From afar, strangers are astounded by my glowing beauty. I am intriguing to them – a fascinating creature with a deep purple halo that shines so bright it engulfs me. I draw strangers to me like the river is drawn to the sea. They want to know the power I possess that allows me to radiate such beauty but as I gaze up at them moving closer; I’m crushed by a fear so potent, I forget how to breathe.
Fear because I have been here before and I already know the outcome of such encounters. As they move closer, the darkness seeps out from inside of me, an automatic reaction. It reaches out to these strangers like a blanket – It wants to possess them, own them too, like it does me. But they sense what dangers lay ahead and they begin to pull back. They are more astute than I was, for when I reach inside for the memory – I never saw it coming but I remember how it burns as it makes its way into your heart, your soul, it becomes everything you are and more, swallowing you whole until you are one with the shadows.
To protect my heart, I turn and walk away from these strangers. Not wanting them to know such bleakness. I couldn’t save myself. I am beautifully broken, but I can save them. They don’t have to know darkness but for some, like me, we are forever locked in its tight embrace.
