This first date had to be good, special, spectacular even. He’d had eyes for her since they were kids, when he wasn’t sure what these new feelings bubbling up inside him were, but he wanted more. After mustering all the courage he had and finding the perfect moment, she said “yes” with that smile of hers that was all sunshine and took away every care in the world. And he was going to make the most of this chance.

He asked anyone and everyone about their best dates, what had made them the best dates, any dates they wouldn’t care to repeat, any advice they might have to give. It was probably annoying, but it had to be done. This had to be perfect, had to impress her, had to make a second, a third, a tenth, a twenty-eighth date happen. He just couldn’t settle for anybody else, not after he’d met her.

Several people had recommended cooking for her, but he was pretty sure food poisoning wouldn’t make the date her best. If this went well, he could take cooking classes at night, if a home cooked meal would make her happy. He settled for a small, local authentic Italian hole in the wall for dinner, and then he was going to take her back to his place for dessert. She’d always had a sweet tooth. She loved strawberries and chocolate so he’d decided to combine the two into something more romantic than buying her the overpriced premade chocolate-covered berries he saw on a commercial channel surfing in the wee hours. He bought a fondue pot and even read the manual that came with it so he wouldn’t make any mistakes. Fondue he could do.

When the date finally came, he was pretty sure it was going amazingly. Despite his nervousness, he knew he was being charming. She seemed enthused with the conversation, and they lingered after he paid, long after the plates were taken away. When he knew the wait staff was getting annoyed with them taking up a table that could be used by new paying customers, he walked her outside.

“I’ve had a great time, but I don’t really want the night to be over yet. Would you like to come back to my place for fondue?” he asked, trying not to sound too hopeful.

She seemed a bit taken aback. “I’ve had a great time, too, and definitely want to see you again, but I don’t usually, uh, fondue after the first date.”

After a moment of confusion, he realized she had completely misunderstood and chuckled. “I don’t either, not what you’re thinking. I like to take things slow. The fondue I had in mind is just strawberries and chocolate. You dip them into a melting pot.”

“Oh! That sounds really good. You remembered strawberries are my favorite! In that case, lead the way." She seemed genuinely pleased that he'd remembered, like he could forget. That sunshine smile was back in full force, shining brightly up to her baby blues. She was radiant.

He offered his arm, which she took without hesitance, slotting herself close against his side like she belonged there. They walked slowly to the parking lot, enjoying the warm dusk air. He wondered if he’d ever get down from cloud nine.
