She comes on winter's edge. Her unwavering gaze is as cold as the snow she brings with her. Her gown and cloak are lined with the finest furs but it is merely for show. She no longer has need for warmth. Not even a wisp of steam passes her lips as she exhales. Any body heat disappeared long ago.
For she is a Winter Sidhe, a being created from the icy cold of her own frozen heart. The frigid winter winds follow her every step like the loyal fox who has not left her side since that fateful day so long ago.
She was once a cheerful forest nymph, the youngest of four sisters who lived in the valley of Everspring. Her eyes shone like emeralds and her smile was more welcome as the sun. She played in the meadows, danced in the forest and had conversations with animals and flowers. All who knew her loved her and rejoiced at her presence.
But there was only on who had won her favor: a handsome satyr with whom she was madly in love. Her heart swelled at the sight of him and his kiss on her lips was sweeter than honey. He was a gifted poet and songwriter who claimed her as his beloved muse. How many times she fell asleep to the music of his flute she could not tell. Indeed, her happiness knew no bounds.
But all of that would soon change.
One morning, she was in the meadow stringing flowers for a crown. A messenger dove landed near her and dropped a letter from her dearest. She opened it, eager to see what sweet words he had bestowed upon her. But her smile quickly faded as she soon realized it was not the love sonnet she had expected.
He wrote of how she would always be in his heart but he was in love with another. Several weeks before he had caught sight of a raven-haired beauty as she bathed and had became instantly entranced. The woman never strayed from his mind even as he strode arm-in-arm with the girl he serenaded until she slept. The songs he played were secretly for her.
The young nymph's heart sank even farther when she read on to discover that his new lover was none other than her eldest sister! He went on to say that they had eloped before the sun had risen that morning and had no plans to return.
Throwing the note to the ground she ran to find him, praying that it was all some horrid joke. She hoped to find him and he would tease her about his silly prank. She would cry and tell him how horrible it all was then he would take her in his arms and apologize saying that he would never dream of leaving her.
As she dashed through the forest she came upon her two other siblings. They were greatly distressed and showed her a letter their older sister had left for them.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, the younger nymph took the note and read it to herself. It was painfully similar to the satyr's and just as succinctly cruel. There were no excuses, no apologies and no remorse. In that instant her poor heart shattered to pieces and she fell to the ground. Rivers of tears fell from her eyes as she wept uncontrollably.
Oh, how her sisters tried to comfort her. They patted her hand, stroked her hair and rocked her in their arms. They told her she was better off, that they too were betrayed and that satyrs were known to have wandering eyes. But it did no good. The little nymph's sobs continued so loudly that half the forest wondered what creature could make such a sound.
As time went on there was a noticeable change in the nymph. She no longer smiled, her eyes lost their color and sparkle, her once-deep brown hair faded to a ghastly white and her skin became pale as death. Her playfulness had diminished and she gave off such a cold aura that anything she touched became covered in a freezing and deadly frost. A butterfly froze to death instantly after alighting on her shoulder.
Soon the nymph was summoned by the Dryad Queen, ruler over Everspring. She was told that she was to be banished that night as she was no longer welcome in a place that had never known such coldness.
Without uttering a word the nymph turned on her heels and departed from the only home she had ever known. Her family and friends wept bitterly but not one tear fell from her own eyes. Her only companion was a fox who's scarlet coat turned pure white as soon as it neared her and now followed her like a lost child.
Now she wanders the world leaving winter in her wake. The heart that once beat with the warmth of love and child-like happiness now emanates the bitter callousness of a soul scarred by the pain of betrayal. Her former life is all but forgotten and she is forbidden to return unless she finds some way to melt her heart and warm her soul.
All it would take is a single tear....
