She had always been a ray of sunshine. From the day she was born, her delightful smiles and giggles were infectious. People changed when they met her; even the darkest souls could see the light.
The cardiac monitor beeped slower as the minutes crawled by. The small room was crammed with family and friends trying to choke back their tears. Weak as she was, she managed to lift a hand to rest on her fiancé's face. "It's all right," she promised. Her hand fell. The monitor broke into into a heart-breaking monotone. She died with a smile on her face.
The world grew darker than ever before.
Lux smiled down at the man napping underneath the tree. He was older now, nearly thirty, but his face had remained the same for those long ten years. But he was quieter, more reserved. He didn't smile as much anymore.
The small creature of light pounced from her perch hidden in the leaves, landing lightly on the man's chest. She rested a silky paw on his face; tears welled in his closing eyes, and a faint smile played at his lips. "It's all right," she promised.
