---A Strong Heritage
Boltik and his pack are descendants of wolves that assisted Genghis Khan’s rule. In 1220 a pack of wolves aligned with troops led by Genghis Khan’s loyal general Subutai in Russia after the defeat of the Khwarezmid Empire. Against their usual countenance of obvious hate towards humans, they were suffering that winter after vigorous fighting and finally gaining territory from another native pack. A man from the nearby camp was collecting fire wood and found Bolitk’s great great grandfather, Meraq, in the snow weak and hurt. The Mongol had sympathy for the wolf and carried him to the fire in the middle of the camp. After a quick recovery of only three days, Meraq was back in great condition and all the while his pack was watching from a distance. They created an unspoken pact with the humans that assured them warmth, shelter, and a full stomach in return for helping them with hunting and tracking in the harsh climate that Russia had to offer. This was to thank the Mongols for the great care that one Mongol man showed towards Meraq. The wolf pack was later called Gan Chinua, or “Steel Wolf” in Mongolian, by the Mongols who treated them as equals. Twenty years later Volga Bulgaria was conquered and the campaign ended with the second generation of Meraq’s pack still traveling with the Mongols. Gan Chinua went on through Persia, Armenia, Mongolia and Europe. In the fifth generation of the pack was born Boltik. The Mongol reign was over and there were only stories left about Meraq and the pack’s beginning. Now Boltik was to succeed after his father, Korhee. Gan Chinua mainly settled in Russia and controlled most of the territory not inhabited by humans. They grew from eight in Meraq’s rule to three hundred and forty under Korhee. The small band that Boltik led for hunting was about six in number counting him. Daring and brave by nature and with a strong will seeded deep into his very being, his small group was always the one to venture the furthest from the safety of familiar land.
----The Night Brought
On a dark night when the moon was full Boltik and his band went out for the hunt and traveled much farther than they had before. Making their way through the uncharted area, Boltik wanted to claim it all for his father’s greatness. So after two days of constant marking and discovery, the wolves sensed they were being followed. In a blur of dust and the sounds of rushing paws barely tipping the earth, the wolves scattered in all directions to confuse their predators. Once Boltik felt he was far away enough from harm he started making his way back to the spot where they first separated. Not one of his comrades was there. Then he felt a sharp sting in his neck and blacked out.
----A Witchdoctor
When he awoke he couldn’t move his legs nor lift his head and was surrounded by a circle of smoke. A dark skinned man was over him chanting and moving his body in contorted positions while dangling bones and teeth on a necklace over his head. He blacked out again. This time when he woke up he sat up and saw that dark skinned man in the corner of what seemed to be a tent, but not like the ones the Mongols made. When the man spoke to him, he understood what he was saying and was able to answer him in the same language. The man explained that he was a witchdoctor for the local tribe and he was protecting Boltik from the hunters that kill wolves for their fur. He informed Boltik of his friends’ deaths and that he was found after the witchdoctor heard a cry in the middle of the day and a mighty spirit told him to 'find the wolf'. The witchdoctor had to protect him from the hunters that came by to offer prayers and receive healing from the hunt. So, to disguise the wolf he transformed him into a doll that night before any visitors came to the tent and continued this practice for the whole week Boltik was asleep. As a side affect, the spell stops Boltik’s aging process so he looks the age he was when blessed by the witchdoctor. The spell is irreversible, but he can control when he changes into his toy form. He left in the safety of night with two new gifts; speech and transformation… into a child’s toy.
---Moving On
For fear that his father and the pack wouldn’t accept him with his new gifts, and suspiciously being the only survivor of his group to return, he vowed to never go back. On he went being a lone wolf without a place to call his own and never staying in one area for long. He entered into a country called Romania and stopped halfway through in Harghita to rest for a while. Soon he realized what benefits he had in such land where rivers were close by, warm natural springs were available for those fiercely cold days, and the dense forest was all around. He settled far back into the woods.
---Back on Track
Finally, his old self returned and he was again that brave, daring wolf he was before that night occurred. He hungered for a new beginning and wanted to explore. He was becoming more and more intrigued by the people in this little place, specifically how they lived.
---A New Wind
Months passed and he coaxed himself to go into a town at night just to meander in its dirt roads and possibly spot a human. As he was running through the depths of the forest, now considered home, he caught the scent of something he never knew before. Immediately he started following the trail to find its source but as soon as he thought he had cornered the suspect, nothing was found. This carried on into the night until out of no where something jumped on his back and pinned him to the ground to where he couldn’t get up. When he tried to roll over to see his much anticipated acquaintance he heard a little girl’s voice whisper into his ear, “Don’t move, or you’ll die”. Without a second thought he started to laugh. Insulted and alarmed that she could hear his laughter as such and not a howl or beastly cackle, she stood up abruptly. “What are you?” Setting his balance on all four paws he was surprised to see a little girl with dark brown shoulder length hair dressed in dark clothes. Her bright green eyes were reflecting the moonlight and they showed a sense of wonder for him. “I am Boltik, the master of these woods.” With a confused look she reached out to pet him. “Are you nice? Can I touch you?” Stepping back, he showed a grimace but then accepted the warmth from her fingertips. “And who are you?” he asked as her hand grazed his forehead. “I’m Lidiya, Lidiya Pavlov”, she responded then lowered her head as if ashamed of some great deed, “I’m a rogue vampire…”
---Carried Away
Ever since that fateful day Boltik accompanied Lidiya to wherever she went. And years went by without either aging but they grew closer and closer. At night Boltik would transform into his doll self to be cuddled by Lidiya or stay in true form and shield her from the cold. Then came a day in the dead of winter when they were passing through a city in the mist of night and Lidiya wanted to stop to rest. She was weak because there was so little to feed on and no shelter she could take refuge. So at the end of an ally she curled up in a corner with Boltik as a wolf doll, held close in her arms. That is when another vampire found her while out on a hunt and scooped her up to save her from the elements, never knowing of Boltik.
