Captain Andre-Paul

Golden Coins and poker chips dance in my head; my life is the cards in my hand, my choices are chance... Life is a roulette table, spinning constantly as your ball tries to land on the number you just put your money on. Gambling is my bane, my vice, and my death. At least my wife thinks so.

I glance to the door and back to the table. I'm at this table, how long have I been here. Five minutes right? Maybe a hour... or ten. I'm at this table, waiting anxiously in front of my chips again. I'm golden, I'm ready. I move these chips, my treasure, to the center of the table, as the dealer hands me two cards. The table, the table, the cards. A nine and a two; Hit me. A two. Hit me. An eight.

Twenty-one, I win. I knew I was golden, I'm leaving here rich. She can't hate me today. Another game, another chip gone; after five games, I'm bored. I glance at the door, then back to the table, the table and my chips. We're pulling out the dice now. I grab my dice and put a handful of chips on the table; I shake my hands and throw the dice at the far wall of the table. I happen to glance up at the door, and my heart stops for a moment at the three dark figures entering the room. How many chips was that, how much did I throw down... I don't have a chance to look before I'm sneaking away. I'm in no mood to run into them today.

Damn, half of my money is gone now, but the night is still young. I head down to the dock and check on my boat. It's the only thing that I really have left... other than the wife. She'll be angry tonight.

There are sailors down the way, playing cards and roulette; I need to win again tonight, I know that I can. I'm smarter than them; this is my world, my life. I grab a bottle from my captain's quarters and walk down the beach. Toss the bottle around to the boys, who welcome me to their table, the table with a portable spinning wheel. I grab the chips from my pocket and throw them down over a red square which reads 27, my lucky number. It never fails me. The wheel spins fast and faster, the motion sickening - spinning round and round like my head. It slows and stops and the ball hits it's home on black 31.

I growl and shout out, and my heart beats to fast, as I pull out my remaining chips. I have four left... it's nothing. I stare at the table, the table, the table for a moment with a sigh and realize that I have just enough left for a beer at the bar where the wife works. I might as well end the night there, she'll be angry anyway.

I'm not watching were I am going, as I walk up the avenue and turn a corner, almost running into someone standing there. I look up to apologize, when I'm grabbed by the arm and slammed against the wall. When the stars fad from my eyes, I realize who it is - Jessie, Travis, and Jon Jon... the Bad Luck Trio. Just what I needed on a night like this; hadn't I already gotten past these guys today.

"Where's the money!?" shouts Travis, the one holding me to the wall. I stay silent; I'm actually pretty foolish, at least my wife thinks so; but I'm not stupid enough to tell them that I don't have their money. They all start shouting about the same time, threatening me harm, threatening my ol' lady.. but I'm not afraid of pain, and they won't actually hurt her - they've used that threat before. But when they start threatening to take my boat, that's when I get worried. I need that boat, it's all I've got... that and the wife.

"Woah, woah boys - Let's all calm down a moment... I think I have a way we can work this out. How about a lil double or nothing type of game?"

The boys glance at each other for a moment, and Travis loosens his hold.

"Fine... but we do things our way... Captain." Jessie grins as he pulled out his gun, a Twilight Six-Shooter and empties all of the shots but one and hands the gun over to me. I gulp and laugh, thinking he's joking... he has to be joking right, just joking?

No, he's serious. The game just got real, and yet the gambler in me purrs. I realise that I am golden, I am ready. I was born to do this, this is my life, my world.

I grin like a madman and spin the barrel of the gun. I hold it to my temple and still grinning, stare Jessie down.

I start to pull the trigger, "You're gonna feel really foolish when this doesn't work Jessie; you're out of your league with me, you always ha...."
