The Teahouse

You slowly step into the teahouse through a vibrantly colored door, a sudden reprise from the biting cold outside as you are met with the sights of another world; another time. You step through an even smaller second door, entering into a tiny space so packed with colors and motion you cannot take it all in at once and resort to standing in bewilderment as if you are in a dream. Before you can seat yourself in one of the booths, filled with pillows and tucked away in secrecy and comfort behind beaded curtains and exotic lamps, the scents of another world intoxicate you. Sweet aromas intertwine with musky and rich incense giving you visions of bustling markets and ancient teahouses even though youâ€™ve never been to any such place. The sharp sound of clinking porcelain and small brass bells cuts into your dreamlike visions like firecrackers through the night; the sounds are gentle and guide you to one of the colorful booths in the corner and you sit on small pillows feeling protected and warm. The memory of the icy tundra outside seems like a mere pipe dream, blown away in the smoke from the incense before you.

The lighting is dim and yellow like that of warm morning rays, unobtrusive and wrapping you in sensory opulence, pulling you deeper and deeper into the colors and scents. Candles spread dancing saffron spirits across the golden and turquoise walls. You become aware of faint music, it is quiet but foreign and it brings you back to more places you have never been; mist-ridden temples and enchanting minstrels. Another bell chimes.

Finally a steaming pot of tea is placed in front of you, the ceramic patterns matching those on the cups that are filled to the brim before you, as if in an illusion. The aroma of the Eastern loose-leaf brew fills you with enchantment; you suddenly feel very calm. An incredible balance is reached within you before the potion even reaches your lips- all thoughts of life outside this den leave you and you are one with the lights and smells and colors, you are part of the vibrantly exotic hideout hidden in the wintery village, you have achieved Nirvana.

The hot liquid warms you from the inside out and you are transported to the mystic lands from whence these flavors came. One cup leads to another as you still take in the surroundings; prayer flags and statues hidden amongst tapestries and plant vines. A bell chimes. You do not notice the hours pass.
