I've thought this so many times I have lost count... not only in times of depression but also in times of joy. That small pang whispering "why?" ever so softly. It is not a voice, just a thought, but an incredibly persistent thought. People speak of 'purpose' like it actually exists, but to whom? This world and everything in it will continue revolving and plodding on whether we as individuals are here or not. We may be able to affect outcomes, most often in small proximity and occasionally in mass, but we essentially are nothing. Absolutely nothing and it is a reality that shakes the minds of some into thinking... "Why should I go through all of this? Why should I stay here?" The answer is simply: if you do not want to, don't. But if there is someone who finds joy in your existence, or YOU find joy in your existence... Why not stay? Life is so short and as far as we know, you only get to live it once. We all may be nothing compared to the infinite expanse of the universe, but the universe would not be the same without stars. Without solar systems. Without planets. Without some form of life (such as humans). Without atoms. Atoms seem so insignificant but they make-up all (or so we assume) of our world. You may be an atom to your family, to a friend, to a community, to a pet... If you bring joy to someone (even if they have four feet), you have what humans call a "purpose". You are the world to someone regardless of your rank in the universe and bringing them joy is a much better outlet for a busy mind than standing depressively idle weighing the pros and cons of your existence. It takes effort to remind yourself daily that even if you do not matter to yourself, you matter to someone. Not everyone, but hopefully a majority of the people reading this matter to someone. And if not, go adopt a special somebody who can love you unconditionally and quite possibly is being saved from having a neglectful caregiver in the future. "Purpose" and "fate" are human excuses to avoid accountability. "Love" and "happiness" are self-sustaining, real experiences that we can feel and spread to others.

This story seems to describe how one feels when depressed. Just drifting, life was good, even though it's (feels) 'over' now. Interesting. And then, I realized that the name of the pet is the name of an antidepressant. x) This is very... clever, amazing, and interestingly incorporated. Congrats on the win. ^_^
