Life isn't so random after all...
It started with the 1968 penny I picked up on the curb of the street in Hells Kitchen where all the barbers congregate. The penny reflected the stream of sunlight through the half-shown clouds that meant it was about to rain. It was April 9th sometime last year and I was late for a mail clerk job interview for the Post.
A taxi driver with an obnoxiously curled mustache veered over the curb approaching where I stood on the side walk. "You need a ride, kid?" he asked as he twisted a bendy straw between his fingers. I looked behind me and shrugged my shoulders. I ducked into the cab that smelled like pickles and salami. "Where to?" he said as he lowered the R&B station playing on the radio. "The Post," I replied.
A clown in full makeup nine feet down the street hailed the cab down. As we slowed at the over-jammed traffic light, he squeezed his way between cars into the cab. "The nearest pub, if you please." I tried not to laugh. "Bad day?" I asked. He smiled broadly, showing the contrast of teeth against red clown lips, "The worst".
It started pouring before the light ever turned green. A woman with platinum blonde hair and pink frills coming out even from her ankles started spinning in circles. "No! I'm ruined!" She spotted the taxi from the curb and whipped the door open. Extending her long, lace umbrella in, she sat down by the clown. Her pink ruffles were stained by the clown's cheap purple suit dye. "I don't care where these fools need to go. The embassy suites! Now!"
It took me a moment, but I reached into the pocket of my coat and felt the penny. The cool copper rested against my finger tips as I turned to the lady and said, "Ma'am, I'm sure you have no need of this monetarily, but it has brought me the most phenomenal of luck and I'm sure it will do you well. Take this penny and have the best of my luck from here on out." As she slipped the penny into her pocket coat she turned purple. The taxi driver slowed down only to let the two cars in front of us through the lane. "Really, the best of luck, I muttered."
