As the fog rolled in over the cobblestone streets, the sun turned dim and began to sink behind the horizon, silhouetting the skyline of towering buildings and infrastructure that was continually pumping out fumes. The oil lamps were lit to illuminate the way, to allow carriages to pass by and the last of the day's deliveries to be made to the front step of the stores that lined the street.

At a nearby refuge center, Edra and many other steamwork pets like himself were camping there until they found a home that would take them in. Edra was one of the fortunate steamwork creations made by the chaotic neutral Dr. Steven Krazkov to be taken to safety after the Steamwork Suffrage movement of 1846. Many steamwork beings were being used in industrial work, the kind of work no one else would take, even in the depths of the Subetan recession.

Edra was a very sentimental being, who loved music and singing. He often spoke of the bells he heard ringing. The clock tower chimes were the first sounds he remembered hearing after awakening in Dr. Krazkov's laboratory.

Edra was Dr. Krazkov's finest creations, with a more capable processing unit and a lower energy radius that allowed Edra to run even on very little energy. When the news began to leak of the horrible treatment the steamwork animals were suffering through, Dr. Krazkov was imprisoned and a law was passed that made it illegal to hire steamworkers in factories, under the pretense that they were equally intelligent and conscious as other beings. Although this was a breakthrough for steamwork rights, it put the economy at a standstill, and halted many factories in the production of common goods.

People began to leave the city, looking for new places that had more potential. The city was becoming a rusted slab, unable to support any kind of life. Many people had no idea how to live without industry, and a wave of hopelessness resonated throughout the area. Terrified that the decision to outlaw steamwork labor would cause more harm than good in the long run, officials began contemplating the release of Dr. Krazkov and a repeal of the Steamwork Suffrage law. It would have been the end to the steamwork's freedom, had it not been for a figure who arose from the ashes of the oil industry with a revolutionary idea in mind. This person was Ms. Christen Seaver, a self taught steamwork engineer who wished to utilize steam power in the same way that oil had been used for so many decades.

With a little persuasion, she was granted funding to begin a project to reform the industry and start research on furthering the use of steam power. In order to improve the most upon current methods, she wanted the latest model of steamwork pet that Dr. Krazkov had built, which was Edra. With no other place to live, Edra agreed to be a test subject for Ms. Seaver if it gave a ray of hope to the dismal looking future of their beloved city.

To Edra's surprise, he soon found out how much of a genius Ms. Seaver was, and how powerful her motivation was to bring her vision to life. They quickly became friends, and Edra shared his dream of being able to hear the bells ring clearly once again, and being able to listen to melodious and carefree music. She supported his vision and he supported hers. What Ms. Seaver considered "research" and "testing" was actually very gentle observation and calculations. Thus, Edra organized hundreds of other steamwork pets and encouraged other types of scientists to join the effort. Dozens of people found out and decided to help, from medical doctors to environmentalists.

Soon, steam powered everything started popping up. From engines, to flying machines, ground transportation vehicles, even large scale production. People began moving back to the city when the news of the reform had begun to spread. Life was beginning to pump through the nooks and crannies of the city once again. Over the course of several years, the city was almost completely transformed. Working conditions were made safer for factories and unions were widely available for all types of industry work. Trees, flowers, and shrubs were planted on a mass scale to improve the air quality.

With the next generation of architects and engineers paving the way for a sustainable economy, Ms. Seaver settled down with her partner Silvia and was able to retire, knowing the good she had done for her city. She gave Edra an envelope when she left, and told him to find the yellow building with a pad locked side door. She knew that was were he would be happiest.

In the letter contained a single golden key, with a note that read "12:00". When Edra found the yellow building, he used the key to open the lock. The inside lead straight up a stairway, where a sunlit attic revealed a beautiful sight: an ornate clock whose face alone was several times Edra's height. There was a balcony attached to the attic that over looked the stage to the theater, where opera and musicals were enjoyed weekly. Edra felt that he had finally found a wonderful knew home, and even in his ever changing world, a sense of belonging and connectedness.
