 With the unveiling of the new pet spotlight guidelines, there seems to be a growing consensus that says a pet cannot be "spotlight ready" without dumping lots of sp or real money into the art/profile/etc. WELL I AM HERE TO PROVE YOU WRONG. Introducing Project Thrifty! The goal of Project Thrifty is to completely finish a pet without spending any sp/csc/usd. I am going to be doing this with my pet Krista and anyone is welcome to join me! But before we can start, I need to lay down some ground rules. 1. You are allowed to earn money, but only from when you start the project and on. Don't sell old items you already have, start fresh! Get to restocking, questing (and then vending from earned tokens, if you want!), earning achievement prizes, and sell them all in an empty shop. Keep track of how much you earn there—that's all you're allowed to use to buy treasure items, potions, magical keepsake boxes, etc. Just not on commissions! 2. Try to start with a fresh, new pet. If you have to use an existing pet, try to make it as fair as you can (ex: only use the treasure slots you gain starting now or for every two treasure slots you use, try to buy an extra MKB and throw it in your vault to make up for it). 3. Since the whole point of this is to do this on a lower budget, we're highly encouraging people to trade your own talents for other art, graphics, or stories you may need, rather that buying it. We know that this might not always be possible, so if it comes to it, you're welcome to save up money the old fashion way as described above. This might be just as much of a challenge! Don't sell your work and use the profits to buy a profile/art, only trade! If you have artist friends, they are allowed to help, but you cannot ask for help. They either have to gift the art to you or open a freebie thread. We're encouraging you to trade and gift talents as much as possible, but if you're having trouble with this, it's okay to save up to buy art and graphics. If you wish, you may post a checklist of sorts to keep track of your progress! In the next post, @Ariel will post a good a blank template and then a link to everyone's original post! That way you can update that post as you go and everyone can see your progress. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? Are these rules fair? Did I forget anything? #circuit #princess @Paint Come help! Hints: - The Art Freebie Forum and Profile and Graphics Freebie Forum are your best friends! - The Zapper v2 in Darkside has the chance to increase your pet's treasure slots, in addition to changing it's colour and species, for just 15 wizard tokens! - WIZARD QUESTS - Games are a great way to make quick sp - Don't forget that you make sp just by posting on the forums! - To remind yourself to do your dailies, add the links to your notepad widget!  Username: AmandaPet name: Chloe Description of pet: Chloe is an average, spoiled hipster. This fresh-out-of-high school beauty wants nothing more than to sit by the side of a pool and scoff at strangers. Goals: Color pet: Glacier bumbus Obtain minion: Overlay: Not sure yet if overlay will be quad or human. Her human "overlay" should be as follows.APPEARANCE She's got big fluffy brown hair kind of like sailor jupiter. When it's down she likes to do funky braid things like this but brunette. She has blue eyes like the "starry" option on the bottom of here. She is very tall and slender and always has a bit of a smerk on her face. CLOTHES She's really into off shoulder sweaters like THIS or THIS or this or sometimes a little more person of questionable reputationty like this Profile: Not sure yet  Maybe a big flower shop. Story: Chloe is spoiled beyond belief so her parents decide to cut her off. She needs to change her entire view on life in order to survive this new, harsh world. After spending a lot of time and effort trying to find her place and constantly being rejected, an old and possibly crazy man invited her to work with him at his flower shop. Other art: Chloe behind the counter of this really worn down flower shop. Think a wooden lemonade stand, but with flowers instead of lemonade. Items needed: Lots and lots of mkbs! Username: ArielPet name: Harper Description of pet: Harper is a freshwater, desert octopus. She's a warm golden (or green or pink or ahh I don't know!) color with a variety of succulents instead of suction cups. Goals:     May a knit version of one of her characters for this!Minion overlay: A green porcupine fish that looks like a cactus. Profile: Unsure still, will depend on what my overlay and potential other art looks like. I'm thinking sand or cracked playa. Maybe the tex area lined with a row of succulents? I dunno, will see what comes of this in my braaaaain! Story: Still working out the kinks of this, will write myself! pandemonium!! Jag some art for a knit version of one of her characters!  Username: NIKKIPet name: Caspar Description of pet: Caspar is a winged giraffe. Only his horns are on fire, no other part of his body. He has very knobbly knees and tattered ears. Goals: Color pet: common experiment #911 Obtain minion:  obtained!Overlay: Somewhere between 200x200 and 400x400. Probably him hovering a few feet off the ground with wings flapping rapidly, or hiccuping out the tiniest flame/smoke ring. Profile: Open to ideas and suggestions. Possibly a hand drawn map of Subeta with rreign populated areas circled. Story: Caspar is a young experiment #911 who is completely convinced he is a rreign. He journeys to an extinct volcano above Veta Lake that is rumoured to be the home of a rreign clan. After much pleading he finally has the chance to speak with an elder [Uther?] who explains to him that if he really wants become part of the clan he must embark on a journey of self-discovery. Caspar is confused by the old rreign's words but gladly accepts the challenge and sets off with a map and his trusty minion. Other art: Large paper map for profile. WHATEVS I will dl the highest quality of the movie/tv show and gif the moment for you. These won't be posted on Tumblr. I am also more than willing to snail mail people.  Oohhhh my God this is the best idea, this is such a fun novel idea?? I AM REALLY REALLY TEMPTED I'd like to do this with Daff ... though I've already commissioned art for Daffodil so maybe not. Maybe Rodger. MAYBE SOMEONE. I JUST. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO TEST THIS OUT this sounds like such a fun challenge! @Amanda This is a cute idea. c: The only critique of the rules I have is this: Quote: If you have artist friends, they are allowed to help, but you cannot ask for help. I get the mentality behind this, but I feel like a lot of newer, unknown or poorer users probably don't have that many friends, or at least not generous ones. I can think of quite a few users, both popular and not who are gifted things constantly- anything from potions to art and graphics. Thus this setup would still be less of a challenge for them. Hell, I can think of a couple who have essentially already completed this challenge with older pets because they had everything given to them. I didn't see it in the rules, but I think at the very least it should be a rule that the people participating here can open up their own freebie request threads and the like.

