Dear diary...

Mew? Why, what do you know, a reader? You must be a reader, since you are actually reading this. Now I did not write this, mind you, but my owner did. She writes a lot about me and my so-called adventures. Me? I'm just a simple cat, I'm not even sure if I'm worth so much text. If you're still interested and have some spare time, how about I share my story with you?

I was born on the 2nd of September in a barn, together with my five siblings. We weren't strong cats, since my mom had gotten a lot of kittens in a short period of time. I was the oldest and therefore the strongest. I don't remember a lot from that period, except a few incidents... all thanks to that stupid dog. The dog, I don't remember his name somehow, was also living at that barn and he always wanted to play. He was really enthusiastic and playful, yet somehow I found him scary. One day he was playing with one of my sisters and suddenly she disappeared. Turned out he hid her somewhere outside and it took us three days to find her back. Or when he played with one of my brothers, the dog was reckless and at some point my brother stopped moving... it was terrifying. We moved not too long after that.

People came and took my siblings away one by one. No one seemed really interested in me and eventually I was the only one left. I heard some people talk about how I was ugly and how I wouldn't find an owner like my siblings. At that point, I got a little worried – they didn't want to keep me... what if I ended up alone?

A few days went by and suddenly I moved too! The humans locked me up in some kind of box and I was transported to some place. I wonder if I could find that barn again, probably not, it's a long time ago. I came in a small room where two people were staring at me. One was a young woman and the other a young man. I wasn't sure if those were my new owners, they stared at me like I was made of gold! The room wasn't really big, but at that time... I wasn't really either so it didn't matter. I sniffed around and started discovering where I was. It smelled really strange, not like the barn at all. One thing did smell familiar though, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Suddenly I saw a white flash and POOF there was my youngest sibling! We jumped on each other full of joy and played for hours. The neighbour turned out to be the new owner of my youngest brother, so we could play a lot together! Those were really nice days, we played a lot and it was really easy to get used to my new home.

One day though, my brother didn't show up. It didn't matter how much I mew'ed, but he was gone. My owners were giving me lots of attention, but it was quite lonely without him. I heard my owners talk about how my brother was really ill all of the sudden and I got worried. You see, my younger brother suddenly collapsed and was dehydrated, he vomited a lot and just looked terrible. He never returned and I guess he's with one of my other brothers now. It's sad.

So I had to get used to being alone more. I don't like being alone, so I spend a lot more time with my owners. They were really sweet and gave me all the attention I could want. When they were gone, I would sit in front of the window. Not to wait for them, I couldn't really see them from there. I could see a garden though, and birds and lots of different things. There was a whole new world on the other side of the glass and I couldn't wait to explore that world. I'd watch birds, other cats, bugs... all sorts of moving things really. My owners wouldn't let me go outside, but I spend hours and hours just staring at the other side of the window.

It was all going great, I was happy and I grew more and more fond of my owners. It all just went out of the window in a few hours though. I started feeling sick and tired, I was really hot and my energy felt drained. The young female seemed to notice and tried to make me drink some water. I just couldn't, I don't know what it was but I didn't have the strength to stand up and drink. That's when I was put in the box again. Now I do hate that box, but I was too tired to even do something. They could have thrown me out of a window and I wouldn't have cared. I was taken to some strange place where a strange, long-bearded man gave me a few shots. It wasn't long before I started feeling better, my temperature went down and my energy-level went up. After that, my owners fed me some pills for several days. Those were really nasty and I did not like them, but humans are way stronger than I am, so I did not have a choice. Later on I heard it was really close at that point. My temperature was way too high and I too, was dehydrated. If my owners had waited another night, I would not have survived whatever it was that hit me. I started feeling better with the hours and a few weeks later... I almost forgot it ever happened.

Then one day, they opened the window. I was so excited and wanted to jump outside. I smelled the unfamiliar and I wanted to explore dammit! Something was in front of the window though. I could smell the outside, I could feel the breeze, but some kind of net was between me and there. I pushed and bit and pulled, but nothing seemed to work. My owners seemed pleased. It wasn't all bad, I could sit at the window and be partially outside, but it just isn't the good stuff you know. It is STILL inside... not where I want to be. At night, I would secretly push and pull some more, one day it would be me who won the battle.

It started getting colder though, much colder. There was more wind and at one point... it was white outside, pure snow. My owners opened the door for me, so I could get outside. I didn't hesitate a second and run towards the door and took a huge jump. DAMMIT! Should have never done that. Snow is disgustingly cold and yucky and... well needless to say I went back inside. Who would want to be in snow like that?! Not me, that's for sure.

The snow stayed for several days and the world outside had changed quite a lot. I still couldn’t get outside because the window was still covered with something. I hated that stupid net. Every night, when my owners were snoring like crazy, I tried to get rid of that net. It didn’t budge at first, but the longer I work on it the more it seemed to be moving. Then one night it happened… The net got loose and I could squeeze myself through this little hole. I was outside, finally outside! Now it was time to explore all those smells and all that grass and all those trees and… I hardly knew where to start!

I had been exploring the neighbourhood for quite some time now. I caught the smell of another cat that had been walking around in my area for quite some time and I followed it. Then I heard some bugs flying and I simply had to chase them as well… needless to say that they went down. No one can win from my haunting skills! Quite a lot of time must have passed because it seems the sun is going down again, but I had no clue where I was and how to get back to where I came from. I was lost!

My owners must have looked for me everywhere, since they love me without a doubt, and I looked everywhere for them. It seemed I couldn’t pick up their smell though and I wandered around quite hopelessly. Finally I found a nice smelling garden where I could hide under a bush while it was raining. It had been several days and I was starting to wonder if my owners were secretly glad that I was gone… that would be horrible! Then on a windy and rainy day someone came to pick me up. I don’t know who they were, but at that point I could care less! They fed me and kept me warm and I could finally sleep on a warm cushion again. But had my owners really given up on me?

Of course they hadn’t. Who would give up on a cute cat as I? It didn’t take long before they came to pick me up and boy was I happy to see them! And they were happy to see me. They petted me for ages, it didn’t end. I was so glad to see the cat carrier they took with them. Usually I dislike that thing because it’s obviously meant to torture cats, but now it was something familiar and something that could take me back to the place I belonged. It could take me back home. My owners took me home and petted me there again for ages. It’s quite a relief to experience that they loved me and that they really had missed me. Because secretly… I had missed them a whole lot as well!
