Story:

.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

In a sterile room lit by florescent lights, there sat a doctor in his over sized white coat behind a desk. Two nervous looking Jollins sat across from the stone faced doctor. The sober Kumos sat with both of his paws folded over his desk. No one had any desire to say anything but each pet knew a difficult discussion was about to take place. Before delivering the tough news, the Kumos sighed.
"Sir and madam, your child has brain damage, which could be caused from a birth defect, genetics, or a number of other issue. The majority of the damage is located in the left hemisphere of her brain. We're not sure if she'll ever be able to communicate with her peers because of the location of the damage. The brain is a puzzling organ, we don't exactly understand it completely. There might be treatment in the future but we need to see her symptoms as she grows before we do anything."
"So, where does that leave us, Doctor?" inquired the anxious parents. "Just take her home and bring her back regularly for check ups and brain scans."
Looking at the doctor through teary eyes, Shona's mother says, "How could this happen? She's only two years old! Shona is just a toddler! I mean... I remember holding her for the first time, her eyes were so alert. I had never seen such big and beautiful green eyes. And now...?"

.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

"Happy birthday, Shona! Wow, you're seven years old now. You've grown up so much!" exclaims an ecstatic father.
"Mmmmmhhhmmmm," nods Shona.
"That's right, Shona! Birthday. Can you say birthday?" says Shona's mother, full of hope.
"......" Shona looked into her mother's eyes blankly.
"No? It is okay... I didn't think you would be able to anyway. We'll get there. Right, Shona?" replies Shona's mother.
Recognizing a familiar word, Shona shouts, "Shu shu!"
"That's right, Shu shu" sighs her mother.

*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*.~.*

"Honey, don't you think it is weird that the only thing Shona can say is, 'Shu shu' and now she's almost a teenager?" sighs Shona's father.
"Well, she's picking up a bit of sign language now too. Don't be so hard on her dear. She isn't like other kids."
"No, she's not. She can't talk. She can't run and play. All she does is play with shiny toys."
"You remember what the doctor says, keeping her entertained with intriguing, moving objects might help her motor skills."
"Even the toys won't fix her brain." says Shona's father, his voice getting louder.
"No. They won't. Neither will your yelling."

After an awkward pause, Shona's father quietly asks, "Do you ever wish we had a normal kid?"
"Even if I did, it wouldn't change anything. I haven't allowed myself to think about that so I wouldn't be discontented with our daughter. I would never give her up for adoption. She is my world. She just needs special care. I see something in her eyes. I know you don't understand her but I don't think anyone ever will. She's in her own little world...

But that's alright....

She's alright."

.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

They think I can't understand what is going on but I can. Although I can't communicate to them I can understand what they are saying. My body is my prison. Although there is so much I want to say and do, I cannot do any of it. I want to tell my mother that I am so thankful that she never gives up on me but I cannot. I want to show my father that I am not a disappointment but I cannot. I want to chat with friends but I cannot. I want to run, dance, and sing but I cannot.

I cannot.

.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

Instead, I collect things that have bright lights inside and can move but cannot speak.

Things like me.

.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

The one thing that my body can't stop me from doing is loving and laughing. And I love to laugh. Bright colors are my favorite ones because they express something without words. Dazzling hues inspire happiness within me and laughter bubbles out. Colors express what they feel without a body, movement, sound, or a mind. The spectrum gives me hope that someday I will be able to express myself.