 I only meant you can't like...call up your artist bff and ask them to make your pet for you! Of course anyone can make a freebie request thread  Making a freebie thread seems inherently different than commissioning a friend to me. I only included the friends thing because I thought it would be unfair to people who did have artist friends to be forced to refuse gifts. Having them not be allowed to ask was a good compromise, I thought. You are welcome to change the rules for your own experience! |

@Amanda Haha, I suppose, but I guess what I'm saying is, if the point is to rely on your own talents and gifts from people, the guidelines seem more unfair to people who don't have anyone who is willing to lend them a hand than it is for people who can post up their ideas and then just sit back and wait for their artist friends to draw them a free overlay. Also, people wouldn't have to refuse gifts from their artist friends, they could still post it on the pets' profile via link and then only have things that they made or earned themselves as part of the visible aesthetics. I'm not trying to rain on the idea though.  I guess I'm just a little confused where the challenge lies for people who are already given most things.

Oh my gosh, this is such a great idea! I'll keep eyes on this thread, I wanna see how everyone's pets turn out. I won't join in myself, I draw, code and write everything on my own so I honestly don't spend very much on my pets in pure sP.

The point is to kinda find your own challenge and make this hard on yourself. Tweak it as you can! For me, I'm interested in trying to go back to my roots and see how long it takes me to get a pet from start to finish starting with 0 sP. I've bought 95% of the art I have, so for me at least, getting gift art would be a lot harder than just saving up and buying it I think XD No one's on a level playing field, of course (we were already talking about things like what if you get a lizard event? can you autoprice? etc), but I think it's a fun challenge to try to do! The whole gifting part was really just put in because it'll obviously happen, but if possible, trading talent for talent is ideal! GOD I WISH I HAD TALENTS XD |

 Oh this is such a cute idea! I may join in with Mariel, since I haven't even touched her yet. @Amanda I don't really have any talents to trade for art and profiles etc, I write my own stories but I'm a very slow writer and not confident enough in my writing to try to trade it for art, so I just want to make sure that it's ok to commission art and a profile with the money I earn from quests and games and such. |

