“No, not ripe yet!” Tayberry huffed as she moved to another row to inspect another branch of raspberries. It was midsummer, and it was time for the kanis to enjoy the fruits of her labor—literally. She smiled as she plucked a plump, juicy raspberry from another branch. Her basket was slowly filling with berries that would soon be transformed into a tart jam or a tasty pie.

Tayberry was a very peculiar kanis who had a peculiar interest. She loved to garden only two types of berries: blackberries and raspberries. Not blueberries. Not strawberries. Only raspberries and blackberries. Why was she so particular? Well, not even Tayberry herself could explain. The appearance and taste of other berries were simply inferior to her. She glared at her minion who was struggling to pick a blackberry off of a branch.

"Sugar, try grabbing the blackberry below you to the right. The one above you is too far out of your reach," Tayberry signed while grabbing the blackberry above her minion's head. Although she was thankful to have someone to assist her with berry picking, Tayberry sometimes failed to realize there is only so much a small strawbunny could do. Nonetheless, a little help was better than no help at all.

"Well, I think these are enough berries for now," Tayberry smiled as she lifted two baskets filled to the brim with blackberries and raspberries. Sugar hopped into the raspberry basket and rested on the bed of berries all the way back home.

It was a simple kind of life that the kanis lived. Day in and and day out she would go to the fields to care for her berries. It was a labor of love that was not always pleasant. She always had to worry about storms or insects ravaging her crops during the summer, Sometimes her desert and jam sales would plummet during difficult economic times. It certainly was not a profession that was going to make her rich, but did it make Tayberry happy?

"Yes! It's perfect!" Tayberry gleefully exclaimed as she pulled her fresh baked blackberry pie out of the oven and placed it on top of the stove. Fragrant steam filled the kitchen with the sweet smell of her desert. The pie was cooked to a perfect golden brown and would soon be enjoyed by a lucky customer. Sugar eagerly hopped over to the pie with a look of longing in his eyes. Tayberry shook her head and clicked her tongue at her minion.

"Now look, Sugar, that's a pie for sale. It's not for us. You know this," she relayed to Sugar. Her minion stared back at her with begging eyes and a pout. He looked so cute and pitiful that Tayberry could not help but to laugh.

"Ok, ok, we can enjoy this pie together," Tayberry sighed with a smile as she grabbed a knife and saucer from the cupboard. She made an incision down the middle of the pie and slid the knife off of the center to form a piece. As she placed the piece on the saucer she could not help but to smile at her work. It truly was a perfect slice. A luscious, deep purple blackberry filling topped with a golden, flaky crust.

Tayberry was certainly happy indeed.
