He had fought in many battles, but never, NEVER in his entire life, in any scar, in any brawl, any war, or any torture had he put up with anything like her. She enraged him. Every word she spoke seemed to tug his feathers in the wrong direction. She got under his skin, prodding and laughing at his anger. Her subtle grins, her soft chuckles, the twinkle in her eyes. How could such minimal things affect him like that? And of course, he was mad at himself.

Letting some girl get to you, he growled at himself. Caio, what have you become? He shook he head gruffly and tried to move away from her, but she happily moved into his way again. "Trying to run?" she laughed. He glared at the ground as she playfully swiped his foreleg. "A brave, strong, warrior like you, Caio? Or maybe you just really have to take care of some business." That set her rolling with laughter.

"Lena!" he snapped, his frustration finally bursting over the walls he had built to keep it caged. "You're insufferable! I can't stand you any longer!" He snapped his beak for emphasis, and then took off, breaking through the top canopy of the trees above in almost no time. She stood and watched him go, half amazed that he had just yelled at her, and half amazed that he was so fast.

"I guess they don't call him a fearsome warrior for nothing," she muttered, sitting down. This was odd. She wasn't sure what to do. She could go after him. "I'm sure he needs some time to cool down," she sighed to herself. "I should probably just go home." Besides, she felt a little sad. She began a long walk home out of the forest, following along a well-trod dirt trail. It took her a while because she always stopped to sniff the flowers, something her parents had taught her to live by. Also, be observant, they had instructed their only child. You never know what you might miss out on if you don't pay attention. Lena closed her eyes. She knew exactly what she was missing out on.

Exhaling deeply, she spread her pale wings and lazily lifted herself off the ground, deciding to leave the ground and flowers behind her. Getting home would be quicker this way. Things might be better when I get home. Things can always get better, she thought. The thought made her hold her head up a little higher. Why was she so upset, anyways? She had brought this upon herself. And besides, she hadn't really done anything. Nothing outside the usual. In fact, he usually made a snide remark back at her every so often.

"Trying to run?" a gruff voice remarked from behind her. She spun around to see Caio there, his dark wings flapping casually. His expression stayed its usual angry grimace, but she could see a smirk in his eyes. Well, the one that wasn't marred. She looked away.

"I thought you couldn't stand me any longer," she huffed, speeding up her flight a bit. Any distance she could put between herself and that bird-brain was good distance indeed.

He glided forward, quickly surpassing the space between them. "I couldn't stand you any longer, and now I've changed my mind. Sorted out my emotions." He was cool, hard as a rock. She had no idea what she was thinking, or what she was feeling. "Anything you throw at me, I can put up with," he said proudly. "If I can deal with fights to the death, I can deal with you."

She grinned widely and raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

Caio gulped as quietly as he could. What have I gotten myself into?
