Screaming fans greeted the announcer's voice as Northern Dancer gracefully trotted from the stables onto the dirt of the racetrack. Familiar in its raucous noise, deafening and mind-numbingly pleasing, he spun on his heels and gave the crowd a magnificent rear. The crowd lost it, the fan favorite greeting them with high knees and beautifully flowing movement. Dancer made his way into the starting gate and stood quietly while track attendants checked everyone over for illegal devices. Newbies in the gates around him shifted uneasily, wasting precious energy piaffing in place and fighting with the attendants.
Some years later, sitting on a cushion and thinking about that fateful race, Dancer would close his eyes and run it again and again, pushing himself harder or keeping more tightly to the inside rail. Even in his head, he didn't win those races, but it was the thought that counts, right?
Even though the race had cost him the Triple Crown, he still managed to win 14 of his 18 races, and never once did he come out worse than third. In the end, Dancer became one of the most influential and sought-after bloodlines in all of racehorse pedigrees, turning out consistent and record-breaking champions such as Black Caviar and Mine That Bird. He broke the Kentucky Derby record and held it until Secretariat, a distant relative, broke it again.