NEW IDEA. : Jetplane taking off from Chicago and landing in London. So have a Map/Globe where Chiacago is Clearly marked and then the dotted line that you see ont he screens on the seat in front of you, landing in London. So willl need Way more art than I planned. If that would even work. But def. Want Airplanes incorporated. Story: In the works, saved on a USB Drive. Story about how John and I met, but written like a childrens fairy tale. - Checked out the story today, although whimsical and adorable not sure if I can cram nearly 10 years of Oo-la-la Romance into a Fairy tale. Might try to just write a basic story and then a fairy tale. Idk yet. Other art: wedding cake maybe. What I REALLY REALLY WANT... Is a Jetplane. Overview Username: TilcaraPet name: Firmin Description of pet: He is an old butler who remembers his childhood. I got him named yesterday and I don't have a very precise idea of what I'm going to do. His Charahub is still very empty. Goals: Color pet: Glacier harvester Obtain minion: not sure yet Overlay: no overlay Profile: a box and objects spread on a table with a letter "to my 70 year-old self, from my 7 year-old self". Firmin is standing behind, showing his back and looking into a mirror. Each object reveal a part of his life at clicking. I will make it myself when I have tiiiiiiiime certainly with photo stocks if I don't have the means/chance to get art. Story: Not a whole story, but little moments of his life linked to particular objects. I'm currently gathering data on life in Algeria during its independence war. Other art: art of Firmin showing his back and looking into a mirror. Items needed: Firmin's WL (to add : one box item (rather plain because he wasn't a rich kid), things that recall Algeria, marbles) My project thrifty shop. Willing to help : I can code and make graphics (examples in my shop), if you have the graphics and just need the profile to be coded I can do it for free if it's not overly complex.  hoar is now pax. Oh my god. I've been working on my pets behind-the-scenes recently, and I have to say that I think this would be a great idea! I want to work on all of my pets (and I wanted to try my hand at making a pet almost completely by myself,) so this is perfect for me. ;A; (Wait, sorry that I kept editing - I'm too tired, so I am completely neglecting proper sentence construction right now. ;__; ) Overview Username: User not found (1): hoar Pet name: Grammar Nazi Description of pet: My old idea for Grammar Nazi was for him to be a man rendered homeless due to a cruel turn of events in his mid-age, abandoned by his family, forgotten by his colleagues, with only his gift in writing to lean on. He, however, has a slightly unsettling penchant for food prepared with blood (black pudding, and the like,) as well as ketchup and other condiments which remotely resemble blood. He is also a polyglot, proficient in EIGHT different languages. I have lost attachment to the idea, and have been attracted to utilizing IRONY in at least one pet. Grammar Nazi will then be a girl, and the "spirit animal" of a character of mine named Kate, who is a second-language English speaker (a bit of a challenge, considering I am a THIRD-language English "speaker") with a constant compulsion to correct and perfect her own grammar and syntax, and only hers. However, she has more to herself than being just a grammar nazi with regard to her own work. Goals: Color pet: I have no idea - I've yet to look at all the pet colours and see which one fits her personality best. Obtain minion: I'm looking for something either related to Aquarius, or possibly a snake. Overlay: I'll be drawing it myself. Profile: I'll try to code it alone as far as I could, then probably ask for some assistance with it. Story: 75% complete, requires proof-reading, organization, and expansion. Other art: I commission quite a few pieces of artwork, but I intend to draw all of the art assets to be used in her profile/display, as I have a roleplay thing where I draw in various styles for different characters of mine (they will serve as "birthday gifts" to her.) Items needed: A maximum of 55 Magical Keepsake Boxes. Items would be related to apothecary, but will not cover the entire Apocalyptic Apothecary shop - focus will be on relatively INEXPENSIVE plant-related items (event items/items not greater than 1.5 million sP each,) among other things related to her. [Hoar] - Some of you may want to join this, and I think [Riot] might also be interested in the project! Progress: August 23 - Removed all the old treasure chest items, took off original placeholders for Grammar Nazi. - Added the Beach Terrarium and Aqua Esther, from the Phoenix Cruise + Greenhouse quest. August 24 - Spent everything in excess of 750,000 sP in vault (total prior was 2,5 million sP,) building up from scratch. - Earned 1,8 million sP from Saggitarius' quests (reserved 800,000 sP for non-Project Thrifty concerns) - Acquired RE for Grammar Nazi's TC (+1 slot) August 25 - Opened Oderfla as a shop for Grammar Nazi's treasure chest. - Earned 2 million sP from Saggitarius' quests (reserved 1,5 million sP for unrelated art.) - Received an MKB from User not found (1): Makicoon (+3 slots) August 26 - Received the Sougara Shiver Frameless Glasses from User not found (1): DAHMER! - Reached 500,000 sP+ in Oderfla. - Earned 1,2 million sP from Saggitarius' quests. - Decided on new item to add to Grammar Nazi's treasure chest (Vesnali terraria.) August 27 - Acquired New Growth and Dark Shaman Shriveled Fruit for treasure chest. - Decided on new item to added to treasure chest: Morostide Bubbling Vials. Overview Username: DarkraiPet name: She-Wolf Description of pet: Um. I actually just made her for this project, because I thought it would be awesome to do. She's some kind of very non-Twilighty werewolf. Or something. >>;; I'm going to work very hard to make her not cliche, lol. I do know that she has a wolf pelt that she wears, like the skinwalkers. Goals: Color pet: Nightmare Telenine Obtain minion: Obtained  8/27/12Overlay: idk about that either, probably something simple like I had for Sieg's overlay, and then a bigger piece of art. Profile: I basically can't do anything with code and profiles other than edit them a little if something's off. I can do, like, basic stuff. But honestly, I'll need tons of help, once I come up with an idea. Story: I can do this. Other art: I need one big piece of art that I'll try to do myself. I actually can draw a little, but it's been a while, so we'll see. Items needed: MBKs and... stuff. Thrifty Shop She-Wolf's WL Haha, I'll edit this more as I come up with it. This is awesome. ♥ Edit: Also, I'd be happy to help anyone else however I can. I can't do much but write a little, but if you need a proofreader or whatever, I maybe can help there. Progress

 I've only had one pet.... and am currently still working on her. I will think on this, sounds like a wonderful and creative idea.
