A cloud of Winter's icy breath curled around her. It might've stung her nose if she could have felt it. But, like the pads of her feet, it had gone numb long ago. She had traveled so far -- her aching limbs could attest to that. In what direction? Winter's fury had erased all of that. No trace of footprints, nor landmarks recognizable on the frozen tundra sprawling before her. An endless icy wasteland. And it was hers.

"Princess, I'm cold," came the feeble voice of her pet. Pepper, the baby cane fiend she'd befriended on her journey, was nestled in the thick fur of Mintsy's neck.

Mintsy didn't answer immediately. The cold slowed her brain, her reactions. Even Anyu fur couldn't keep off this chill. It was the coldest winter Mintsy had ever faced, and the longest she'd traveled in the midst of a blizzard such as this. "I know, little one," she said. Her voice rasped, her lips cracked, and she wished, more than anything, that she was back at the palace.

But she'd left that and her duty behind for her younger brother, Luften. Let her family think she died in the snowstorm. Let her kingdom forget about their traitorous princess, and prosper under Luften's rule. He was smart and understanding. Much more fit to run a kingdom than she.

"We'll get there soon enough."

Mintsy wasn't sure if she was trying to assure Pepper or herself. The maps she'd found in the cellar were old and written in the language of her people -- non-translatable now, as no one in the kingdom spoke it anymore. Still, she'd tried to get a good idea of where she was going before she started on her secret journey.

Clearly, she was terrible at reading maps.

"Are you hungry?" she asked Pepper. "You haven't eaten since dawn."

Pepper's silence told her all she needed to know. "There should be another cookie in my satchel. You should have it."

She didn't say it was the last of the food she'd brought with her. The journey to the small village shouldn't have taken this long. She'd estimated a travel time of three days, but now she was running short on food. Pepper had been an unexpected addition, but when she'd found him alone and abandoned, shivering in the cold, she couldn't very well turn him down. He'd been separated from his family. He'd never find his way alone, so she'd opted to bring him with her.

And, of course, he was and would be the only one to know her secret.

They traveled until night began to fall -- a very short two hours -- and the darkness swept over the snow-covered land. "We'll rest here," Mintsy said, eyeing a large boulder. "It should be large enough to break the wind."

Just as they were settling down in their makeshift boulder-snow barricade, Mintsy's sensitive nose caught a whiff of something she hadn't smelled since leaving the palace. Immediately, her heart picked up and her ears perked forward. "Do you smell that?" Already, she was on her feet, and Pepper clung to her neck ruff to keep from falling off.

"Smell what, Princess?" he cried.

"Smoke! The village must be close." Her warm brown eyes frantically searched the horizon, and sure enough, there was a faint orange glow in the distance. Fire. Life. A new beginning.

"Our journey is over, little one."
