Nothing out the window.

Still nothing.

Why is there no one here?

Cheetottee angrily closed the curtains and paced back and forth along the green carpet. “All I want is some company. Is that too much to ask for?” she snapped. Her pacing slowed as she thought. “I suppose it was my idea to live this far away from everyone else.” Cheetottee came to a stop and drooped her shoulders. Tired of the little cottage and it’s mocking emptiness, she stepped outside.

A strong breeze blew through, throwing her hair about her head. A crowd of travelers waved as they passed and she nodded her head in greeting. Although the chances were slim, Cheetottee always hoped a group would stay to talk. But then again, she had nothing interesting to share.

She watched them until they disappeared from sight and turned to walk back to the cottage. In the distance, she heard a strange chiming noise. Her curiosity flared and against her better judgement, she headed towards the source. She followed it for what seemed to be half a day and several miles to a dense thicket of trees and looked through. There was nothing in sight but still the noise persisted.

Ignoring the angry scratches that quickly formed on her bare arms and legs, Cheetottee pushed through the tightly packed branches. Once on the other side she stood still and listened for the chimes. They seemed to be sounding from all around her but she could see nothing that would be responsible for the noise.

“Where is it coming from?” she whispered to herself.

“From all around you.” Cheetottee spun to face a tall man. “Hello, my name is Arswert.” He moved forward and gestured to the trees. “There are wind chimes hanging in the trees.”

“Oh, of course. I supposed they’re yours.” She said excitedly. “They make the most beautiful sound.”

“They’re not mine. In fact, one of them belongs to you.” He said. Cheetottee frowned, confused by his words. “The chimes called you here. You must take what is yours.”

“But how do I know which is mine.” Cheetottee asked. She slowly examined the hanging chimes. A pair of hands covered her eyes.

“You will hear it.”

The wind suddenly picked up again and a surge of chiming surrounded Cheetottee. One set of chimes were sending out a perfect set of notes, but its location still seemed unclear.

Slowly, its sound began to rise in volume above the others. She moved forward until her hands brushed against the trunk of a tree. Her eyes flew open and she spotted the source of the perfect notes. A set of gold color chimes hung around a glass sun medallion about the size of her hand. Cheetottee reached up and plucked them off the tree branch, listening to the quiet noises they made as she moved them.

“That was amazing!” Cheetottee exclaimed. “Do people come here often?”

“Not as often as they used to, things have changed. Once there were Chime Groves all over the world. On windy nights, there wasn’t a house that wasn’t filled with music.” Arswert said forlornly. Cheetottee smiled at the thought. “But no one seems to have the time or passion to craft chimes anymore, nor to go searching.”

“I think… I think I could try.”

/Several Months Later/

Brightly colored leaves crunched under Cheetottees feet as she moved through the trees around her home. A crisp autumn wind rushed by, bringing the scent of early snow with it. Winter was on its way.

Along with the winters smell came a chorus of chimes. Cheetottee smiled as the bright sunlight reflected off several metal and glass wind chimes. Leaves crunched behind her and she turned to face Arswert. They clasped hands in a quick greeting. “Hello my friend, it is good to see you.” Cheetottee said.

“And you. Your collection has grown since last I saw it.” Arswert observed.

“It’s started to get so cold. I hate to leave the house, especially when the fire is going. Making the chimes keeps me from going crazy. Unfortunately, my supplies are becoming less and less.” She said sheepishly. Arswert chuckled and reached into his bag.

“Luckily the cold does not bother me as much. I found these by the river bank.” He dopped a small pile of stones into her hands. They had been worn to a glossy smoothness by the constant rushing of the river. But what really caught her attention was the variety of colors. It was like looking at a rainbow.

“Thank you so much!” Cheetottee exclaimed, stowing them safely in her pocket. Voices from the road pulled her attention away from the stones.

“I just want to see where the noise is coming from.”

“Fine Craz, but if we don’t find an inn before dark you’re getting firewood and dinner.” Cheetottee chuckled quietly and Arswert waved as he walked away.

“I believe you’re about to be entertaining some guests.” He joked.

“It would seem so.” Cheetottee said happily. A small group of travelers walked into view and her smile widened. “It would seem so.”
