He runs a dead things/cabinet-of-curiosities type shop for which he prepares the specimens. He knows what he's doing, really, and it's because of this that anyone puts up with him. At least in this context. That said, he isn't terrible in the slightest- he just derives amusement from mildly terrible things (messing with people)- and the fact that he refuses to associate with anyone who's actually terrible betrays this.
He just, you know, poisons people occasionally.
