Just an ordinary day

Note: Uan is gaelic for 'Lamb' and Sioraf is Gaelic for 'Giraffe'.

Uan walked along the cobble road through to the center of town, today was different from every other day of the year. Not only on the account of it being Valentine's Day, but because for the once during this time of year she actually didn't mind the way everyone went walking by singing the old songs, playing on their flutes, and holding hands. In fact, the idea put a smile on her face. She could easily pick out the newly married couples as the majority of them could be found dancing around the fountain in the middle of the square. A crowd began to form to watch them and she made her way over. She watched the couples whirl around the crystal clear marvel, hair coming undone and cares flying. The partners came together, would separate and join with someone new, all the while keeping their eyes on their loved one. They wouldn't stray.

She didn't have a person of her own yet, but today she was more than happy to celebrate, even just for those who'd been lucky enough to find love. She wasn't sure what'd come over her this morning but she felt at peace. She watched as a young man with easy features came to sit next to her. She felt her face turn red, she'd never spoken to this boy and wasn't even sure if she'd met him before and felt this behavior to be a bit bold; if not odd. She began to scoot over enough to ease her anxiety when he flashed her a pained look, her quickly diverted his gaze and fidgeted with something in his hands. Uan was curious but didn't dare to try and peek as she was sure now that she'd insulted him, despite the little ball of anger that'd started in her belly she felt remorse wash over her. How could I be so rude? She thought, He's probably shy, maybe that's why he'd moved in with such quickness. To just dive in head-first, get the ball moving. Frustrated, she pulled her knees up to her chest and hugged them intently. She didn't notice that all the while she'd been murmuring to herself and when the boy began to chuckle her head shot up, his laugh was musical and it broke the walls Uan had so instinctively put up.

"What's so funny?" She wasn't unkind and she opened herself up, moving a little closer. The boy closed the gap between them and leaned in close as to catch her ear,"Everyone warned me that you were a bit...'off'. I just didn't think they'd be proven right so quickly!" Uan was taken aback by this and the walls shot back up, she scrambled to her feet and was about to storm off when his hand caught hers. She could feel the warmth of his hand and a tingle went up her arm, all rebellion was removed with such a simple gesture. Ha hadn't meant it to be mean, only an explanation, which she had asked for. She looked down at him and the remorse was plain on his face,"Do forgive me, I shouldn't have said that. I've been terribly rude, my name is Sioraf D. Cain and I'd be honored if you'd stay with me for awhile to enjoy this celebration." She wanted to reject the offer and go on to see all the delicacies the shops had to offer for a day as special as such but she couldn't see the harm in staying with him. Besides, she reasoned, if I grow weary of his company I could always just leave him behind.

She nodded and knelt back down so as to be eye-level once again. "I'd be happy to have an escort. Oh, and as long as we're exchanging names, I'm-", she was stopped abruptly by his change in gestures, now waving his hands in front of him, signaling for her to stop. "Darling, I know exactly who you are...Miss Tabitha Uan McHain."Though slightly disturbed, Uan could see how proud he was for knowing her full name and decided to let it go, clearly he'd asked around about her and he was here for a reason. But something did catch her attention that she just couldn't let go of,"Only ever call me Uan. Anything else will earn you a swift kick. Understand?" He agreed without much hesitation.

She sat at the edge of the fire and watched the flames leap and coil. She kept quiet and enjoyed the comfort of Sioraf's arm around her shoulder, she leaned into his side and let the memories of earlier that day flood over her. She was content and warm, she had good company and he wasn't bad looking either. Uan felt as if the smile plastered on her face would stay there forever. No harm had been done by spending the day with this boy and her nerves had settled long ago. She looked lovely in the firelight, her hair undone and tousled from their journey around the town, her cheeks a pale pink. Sioraf hummed quietly and the action sent a little vibration through his body and reached Uan. She looked up at his face and was surprised to see that he'd already been watching her with a small, content smile and warm eyes.

"You know, I have something for you. I meant to give it to you earlier but I forgot about it when I messed up our introductions." He reached into his coat pocket and held in his hand a withered white daisy. She couldn't help but be a little awestruck, it was her favorite flower. No one knew that but her older brother and he'd been long gone. For as how he could know, she was lost for words. "It was a lot prettier when I first picked it." He took her hand gently and placed the little flower in her palm, his hand remained over hers."But here."
When he removed his hand the flower was no longer wilted but a beautiful clean white and as new as could be. She didn't say anything, she couldn't say anything. She just met his eyes and sat with her jaw slightly dropped. Again he took her hand in his, the bonfire snapped and the flames leapt close to their feet. He drew nearer to her, and before she could ask what he was doing, he pressed his lips to hers.

When she dared to pull away her head swam and she had to hold onto him to keep from falling over. Her clumsiness amused him and he hugged her close."You are my Uan, My little Lamb."
She didn't argue but through the foggy-ness that clouded her thoughts she managed to make the connection and nod. She was his lamb and he was her giraffe. Her Sioraf.
