Life Excerpt
He stretched his arms and his back after closing the door behind him. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the clean morning air, and wondered what this day would bring. Being the true optimist that he was he always loved the dawning of a new day. It was like embarking on an adventure. A new one every day. It was, in his mind, invigorating. None of his friends in the village understood how he could be so happy all the time. Or how he always found a silver lining in everything that happened. True, sometimes he had to look a bit harder to see what good a seemingly tragic thing would bring but there was always something. If a couple broke up it probably wasn't meant to be in Kou's mind. The right person was probably still out there for both parties. He did know though that not everyone wanted to hear his sunny view of things, and especially not in trying times.
He set out on his daily jog around the village. Nowadays it was large enough to provide one with a healthy distance to do every day. Afterwards he would go down to the underground gym and practice some Tae Kwon Do, but first the run. It always left him wide awake after all the fresh air and forest scents he'd take in. And it was also a very beautiful and peaceful place. The forest around the village was very old and practically untouched. They had all decided long ago that they would do their best to preserve it, and so far they'd managed to do it without much of a problem. Some parts were more touched than others by modern day stuff but that was just something they had to live with. After all, they needed the road and the railroad track to supply the village with food and other things that were needed to sustain the place they called home.
When he reached the end of his jog he stretched for a few minutes before heading down to the gym. There were already a few others in there when he arrived. Thundercloud was lifting weights. Rex was doing some acrobatics up in the rings and swinging between different ones from time to time. The nimbleness of that guy was fascinating. Ah, and over there Mac, Sliver and Night were having a friendly race on the tracks. To Kou it looked as if Night was going to win by a few meters, while Mac and Sliver were pretty much neck and neck.
He went over to where the sandbags hung and put on some gloves. Then he was off. He almost felt sorry for the sand bag. He landed kick after kick and punch after punch. By the time he was done he was drenched in sweat, his tattoo covered skin glistening.
When he left the gym he didn't go the same way he'd come, but instead chose the way that led straight to his own house. That was one of the great things about living in one of the houses next to the main road. Since the gym was underneath the road and those houses it had been decided that those houses would have tunnels connecting them to the gym. Mainly for easier access during winter when snow usually came in great abundance and made topside travel a bit tricky.
As he stood in his shower washing away all the sweat he suddenly paused while scrubbing his chest. He'd been looking down at his chest while doing it, but not really looking. All of a sudden he took notice of the tattoos covering that area of his body. They weren't just there. He had tattoos all over his body. All of them tribals. Nowadays they served as a reminder of a time long passed, a time he'd sooner forget. None of his friends knew anything about his past, at least not that part. He never spoke of it, and they probably knew better than to ask. Most of the people here had troubled pasts after all so they probably felt sympathetic about his unwillingness to bring it up. He sighed and shook his head.
-"No point dwelling on the past anyway. I couldn't change it even if I wanted to." He took another look at his tattoos and smiled again. "Besides, they've kind of grown on me. I wouldn't be me without them."
Motto
There's always a silver lining. Sometimes you just need a magnifying glass to see it.
