, "No. When they were reprogrammed, they became independent, not connected, 'invisible' to locator searches. Ironic, isn't it."

Weldon stood and took Freddie into his arms, "It's still tuned to your DNA, nobody else could use it if they found it. It's fail-safe. So, the only reason you are worried about it is that you lost it and you are sentimental about it. I understand that.

Freddie shook her head again, "No, you don't understand, it's tuned to my DNA, yes. But not all my DNA, just a portion of it, like a marker. There is one other who could use it who had the same identical DNA marker."

Weldon held Freddie at arm's length so he could focus on her face, "What exactly are you saying, dear."

Freddie stiffened, then looked pleadingly into Weldon's eyes, "Have you seen Aya latey?"

Having taken in time in the shower, Moon had dressed quickly. As she was leaving her room she noticed a green jacket hanging over her desk chair. She studied it a few moments before walking over and picking it up. As her hand brushed the fabric a scent came wafting off of it, it was Jai's. She picked up the jacket and brought it to her face, breathing in his scent. She stood a few moments like that before putting the jacket on. Holding the jacket close to her she left her room.

Once back downstairs she saw everyone was still standing around. Not feeling fully in the mood to talk to everyone she headed to the front door and out into the warm Meneb night. She saw Ren outside but mostly ignored him. She sat down a few feet away from the house, waiting for something to happen.

Aya's tummy rumbled again, just as she spied Moon walk out the door. Had that much time slipped by already? Moon intrigued her and so she followed, scribbling neatly on her pad as she tried to keep up. As she approached Moon, who was now sitting outside in the sun, she handed her pad to her 'Auntie.' "Auntie, I'm still very new here, don't know all rules. Is it OK to be your friend? Can you show me to the food? Please?" Aya handed her pad to Moon with a pleasant smile, but there was a line of worry on her face as her tummy protested again in anger. She hoped she hadn't committed some kind of faux pas by just leaving the others inside. Her eyes darted over at the male, she blushed and she forced her will to concentrate on Moon.

Ren had gone outside to wait for the others. The temperature outside had dropped some and was now a cooler, more tolerable warm. He had made his way out several yards away from the manor before doing flips and catwheels out of boredom. Even when he was hungry, his level of energy was still high. The young man finally stopped when he nearly hit a boulder, but managed to hop onto before crashing into it. Crouched on the rock, he turned his head when he heard the door open. Moon had stepped out, but she was unaccompanied, which meant the others weren't ready to leave for Brice's yet. He then saw the petite Aya follow out. A small, playful smirk formed on his lips and he leaped off the boulder and dashed towards the pair. As the weasel girl handed her pad to Moon, he quickly swiped it as he dropped to the ground to a sitting position. "So what's your deal, anyway," he asked as he examined Aya's pad. "You don't seem to say much. And when you do, you talk funny," he stated, being rather blunt. He then realized he hadn't introduced himself to the newcomer. "Oops. Forgot, I'm Ren. Well, it's actually Warren, but that's usually only when I'm in trouble. Which is actually quite a lot when i think about it. But yeah, otherwise, just Ren." The boy usually got more chatty when he was hungry. It was a way of distracting himself until he could eat.

Aya was startled at first, but she sensed no malice in the male, just an eager curiosity. She liked the attention he gave her and didn't mind his teasing. She was a little embarrassed for him that he interrupted her question of Moon, but she would try her best to defuse the situation by being a charming 'young female' like her mother taught her to be. She concentrated, trying to get the words that were firing off inside her head to come out her mouth, "Words...stuck." She gestured to her throat, "I am functionally mute, there is some neurologic or psychological reason that I cannot speak well. I have the words, I just can't get them out. I don't know why. " She blushed and realized that she hadn't introduced herself either. She curtsied daintily, despite wearing flight pants and spoke, "Aya..I..." "I am pleased to meet you Ren. You are very handsome and if you can actually hear what's going on inside my head, like I think you can, then I am in serious trouble of embarrassing myself by gushing.' She stuck out her paw for a shake, "Be...friend?" She looked at Moon to see if she could get a clue as to whether or not she was out of line.

"Where is it?" Kitsune murmured to herself as she dug through a duffel bag. "I know I put it here somewhere. . ."

Asher looked back from the cockpit, where he was curled on the passenger seat, and meowed, giving a lazy yawn as he did so.

"Well I don't see you looking for it," the vixen huffed, setting the bag aside and moving to the front of the airship cabin to rifle through her ruck sack. "That comm link is the only way I have of contacting the Midnight Lamp. If I lose it. . . it'll take me ages to track her down. If I ever do. Who knows where they are now. . ."

Pausing in her work, Kitsune spared herself the luxury of feeling sorry for herself. She had left Subeta of her own free will, which meant that she was free to return to this world as she wished, but it seemed that time here wasn't quite as equivalent as time back on Earth. <It's been over a year since I last saw everyone,> she mused. <After everything that happened. . . I wonder if there's even a crew to come back to. . . ?>

She was suddenly startled out of her reverie by a weight pressing against her right leg. She looked down at the ginger tomcat, whose green eyes were gazing up at her tenderly.

"You're right. I shouldn't waste time dwelling on 'what if's", she smiled and scooped him into her arms, burying her muzzle in his short fur and inhaling his comforting scent. "I should just take things as they come. It's always been the best course of action, hasn't it?"

Asher mewed softly and began to purr.

Suddenly, the vixen's sharp hearing picked up a soft beeping coming from her ruck sack. She crowed and put Asher back down on the floor, moving over to her ruck sack.

"I knew it!" She laughed triumphantly as she pulled out the comm link that would lead her to the Lamp. Checking the screen, she saw that it was still perfectly functional-- and showing coordinates.

Since she was already close to the coordinates it was showing, she figured she would dock her airship and reunite with her friends. She moved to the console and put in a docking request (which was swiftly approved), quickly moving about the cabin and packing up a few things as she did so. Slinging her bag over one shoulder and scooping up her cat, she gripped the comm link tight and teleported to the location marked on the screen. Before she could draw a breath, she was standing in front of an enormous mansion.

((Holy crap, long post is long! Guess I'm making up for lost time. X3))

Moon reached out for the notepad as Ren swiped it. She sighed, not wanting to wrestle the note from the kid. She paid little attention to the conversation the Aya and Ren were having, only noticing that he was teasing the young weasel. She pulled the jacket even closer to her body, though it was warm out, she wanted it near her. She saw movement out of the corner of her eye, which was Aya holding her paw towards Ren.

Ari had been catching up with Alaeza when Moon came down, looking a little more herself, and left. Aya soon followed, and Ari, not wanting to be left behind, decided to as well. After she said a quick goodbye to Alae she turned to leave and called out, "C'mon Aidan, time to go get dinner!" That got him going. He came running from his hiding spot and met her by the door. With a giggle she opened it for him and closed it behind them. She found Moon, Aya and Ren still outside, joined by a fox. A silver fox, with striking blue eyes. Ari couldn't look away from the exotic beauty, a faint blush growing over her freckles.

And I need something more to keep on breathing for
