When people on Subeta don't properly credit the artists they purchase their work from.

I find it incredibly disrespectful.

Is it so hard to have the artists' username in direct correlation to the image they drew?

It just sucks 'cause here I am getting all frustrated trying to figure out who exactly drew a piece I liked (and would also like to buy from!) and I can't because, wtf, there's no name? Who is the artist?

So many times I see pet pages where people just vomit out all the names of the art featured in their profiles or whatever and in to particular order either and no one knows which image was drawn by who and I just think it's lazy and very rude.

I don't know, maybe that's just me, but, man, I think it's a really Richard move.

Ugh, that bugs me, too. I try to be really specific when crediting, because I know it drives me crazy when there's 18 pictures and just a list of "ART BY A, B, C, D, E, F, AND G." I love finding new artists from other profiles, so this is a total pet peeve of mine!

I'm not sticking up for everyone who does this because obviously in some cases they just don't bother or whatever, but the thing is on Subeta, it can be very difficult to track users. If you have a lot of art and it was all done by different artists and you've had it for months/years, the artists might have changed their usernames a couple of times. Sometimes it's really difficult to figure out what they changed to. I just thought I'd throw this out there because it's another perspective on this complaint.

@Ariel
I know right? FFF;
I just don't understand how people could just... not do it at all.
That boggles my mind the most. Ugh. People. XD

@SEA
I dunno, I'd still try to make an effort to try and keep track.
I mean, if I liked their art enough to buy it, I'd probably try and friend the person.
Yanno, join their ping groups.
Usually they're pinged when an artist changes names.

Finally fierce. Almost.

I have a pet with a bunch of CIs by different artists and I listed the artists in the order that the CIs are placed, like really specifically, because I hate that too! I've found quite a few artists for my own stuff by snooping on other people's art, and I hate when it's not credited. It makes me feel bad for the artist too. They did the work, they should get the credit!

I also love the fact that you're using the default layout too on your profile. XD;;;
I dunno why but I just prefer those, I can just find things much easier on them. XD;

I feel really bad for a lot of the artists on subeta just because i hear all the time of how much crap they get. this thread particularly isn't a big deal, but i completely understand what you mean and its just the principle of the thing that is so disrespectful. even though i have no artistic talent whatsoever, if i did i feel like a lot of the users here would just make me hesitant to ever draw anything. half of the time they're left high and dry and never paid for the things people commission from them, or they are just hugely criticized (not kindly). the staff artists (who are all amazing) i'm sure have to have a thick skin just because of all the rude things people say. on the occasion that one of them releases something that i don't really like or think could be improved, it's so easy to just be nice and not be like "wow that's ugly, who drew that?"

as much as i love our users, they can be quite rude sometimes too

I love the default layout XD I've had it since my first day, and I've never been tempted to get a custom. Well, every once in awhile I see one with like amazing art and it's tempting, but I love all of my little boxes

Yeah I noticed that a lot reading some of like the new pet revamps and stuff like that and just all the crap people say
I'm just like "Wow, you can get an overlay of the old image if you dislike the new one THAT BAD..." Yeesh.

@Life
Same! Yay perfect little boxes. |D
Uniformity makes me so happy. XD;;;
Totally agree that sometimes I want a custom but then I'm like "Where would I put all my boxes then... ;3;"

"Always give credit where credit is due" is one of the mottos I live by. I'd never not credit an artist, or otherwise hide their signature. Tacky, disrespectful, and shady, if you ask me.

I have no problem asking a user who it was that drew a piece of art for them if there is no credit anywhere (although that could always mean they themselves drew it, which is no problem).

Artists should always remember to sign/watermark since they never know what might happen to a piece.

I just wanna say, from a different artist's perspective... some of us don't want credit given.

I don't do commissions, ever. I don't have the time for the going back and forths, especially not for the small amount of sP I feel my art is worth. I just draw for my pets, and for my friends, and I hate being credited (which, on pet profiles I have to be basically... because people are report happy. In the past people have been reported+ for not crediting themselves on their own pet profiles)-- because of basically this entire board.

I don't like people going omg I saw your art draw for me? Because then I have to feel like a dog and go no if I felt like drawing for people I'd have a board, please go away.

Which is the same reason the drawing in my forumtext has no artist 8D... she formally asked me not to credit her.

@Magic
That's really awesome to hear.
And yeah, I usually have to do that when I can't see a signature or any sort of relation to the artist that drew the image. 8/;
And then I kinda suggest maybe they should put credit somewhere. XD;

@Andrea
So you and the artist that drew your stuff never want people to know who it was that drew it?
I must admit I don't really understand that mentality.
Most people take pride in their work and spend a lot of time on their stuff and would prefer recognition over anonymity.
But, of course, that's just a majority opinion.

You can always have a section on your main page stating "I don't do commissions".
Most people respond to that. At least it's a way to save on confusion and getting reported?
Usually if I see that on someone's page and I don't bother them for commissions, I just join their ping group if they have one available, or just keep an eye on their user page if I'm interested.

On the flip side... if the artist really cared about being credited, they would sign their work?

