In the town of Hoofington, a young pony slumbered. Beneath her soft blankets she felt safe, comforted. She was not the only filly in her class with a blank flank, but she was slowly becoming that way. Her best friend, Steel Crescent, had already gotten his. Following Crescent family tradition, his was a very special sigil akin to that of a moon sliver. He was the first to come to her defense when the taunts began to fly, but that didn’t make her feel any better. She wanted to be special. She wanted to find her hidden talent and display it proudly. She wanted her family to be proud.

Her dreams were haunted by the clopping of hooves on hard cobblestone, pounding as though the very hounds of Tartaurus were chasing some poor pony through the town. Darkness covered everything, blinding her sight. She could not see the pony, but she could hear its sobs...

She awoke the next morning with the cry of the roosters, sweat dampening her fur and her heart racing. Chilled to the bone she rose form her bed and trembled her way to the bath. Her mother smiled down at her, her face full of warmth and love.

“Did you sleep well, Inky?”

The young pony shook her head.

“Not really, mama. I had a bad dream...”

The older pony frowned at her daughter.

“I’m sorry to hear, love. Let’s get you cleaned up and you can tell me all about it.”

As her mother scrubbed her coat clean, Inky recounted the terrible nightmare. She shivered involuntarily as she spoke of the sobs. As she rinsed the shampoo from her body she thought the voice from the night was familiar.

Her mother was waiting with a soft towel as she crested the water.

“Come on, Inky. We have to get you dried and fed- you can’t be late today!”

Inky’s green eyes widened as she shook out her fur.

“Oh hay, I almost forgot! Mrs. Jubilee’s special surprise!”

With her brown coat still damp she grabbed her satchel and raced toward the door.

“Inky, wait! You forgot your-”

The child was already gone, leaving a cloud of dust in her wake.

“- breakfast,” her mother finished with a small smile.

Inky burst through the door, panting. She wasn’t a very fit pony, and taking the trip at a full gallop had taxed her small frame. Her teacher, the white-coated Mrs. Jubilee, smiled down at her.

“You’re just in time for the big announcement, miss Inky Hooves. Take your seat and we’ll begin.”

She took her seat next to Steel, still fighting to catch her breath.

“Good morning, Inky Hooves! Did you sleep well?”

She shook her head as her heart rate leveled out.

“Not really. I’d have asked to stay home, but this was too important to miss! I can’t wait to see what Mrs. Jubilee’s super special secret surprise is!”

Mrs. Jubilee beamed at her class as they began to settle down.

“Now, fillies and colts, I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seats! I promised a surprise, didn’t I? I’d like to introduce you to a very special guest, mister Golden Scroll of Golden Scroll Books! I’m sure you’re all away of his foal stories, aren’t you? “The Mare and the Orchard”, “The Silly Filly”, and “Mother Hen’s Bedtime Stories”, for example!”

Inky’s eyes opened wide with shock.

“Oh my gosh, Steel! I LOVE those books! They were my favorite when I was a little foal!”

The gray stallion bowed to the class and took a seat near the chalkboard.

“My little ponies, I’m here to talk to you today about your future. How many of you know what you want to be when you’re older?”

Only Steel raised his hoof.

“I’m going to be an architect, like my mother.”

Golden nodded to him.

“That’s a fine goal, son. With the right education, you could go far with that. Anyone else?”

Strawberry Belle raised her hoof next.

“I want to make jams!”

“That sounds like a delicious prospect, little miss.”

No other ponies spoke up. Some shuffled their hooves, some glanced down at their desks with embarrassment.

“Well, don’t you ponies fret! I’m here to discuss something very important with you- scholarships! My company, Golden Scroll Books, is currently holding a competition to find the best young writer in Equestria! Five lucky winners will get a scholarship to the school of their choice- if you want to attend Canterlot University, you can! if you want to head out to Manehattan and join the Bucking Buffalos, you may! I’ve given your lovely teacher all the information you’ll need. Remember, you can be anything your heart desires with the right education!”

“Now, class, it has to be a children’s story. You have two weeks to turn it in! Good luck, and use your imaginations to their fullest potential! I’m letting you all out early today so that you can get started before lunchtime!”

The class cheered as they galloped out of the room, leaving Golden Scroll and Mrs. Jubilee staring after them flabbergasted.

“Well, it’s good to see your class so enthused!”

They had a good laugh as they exited the schoolhouse.

“So what are you going to write about, Inky? I was thinking I’d do something with manticores and fire-breathing dragons and beautiful mares in distress.”

As she trotted along, Inky kept her eyes on her hooves. Steel’s idea sounded AWESOME. How could she possibly compare to that? She wanted to attend school somewhere else, somewhere... fancier. She didn’t like living in such a small place, where everyone knew her. She had no idea what she wanted to be when she grew up, she just didn’t want to be it in Hoofington.

“I... I dunno, Steel. I was actually thinking of writing about my nightmare...”

“That’s probably not very foal-friendly, don’t you think?”

She hung her head.

“Yeah. Golden Scroll would probably hate it. I should skip it.”

“No, Inky!”

Steel held out a hoof and stopped the brown filly in her tracks.

“You have to! I can’t submit a story if you don’t, it wouldn’t be fair! C’mon, you’re pretty imaginative, I’m sure you can think of something! Just put your heart into it!”

Inky heaved a sigh and shook her flat mane.

“Steel... I don’t know what I’d do without you. I’ll write a story so that we can both enter that competition! I’ll see you in class tomorrow, okay?”

Steel beamed and gave the young pony a nudge before racing off home.

“I’ll make you proud, Steel. I’ll write an awesome story for Golden Scroll!”
