Life Excerpt

There was just one person in front of him in the line now. He could clearly hear that voice that he was so familiar with by now. The woman in front of him walked off and Freddy stepped forward to the counter. The elven man on the other side smiled even bigger when he saw who he was facing.
”Well, if it isn’t my favorite detective! Will it be the usual, detective Parker?” Hearing that beautiful melodious voice addressing him always made Freddy feel elated and like there was a kaleidoscope of butterflies aflutter in his stomach. He was just grateful that he’d never been one to get tongue-tied no matter the situation.
”Yes. The usual for me and my partner.” The barista gave him an, obviously, faked suspicious look.
”Ah, this mysterious partner of yours. How come he’s never the one ordering your coffees, huh?” Freddy chuckled.
”Oh, I’ve tried to encourage him but he keeps insisting that I always be the one to go in here.” Connor gave him an amused look.
”Is he shy or something?” Freddy rubbed his neck as he knew that the moment that his partner had pushed him about was fast approaching.
”No, nothing like that. I...guess he just doesn’t want to rob me of this...pleasure of mine.” The elf giggled slightly. A sound that affected Freddy even more than just normal speech from him.
”It’s a pleasure for you to order coffee?” Right now Freddy was glad that there wasn’t anyone queuing behind him because he realized that this exchange was taking longer than usual. He cleared his throat in an attempt to get rid of some of the nervousness that was building up within him.
”Well, it’s not so much the ordering itself as much as the..um...person taking the order.”
    ”Is that so?”
”Yeah...” Connor leaned in a little over the counter, making his face come closer to Freddy’s.
”Are you trying to tell me something...detective?” That last word had been spoken as a seductive whisper. Freddy swallowed hard before responding.
    ”I was...wondering.”
    ”Yes?”
”Would you...would you go...on a date with me?” He was not a fan of how his voice had changed to a higher pitch as he spoke the word date. But to his surprise the elf didn’t seem to have noticed. He looked genuinely, and pleasantly, surprised by his question.
”I would love to.” Connor placed Freddy’s order on the counter between them. Freddy hadn’t even noticed the elf preparing the order. Then Connor gave him a coy look. “Tell me though. Was this purely your idea, or did your partner encourage you?” Freddy could feel the heat rise on his cheeks, and he looked down at the floor while rubbing his neck again and chuckling.
    ”That obvious, huh?” Connor shrugged.
”You’ve been coming here every weekday for the past...what? Six months?” Freddy nodded. “And this is the first time you’ve done more than order your coffee and given me more than one of your very pleasant smiles. So, yes. It was pretty apparent that something, or someone, managed to change your mind about approaching me about what you’ve wanted for...a while.”

It was the distinctive smell of bacon being cooked that really woke him up. He was feeling more well-rested right now than he’d felt in a very long time. Usually his mind was filled with thoughts of the cases him and his partner were working. Mostly robbery ones. But this night and this morning were different. As he opened his eyes he smiled as he looked at his unfamiliar surroundings. Last night had marked his third date with Connor Matthews, and for the first time he’d agreed to take it further than just a goodnight kiss. He chuckled. His partner, Stanley, would have a field day with this. He sat up and looked around for his underwear. Once he found it he went and put it on before starting to head towards the bathroom. As he was passing by the closet something caught his eye. He’d always been inquisitive by nature, which was extremely helpful in his line of work, so he turned on his heels and headed over to the closet. One of the sliding doors was open and there was some dark clothing in there, slightly sticking out of a duffel bag. Reaching in he grabbed something that looked to be made out of some different material than the rest. As he held it out in front of him he recognized it immediately. How could he not when he’d stared for hours on end at security stills of the burglar that wore this exact mask? It was like the entire world around him fell away. What was going on? Was Connor the guy he’d been chasing for the past year and a half? Could the guy he’d spent the night with be the same one that had been stealing art from pretty much all the wealthy people of this city? As if in a daze he got the rest of his clothes back on and headed out of the bedroom. He could see the elf in the kitchen, happily making breakfast. Completely oblivious to the discovery Freddy had made. As if he could sense a change in the air, or maybe his presence Connor started turning around.
”Good morni...” As he saw the expression on Freddy’s face he stopped talking. Then he noticed the mask in his hands. “Oh...”
”Oh? Is that all you’re gonna say? This is you?” Freddy held up the mask. “You’re the guy that’s been stealing art all this time?”
    ”Freddy, I...”
”Don’t!” Freddy could feel himself losing control and that was the last thing he wanted right now. He squeezed the mask in his hand before throwing it on the floor. Then he stormed out of the apartment.

Stanley winced as he took another gulp of the coffee.
”Okay, that’s it!” He opened the door of the car they were in and poured the rest of the coffee out. He looked at his partner that was being quiet and brooding next to him. “You seriously need to talk to him.” Freddy looked at him with a very bemused expression.
”Right. You want me to kiss and make up with Connor just so you don’t have to endure more bad coffee, is that it?” Stanley shook his head.
”You know that that’s not why I want you to go back to him. The coffee...well the coffee was just the last drop for me. Literally.” He let out a deep, frustrated, sigh. “Look at yourself, Freddy! It’s been three days since you found out and you’ve been more miserable in those three days than you’d been your whole life. Combined!”
”It’s not that simple! You know that!” Stanley sighed again. This time it was more a sigh of defeat, than frustration.
”Look. I get that it’s a moral dilemma for you. On the one hand you now know the identity of the cat burglar we’ve been chasing for the last eighteen months...”
    ”I should be arresting him.”
”On the other hand, you clearly love this guy.” Freddy’s head turned towards him so fast that Stanley was afraid he’d snap his own neck. Stanley shook his head at the shocked look he was getting from his partner. “Friend, you’ve been pining for him for six months before actually daring to ask him out, thanks to me, and now, a month later, you are clearly head over heels for this guy. Just because you’re in denial doesn’t mean that you’re partner’s blind to it too, my friend.” Freddy turned his head to go back to looking out of the windshield.
”I’m not above the law. No one is. My feelings don’t matter in the end...”
”You remember what we discovered the day before your own discovery? What he does with the money after he sells the art?” Freddy gave him a sideways glance.
    ”I do.”
”Yeah, he donates it to charities that help less fortunate people of this city. The dude’s a modern day Robin Hood, if you ask me.”
”I...suppose that’s true. But that doesn’t make it any less wrong. Just because these guys are rich doesn’t mean that you can just steal from them without issue. It’s still against the law!” Stanley sighed.
”I’m well aware of that. But what if you could convince him to stop? He’s never hurt anyone.”
”And you think no one would ask questions? Like our colleagues? You think they wouldn’t find it strange that we would just stop hunting him? After all this time?” Stanley shrugged.
”Say that he left town. Left our jurisdiction. We can’t do anything about it if that happens.” Freddy gave him a slightly confused look.
”Why are you so adamant about finding a solution to this, anyway?” Stanley raised his eyebrows.
”Freddy, I’m not just your partner, I’m your friend! The last month I’ve seen you be happier than ever before. It’s been amazing to see you smile so much, and enjoy your life for once. I don’t want that to stop. I want you to be happy!” Freddy smiled.
    ”Thank you.”
