The sound of applause echoed through the great hall as the assembly praised their king. Abstract smiled sheepishly, his black tail twitching nervously. He could feel the sweat drip down his neck. He moved his hand to take a sip from the ceremonial skull, which seemed to be use as a goblet. Abstract felt it stat to slip from his grasp. A splash of the dark liquid splashed onto the floor before he tightened his grip on it. No one mentioned it, they were used to it. After his short drink, they gathered and began to eat. In the silence, Abstract had time to grumble soundlessly to himself about the events that had lead him here.
Three weeks ago he had been in conference with the commander of the Nablona forces, their great king. They had been in a heated argument. Abstract gestured emphatically, his hands flapping about like a wounded bird and his tail snapping against the floor with each point he made. Peace, he said, peace would be best for both races, the Nablonians and Valto. The war had already claimed so many lives. In his rush to make himself understood, Abstract had knocked over the king’s prized glass vase, one of the spoils from his first battle.
The king, already mad at the interruption in his day, was now furious. His hands, the fingers large and connected by rough webbing, made quick sure movements. Absolutely not, I’ll not let them win. A messenger came in then, bringing news of their latest battle; they’d lost. This is the third loss in a row, the king’s forehead crinkled into deep lines. Abstract again pleaded with him, pointing out that they seemed to be destined for loss no matter what. The king dismissed him, turning to the window where fires burned in the distance.
Abstract returned to the ongoing battle, dismayed at the blood spattered everywhere. He saw two warrior fighting and immediately tried to step in. Stop the fighting, he begged, his eyes wide and hands spread out to either of them. The Nablonian and Valtonian stared at him. Abstract rushed to set them apart, right before the Nablonian's soldier could give his enemy the eternal sleep. Abstract looked at his fellow comrade, giving his back to the Nablonian's soldier. Great job Captain Ab, the Valtonian soldier cheered with a tightly closed fist, it’s too bad you can’t use that trick on all of those worthless dogs. The soldier clapped him on the back and ran to help another. Abstract felt a warm wet feeling on his tail. Without noticing, the opposing soldier stabbed himself with Abstract's tail while trying to continue with the fate he set, only one alive.
Several weeks later the king summoned Abstract to his chamber. The war had become increasingly bad for the Nablonians. He was ready to talk of peace with the Valtonians. He commanded Abstract to take command while he met with the King of Valto. Abstract watched the proceedings in the room he sneaked, where he could see the conference occurring. Every single Valtonian had shown up for the peace accords, as well as the Nablonian king’s most trusted advisors. Abstract leaned forward in his excitement into a strange Nablonian machine. His slippery sweaty hand slipped on a button and an explosion went off. A score of missiles had been launched straight at the peace conference.Later, Abstract had the sad job of telling his people what had happened. To his surprise, they cheered. Few of them had wanted any sort of peace with their mortal enemies. Instead they had hoped for complete annihilation. They carried him to the king’s chambers, now his, and decked him out in royal attire.
