My tale...

"Mayumi! Mayumi!"
I spun around at the sound of my name, readying my bow in case I required it. You never really knew who, or what, could sneak up on you, so I constantly carried my bow and a quiver of arrows with me.

I frowned when my eyes locked on those of a small, bearded dwarf. He was clad in an ankle-length navy, red and gold robe adorned with the regions emblem.

"Yes?" I raised an eyebrow at the dwarf. Clearly he'd had orders from the ruler to come here and locate me, which wouldn't have been a tricky task. I'd been trudging along this desolate dirt road for a while now, and had only passed a couple of fellow elves so far. I was rather surprised I hadn't heard the dwarf approaching, as dwarves weren't the most graceful of creatures.

"I-I am here on o-o-orders from the r-ruler," the dwarf stammered. He was eyeing my bow nervously, as though he thought I'd make him my next target.

"Right," I nodded, wondering what was coming next.

"He wants you to help the quest group slay the demon!" the dwarf announced quickly. He seemed very uncomfortable, which I guess was understandable. It was hard not to be portrayed as menacing and intimidating when you had been officially dubbed a skilled archer when you were only a teenager.

I had been living alone, fending for myself, since I was about 9. I'd never really gotten on with my parents at all, so I'd made my own decision and left them. Not that they'd really cared much, to be honest. Sure, they'd acted surprised and scared, they had even tried searching for me, to no avail as I stayed well hidden, but they'd done that so their elven friends would think they were caring, not because they actually wanted to find me, and I had had no inclination to go back home at the time, and I still didn't. After ten years, I still didn't miss my parents, and I doubted they missed me either, wherever they were.

I couldn't help remembering the night when I'd left:
My mother had just been yelling at me for accidentally leaving a pair of my shoes by the front door (she had tripped over them, though she didn't actually injure herself, she was just unreasonably angry), and my father, as usual, backed her up and began yelling at me, too. As I was only 9 at the time, I remember crying, which only provoked remarks such as, and I remember this vividly: "You are such a little baby, Mayumi, when are you ever going to grow up?" which had come directly from my mother's mouth. I guess that was part of what made me want to move out of their home and prove myself, which is exactly what I did.

"Er, Mayumi?" I heard the dwarf say in a small voice. I shook my head, clearing away the memories.

"Demon, you said?" I asked, genuinely perplexed. I hadn't heard of any demons in the region recently.

"It just recently rose from the ground," the dwarf informed me.

"I see," I said, pinching my lips together. To be honest, I wasn't particularly keen on helping out. I mean, what had the ruler done for me?

"Please," the dwarf begged, "it might go rampant and kill!"

The dwarf looked frightened, and I wondered just how petrifying this demon actually was.

"Well," I said, after a few minutes of thinking about it, "I suppose I could help out. Do you have some way for me to get to where this demon is?"

The dwarf gestured behind him, where a magnificent white stallion seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, already saddled up, ready to go.

"You can ride, yes?" the dwarf asked, and I nodded. Most elves had the capability to ride a horse, as did most dwarves.

"And where am I riding to?" I queried as I walked towards the horse, offering it my hand to smell.

"Near the castle. You can't miss it, the demon is enormous," the dwarf said, watching as I hoisted myself onto the back of the horse.

"Great," I muttered, and without another word to the dwarf, I turned the horse around and cantered off, leaving behind a shroud of dust.

Due to the speed of the horse and the fact that the castle actually wasn't too far away, we arrived in less than twenty minutes of hard-out galloping. During the ride, I'd been careful to keep my bow and all eight arrows intact. I wasn't sure eight arrows would be anywhere near enough, but it was all I had.

I pulled the enormous stallion beneath me to a halt, which proved a rather tricky endeavor, considering his size and strength, and gaped at the scene before me. Maybe a hundred or so meters from the castle, and about 200 meters from me and the horse, was a colossal hunk of black reptilian demon, half hidden by various ropes that had obviously failed to bring it to the ground.

