Rainbow Veins

Years ago I was lost. My colors faded along with my spirit... my bright colors had become dull. I was alone. Time went on and nothing changed. Day by day, I spend my time laying in a cave watching life pass by on the outside. No one ever wandered in the cave... it was desolate. I too had become desolate. Looking at me now, you would never guess that I spent many months alone in the cave I was born in.

I was afraid to leave the cave. I was born there and I had never left. My mother used to be here with me - until one day she never came back. She used to leave and bring me back food so I didn't have to eat the algae growing on the far wall. There was a crater filled with water inside the cave as well, but sometimes she would surprise me and bring me water from outside. The water she brought was so much clearer than the water inside the cave. One day, she never returned. I wanted to go out and look for her - but, I'd never left the cave before. I wouldn't even know which way to turn first. I opted to keep waiting. I survived by drinking the murky cave water and nibbling on the algae that grew there. Eventually, my colors vanished and I was a few shades of grey.

One day, while drinking my murky water, I heard laughter. I turned quickly and saw a young girl running in my direction. Shouting came from behind her "Come back!" The girl just laughed and kept on running. Following her, a young boy came rushing in. He stared at the girl who was now knelt beside me.

"Can we keep her?" The girl had scooped me up in her arms at this point. I wanted to run, but I had become to weak - so I let her scoop me up. She didn't look like she was going to hurt me. I was scared, but at the same time, I was at peace.

The young couple had brought me outside the cave. When the sunlight hit me, my colors exploded and my shades of grey turned back to the bright reds and blues and greens they were so long ago. I looked around and saw a huge crater filled with water. That must have been where my mother gathered my fresh water from. I sprung from the girls arms and took a drink. The girl brought me some fresh berries like mother used to bring me and I chowed down on them. This girl had saved me.

I don't know what happened to my mother, but I trust she is looking out for me somehow. I know it must have been her that sent this girl running into the cave. This girl, my new owner, has taken great care of me. She saved me. I now run freely through the forest and when I return home, she always has fresh water and a bowl of berries waiting for me. She married the boy that ran after her that day. They raised a young girl of their own. Their daughter came to the forest with me and I watched her climb trees and gather berries to take home to her mother.

This lovely family brought joy back into my life. They taught me to live again after I had felt dead for so long. The little girl that came running into the cave put the rainbow back in my veins.