@Toastmuffin

Actually the only things I have that other people drew are the Glaceon in my forumset, and the few credited pieces of art on my pet profiles. I don't commission other people, so anything else I drew.

I spend a great deal of time, the time I have to spare, on my art-- I'm not sure if you're suggesting otherwise? I just don't like being badgered by people, which is basically how most of this board sounds to me; less about credit where it's due, and more about "who did that so I can go ask them to draw for me."

I do have a note on my profile. I have for quite some time, sadly. However in the past I've still had people ask me who did something in my forumtext (before I changed it), followed shortly by the age old commission question.

That said, honestly I wasn't trying to say all artists don't have time/don't want credit so they won't be broken recorded. I'm sure most do care and would love the commissions/credit. However, just because MOST do, doesn't mean everyone does. Sometimes people commission people like me-- who don't want credit.

@Potter
So, if they don't sign their work, they don't really care so they don't deserve credit? Or?
Not trying to be argumentative. XD;
I just know some people who don't sign their work with their Subeta names, so, more often than not, that wouldn't help them anyway?

@Andrea
Naw I wasn't suggesting that you don't spend time in your work.
I just assumed that usually people who do spend that much time on their stuff would want to show it off and be proud and be like "I made this~"
But I think that's different in comparison, seeing as, if all you're doing is giving art to friends and the like, then, you aren't really being commissioned for it.
I guess this is more or less geared towards people who would actually like people to know who they are to gain future commissioners and they aren't getting the credit they deserve?
So, no. "Who did that so I can go ask them to draw for me" isn't what this board is about.
I've just seen multiple pet profiles, as well as forumsets now that it's been brought up, where people just barf out random names in no particular order, and some of the artists I know personally which just annoys me further.
And like Magic said, some people also go so far as to remove the signatures of pieces for their forumsets and the like as well.
THAT is what I find disrespectful and rude. Commission artists not getting proper credit.

I always try to credit the artists who I get work from, though once in a great while I have a minor meltdown because I for some reason or other didn't name the file with the artist name and then can't figure out who did it (this is mostly just true for back when I first joined Subeta).
But, if the artist wants to be credited, and I go with assuming they do, then I think it's rude not to do so. (however, I understand that gets hazy if the artist changes names a lot)

I have 1 or 2 pieces of art that I can't find the original artist at all because they've changed their username and don't have a ping group. And another the person has fallen off the face of the earth it seems. Some are from users who have quit subeta and their username is being used by someone else,but I usually say made by someone else if I can't find any username. Other than that I try to credit art where it's due.

As someone who's drawn art either as commissions or for free, I am not at all bothered by how recipients credit. The only thing I'm not okay with is them claiming it as their own work. Otherwise... whatev. If you want to know more specifically who drew what, comment the person. I doubt they'll bite your head off.

I wish Subeta would do what DA did and tell us when a user changed their name and to what...
Though how they would implement this feature with artists many don't friend is beyond me. Maybe if said artist has a group, the group will be informed or they could choose to display the change publicly in their sigs? o/ No clue! XD

I have so much art from years ago that I don't know who drew it anymore, either because names changed, or because I was brand new and had never commissioned art before that I didnt' save the username with the art images. I don't think that means I shouldn't be able to display it though

It always bothers me when I don't see any credits on a profile. But for some reason, it bothers me even more when I see people put "ask me if you want to know who did what on this profile" or something along that line. I can't explain why. I think it's not that particular difficult to credit an artist? Sure there are some people who collect tons of art and lose track. It's understandable, but I think people should at least try? And if the artist changes name, you could still put down their previous name and just not link. I just think crediting is a form of respect. Though, if they request not to be credit, I'll respect that choice too, but I feel most artists do appreciate to be credited in some way.

I WANT to give credit and I try, but I commission a LOT and I really can't spend every day trying to track artist that change their names every month. :/
Plus, some of my characters I've had for years and years, and their artwork dates back to 4 or 5 years ago...

When I credit people I put the link to whatever it is that they did before their usernames, ie Quote:
'[link] by *username*'
regardless of whether it is a part of the profile or not. I figure it works.

When people just list usernames it doesn't particularly bother me, even if I'm one of the artists, as long as they credit me at all it's fine.

I generally try to list usernames in the order of the art that I display, or use the 'piece' by 'user' method. But I rarely look back at the pages when I'm not exclusively working on them so I don't put much effort into keeping track of people's usernames (name change, etc.). There are only two artists that I liked enough to stalk after their name changes and therefore change the credit accordingly. But seriously, though, I always figured that if anyone browsing my pet pages or whatnot liked the art enough, they'd shoot me a comment asking about the artist. It's not like I'm going to tear their heads off for asking, and it takes all of five seconds to put in a comment. Shouldn't be that big of a deal. Being social is good.

Personally, as an artist myself, I don't care how my stuff is credited as long as my name is on there somewhere. Since I already put my name on most of my commissions, I'm fairly lax about how I'm credited.

However, I can't stand it when someone blatantly removes a signed name or alters a piece when it's not made to be altered. That just unreasonable.
