Hi all! It's been a few days since the Big Move, so I thought I'd post a little status update. I wanted to address some things that might be on people's minds (cough lag), and talk about where we go from here.
So yeah, the lag issue. I've heard a few people say that they wish we'd stayed on the old servers, since the site seems slower on the new servers. While this may be true, it's by no means the whole picture.
We didn't move to make the site faster, at all. We moved because the old servers were actually causing our database to become corrupt and eventually crash the site entirely, at which point the site was down until we could recover the database. Sometimes even our real-time backup was corrupt, which led to much-hated rollbacks.
Obviously, something had to change, and so we moved off of the old servers and onto our new ones, which so far (crosses fingers) seem rock solid. Our database has been taking much more punishment than it was ever capable of handling before, and it's handling it with grace, not locking up or crashing or anything. A HUGE improvement!
On the other hand, things do seem slower... that much is the truth. Why? It could be for any number of reasons... not least of which is the fact that we started an event immediately upon moving here. Also, servers are not simple boxes that you plug in and turn on. They have more configuration options (think buttons and knobs and dials) than you could imagine. Getting the settings right for these servers might take some time.
But by far the biggest point is this: now that we're free of servers that crash and corrupt the database, we can begin to address Subeta's performance issues in earnest. These problems are rooted in the programming, and that, I can fix :)

No more mysqls? So why was the site down with the stupid stupid squirrel again? Again with the contradictions.
Hooray! Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into the site (I know I prolly couldn't do it!)
Thanks for the hard work... any chance of an adjustment on the wiz quest timers until the lag is better? it's a bummer getting stuck with a 5pt token because the pages aren't loading. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

the lag really was terrible but it seems to getting better and better
today the site is going normally and so big thanks for the hard work you guys do

Aww love you all. c: Thank you for doing your best on this! It's truly appreciated.
As for the ungrateful people? Eh, there's always a blemish on society, it's unavoidable. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

yes i agree stop complaining people and think how hard they work to keep this site up and running i have never seen a more dedicted lot of people who actually care for their users and i thank you all subeta staff a big round of applause ok..
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY im so happy that we wont crash anymore!!!!!!!!!! thanks keith and alx

I see now why most people abandon their own sites... You try your hardest to do something good and all people do is complain and complain and complain.
All I have to say to you people that are complaining is, be happy that you still have Subeta, because in the past few months I've seen site owners tell the players to go screw themselves and take entire sites off-line because everything they did to try and help the site got criticized like this.
Now would you rather have lag? or no subeta at all?
I applaud all the hard working people behind subeta, they try to keep thing's fresh and new, and they always are giving us stuff to do. Keep up the hard work guys =).

Ok guys,Chill out! I keep seeing alot of hate comments saying that they said they were moving to make the site faster and then said they didn't. Read the post. It seems like they were HOPEING that no more lag would be a side effect....They never said they were moving to get rid of the lag...
I really, really didn't notice the lag at all. But I have been busy and what not, so I haven't done many quests or running around, just lurking on forums and such.
But yeah, sense I don't feel like buying anything atm, I don't mind if the site is too slow to get a lot of money from the wiz. Sense I'd rather be able to chat with my friends without crashing then making pretty pixels ;3

I wouldn't mind the lag so much if it weren't for time quest. It would nice if the 15 point wizard token prize time was made longer to make up for the lag. Seeing as it's nothing we can do to make it speed up, we shouldn't be punished for not getting our item to him in time.

ahh I honestly prefer if the site would crash at random points than be incredibly slow Dx It's unbearingly hard to do wizard quests...
i have noticed that subeta is slower, but if you're going to work on it after you're sure the new server works, fine with me.

Thank you Alex!
And those of you saying he's contradicting himself need to read his quotes better. He said "hopefully" the site will be faster, which by no means means the site "will" be faster.

Nice work but in fact I would prefer not having subeta in week for one day than couldn't play because of lag... pls try make it faster ^^

You rock Alex! I know this is quite a challenge! Best of luck to you guys!
Alex, I thoroughly appreciate you taking the time to discuss what exactly goes on with the site. Even if people don't necessarily understand whats going on, you try to make it comprehensible. Good luck with future programming <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> And thank you!
alex i love you xD
it's so kind of you to keep us up to date, and i totally believe that you will find, whatever is going wrong
(although i really believe that the lag is caused by all the people which are online more than usual donatintg masses of books to the readingdrive)
anyways. i think that you all do a very awesome job at the moment. the artists are busy the programmers are busy everyone is working and working and our game-experience gets better every day!
i really thank you all for that =)

though the lag is annoying..... the only thing where it bothers me is with the Wizard Quest. I always end up with only a 5 wizard token<img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> Any way you could put a larger time before the tokens go down?

Today, the site seems faster.... <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

one query about the news post
you say
'we didnt move to make the site faster at all'
yet i found this in your june 10th news post.
'So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.
With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.'
slight contradiction lol

We appreciate your hard work!! I'll take a stable server over a fast one any day! Thank you!

I thought you were trying to get it faster? I am pretty sure I read that before...
I haven't been doing much. It took me so long to make one scroll last night, I don't have the patience to do quests, I really hope it gets fast. It seems pretty fine now, at like 6-8 am, so I take advantage of that time.

I don't know why people complain so much when all the staff here are working hard to keep this site moving as smoothly as possible. I think I'd prefer lag as to downtime and rollbacks, even if I can't get the many wizard tokens or great quest items that I usually get. But anyhow, keep up the great work! Thanks for the update too. c:

Thank you for the update and for all the hard work. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

Thanks for the update. The lag has been very annoying, to the point that I'm not doing quests because, especially with some of the shorter time limits the site lag interfers enough to miss them. If the lag can't be addressed, maybe you consider extending the time allotted to get the higher wizard tokens.
Glad to know that the team is working hard as always!
...
There was LAG? Really? ... I hadn't actually noticed ^-^; My computer always lags a bit, but Subeta works very well for me, always has.

Despite the fact that we moved servers to keep them "solid" and not to avoid lag, the fact that we DO have so much lag really seems like a one step forward, two steps back kind of deal. In the last two days I've fairly consistently gotten 5 and 10 point tokens on Wiz quests I would have easily gotten a 15 point token on before, just because it can take upwards of three or four minutes for any shop search page to load. Triple this for three-item quests. This added with the already existing and thus far not dealt with issue of the stupid little item info boxes taking forever to load, makes it pretty much not worth it. I sure hope this is a very temporary thing.

Why are your stories always changing and so vague like the poster below me agrees? Why bring up a Major contest/game like the book drive when it was obviously lagging terribly? Not to mention the bugs...gods.
If, in your heart, you know you're doing the right thing....good. I'm never ever quite certain.

I don't mean to be rude and these explanations are certainly appreciated... but honestly, they are so vague you could just summarise and not write a life story, sry2say.

Thank you Alex <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> and the rest of the staff working on it ^^
Woot! Go Alx! And the rest of the Subeta staff! It really makes me happy to hear we're on servers that can handle us now.
