Something grotesque is chasing them.
"They hurt us," the thing snarls, raspy, cracked voice rising into a howl on the last word.
The figure carrying the mirror flinches, stumbling. They tumble into the mud, bringing the mirror down to catch their weight on the corner of the frame. The monster has almost caught up, charging forward with his long, grey body low to the ground. Twisting, the figure spins the mirror in place, facing it to the headless thing.
With a roar of thunder, lightning flashes out from the reflective surface. The monster lets out a hissing shriek, jerking away. The pungent smell of roast flesh permeates the air. The mirror shatters to pieces. Its wielder lets go of the frame, already turning to resume running, stooping to snag the tip of the tail to help carry it.
The monster writhes, clawing at his foreleg. During his distraction, the sword-wielder lunges, swinging their massive sword. The blade strikes true with a meaty thunk, sinking into the monster's side between the ribs and haunch. The monster howls, staggering. The sword is ripped from its owner's grip; the sword-wielder stumbles but does not fall. They cast one longing look at their lost weapon, firmly stuck in flesh, then rush to join the others.
Rawboned and bloody, but not defeated, the monster lets out a bellowing roar, his mouth so wide that the lower flap of his neck smacks into the ground with a meaty thud. "Kill you, kill you, KILL YOU!"
He shakes himself out, splattering blood everywhere. The sword remains lodged. With an aggravated hiss, he swipes at it, knocking it loose. Then he rushes after the fleeing figures, his voice a howling cacophony of rage.
With nothing left to defend themselves with, the trio can do nothing but drop the tail and run. The monster pounces at one, knocking them down. In two quick snaps of his massive jaws, they're dead.
The other two figures scatter, rushing off in different directions. One of them shouts to be heard over the rain, hoping to draw the monster's attention. It works--the monster follows the yelling, snarling and snapping and scrambling and slipping. The chase does not last long. The monster is too big and too fast, despite frequent stumbles in the mud. The second figure dies as quickly as the first.
The monster raises his head with a growl, blood running from his maw. One more. He can no longer hear the sounds of a frantic heart and labored breathing nearby. With all the rain, scents are muddled, washed away almost as soon as they're laid. He could race about in the rain forever and never find his prey.
They'll come back. Whatever they wanted with his tail, it continues to thrash about in the mud, weakening the longer it remains apart from him.
Grinning, the monster stoops to eat his dinner.