I could see several things being thrown at the demon: spears, pitchforks, knives. No arrows. I was kind of grateful for that, to be honest. It was my time to shine, I just hoped my eight arrows would be enough.

I dismounted and patted the horse on his nose, he was staring at the demon with a confused look on his face. He wasn't sure what to make of it, and neither was I. "Stay here," I murmured to him, although I doubted he needed any persuasion. Had I the option, I would stay safely back here, too. I left the horse beside a dreary looking old oak and set off at a walk down a cobblestone path, which was used as a back entrance to the castle for servants and slaves.

I knew what I needed to do. Aim at the hideous demon and slay it, which obviously all the others recruited for the job had failed to do. I respected their attempts, but now was a time for successful attempts, not failed attempts.

I began jogging, then quickened my pace to a sprint as I watched the demon rear on to its three back legs, it seemed as though the demon had not two, not four but six legs, three at the back, three up front and begin lumbering further towards the castle. I approached quickly and surveyed the scene.

Five muscular men all dressed in shining armor were running after the demon, throwing all kinds of weapons at it without actually aiming. I didn't say anything to the men as I approached. They all looked caught up in killing the demon, as though it were a competition to see who would be the first to shoot it down.

One of them did stop and look at me with recognition on his face, but I didn't know him, so I assumed he just knew me due to my archery skills. I was too shy to say anything along the lines of "I'm here to slay the dragon", and he left quickly anyway, with a somewhat bemused look on his face.

I guess I'd have to just get in there, though I wasn't sure what the "tough" men would think of a teenage girl slaying a demon, but whatever, someone had to do the job, and clearly these high and mighty men were failing miserably.

I readied my bow and arrow and began tearing towards the demon full speed, holding my bow in front of me. The demon was right by the castle now, and it had begun clawing at the brick building with thick, black talons it seemed to have produced out of nowhere.

I wasn't close enough to get a good shot to its heart or head, the two places I assumed would kill it or at least seriously injure it if shot at, so I moved closer so that I was standing right beside the five men.

All of them were drenched in sweat. They were wasting their energy by being careless, I could tell, and soon I imagined they would be bent over, gasping uncontrollably while the demon continued destroying everything in sight.

"What are you doing?" one of the men asked, scoffing at my raised bow.

I ignored him. Sometimes I found it was better to stay quiet than speak up, especially to people you didn't know.

I concentrated hard on my target. I was in perfect range; all I needed to do was shoot at the perfect moment.

"Hey, little elf," one of the men sniggered, waving an arm in front of my face.

I lowered my bow and glared at the man. "Unlike you, I'm actually trying to get a good shot at the thing," I snarled, raising my bow once more.

"Good luck with that, then," he chortled cheerily, as though an enormous demon wasn't destroying the royal castle before his eyes.

The demon was still in the same position, tearing out brick after brick from the castle. I imagined or more accurately hoped that they had evacuated the castle already, although it was hard to tell from my position.

The castle had numerous turrets placed here and there, and the demon had already ripped three of them from the roof, leaving vast holes and causing rubble to cascade downwards and land in the rose bushes below.

"Are you going to kill the demon?" another of the men asked in a sweet voice, mocking me.

"Yes," I said determinedly.

They all laughed, and the largest one of all bellowed, "Let's see, then."

Resolutely, I aimed my bow carefully, squinting to make sure it would land perfectly where the demon's heart should be. My only doubt was that the demon didn't have a heart, or if it did, it was located elsewhere. Once I was certain my arrow would land on target, I let go of the string and the arrow went flying.

It was almost as though everything went slow motion. I could hear the arrow whistling as it flew through the air, right towards the demons heart, and then, suddenly, it was all over. The arrow had hit its target.

I watched as the demon roared, then fell to the ground, knocking over more of the castle as it did so, but all that mattered was that the demon had been slain, by me. I had no more business there, so I turned around and stalked away, carrying with me seven arrows. Turned out eight had been more than enough.
